Book excerpt: In the humorous novel DOMs Need Love Too!, a Yale psychology professor encounters a small group of healthy, vigorous, flag-loving seniors at a racquetball and health club and secretly decides to create a case study out of the merry makers, better known as the Day Old Muffins. Middle-aged Eve is obligated to submit an academic paper titled Men Without Partners to the University at the conclusion of the school year. When she witnesses the senior comrades hitting on a young, pretty maiden with an array of grandiose promises, she is both dismayed and intrigued by their sophomoric behavior. As Eve infiltrates the voyeuristic group to study their chauvinistic attitudes, she wonders if there is such a thing as male menopause-a condition that causes men to overcompensate a diminished libido. Eve is surprised to find the men boast an intellectual depth beyond her expectations and as two Day Old Muffins vie for her attention, jealously, extortion, and love encircle the group, complicating matters even further. As Eve seeks to uncover the nature of the force which brings the six men together so faithfully, her analytical harness is unleashed, revealing her true womanhood.

Download or read book Up All Day written by Rebecca Weller and published by Mod By Dom Pty Ltd. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the bestselling sobriety memoir, A Happier Hour, comes a memoir about the beauty and power of creativity… What does it take to live without alcohol long-term? Ask anyone who’s long-term sober and they’ll likely tell you that having some sort of goal, dream, purpose, or passion in life has been pivotal to their success. Rebecca Weller was no different. She once talked about a lot of things she ‘intended to do’, when she was drinking. Big, bold plans written on the backs of napkins, shared with friends over their tenth round, and drunkenly scrawled into her journal late at night. Plans that magically evaporated like stardust in the morning light. On the verge of celebrating two years of sobriety, and as determined as ever to ‘reach her full potential’, she thinks she’s got it all figured out. But when she’s offered a place in a book course and a chance at becoming a Real Writer, will she dare to confront her secret lifelong dream? She’s about to discover that her hard-won sober status will only take her so far. What comes next is up to her. Up All Day is an uplifting true story about overcoming our limiting beliefs and embracing our dreams – especially when they appear in a form we didn’t expect. It’s about being brave, and doing hard things (even if you might fail), because of how they change you.

Book Synopsis Opera in the Tropics by : Rogério Budasz
Download or read book Opera in the Tropics written by Rogério Budasz and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opera in the Tropics is an engaging exploration of theater with music in Brazil from the mid 1500s to the early 1820s. Author Rogério Budasz delves into the practices of the actors, singers, poets, and composers who created and performed Jesuit moral plays, Spanish comedias, and Portuguese vernacular operas and entremezes during the colonial period, as well as the Italian operas that celebrated the new independent nation in 1822. A Brazilian producer claimed in 1825 that the goal of music-theater was to instruct, entertain, and distract the population. Budasz argues that this threefold goal had in fact been present throughout the colonial period, in different combinations and with different purposes, at the hands of missionaries, intellectuals, bureaucrats, political leaders, and cultural producers. While Budasz demonstrates a continuity from Portuguese theatrical practices, primarily through the circulation of artists and repertory, he also examines a number of localized departures from the metropolitan model, particularly in the ethnic and gender profile of theatrical workers, in the modifications determined by local tastes, priorities, and materials, and in the political use of theater as an ideological and civilizing tool within the paradoxical context of a slave society. An eye-opening narrative of the transformations and uses of a colonial art form, Opera in the Tropics will be essential reading for all interested in the music and theater in Iberian and Latin American culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holidays are a key to helping us understand the transformation of national, regional, community and ethnic identities. In Celebrating Canada, Matthew Hayday and Raymond Blake situate Canada in an international context as they examine the history and evolution of our national and provincial holidays and annual celebrations. The contributors to this volume examine such holidays as Dominion Day, Victoria Day, Quebec’s Fête Nationale and Canadian Thanksgiving, among many others. They also examine how Canadians celebrate the national days of other countries (like the Fourth of July) and how Dominion Day was observed in the United Kingdom. Drawing heavily on primary source research, and theories of nationalism, identities and invented traditions, the essays in this collection deepen our understanding of how these holidays have influenced the evolution of Canadian identities.
