Book excerpt: Giorgio Bassani is an Italian-Jewish writer from Ferrara, famous largely for 'The Garden of the Finzi-Contini', 'The Golden-Rimmed Eye Glasses' and other novels, brought together in 'Il Romanzo di Ferrara' (1980). In this monumental work, Bassani describes the life of the Italian Jews under Fascism. Bassani may be seen as not just a fictional writer, but as a witness of persecution of Jews under Fascism; his 'Romance' is not so much a novel but a multifaceted document on Jewish life in the peninsular. This volume takes into account a close reading of Bassani, literary theories on witnessing the Shoa, and the historical debate on Italian discriminatory politics. The book is thus both literary criticism and an analysis of anti- Semitism and Jewish assimilation in Italy.

Book excerpt: The construction of buildings is learnt through experience and the inheritance of a tradition in forming buildings over several thousand years. Successful construction learns from this experience which becomes embodied in principles of application. Though materials and techniques change, various elements have to perform the same function. 'Principles of Element Design' identifies all the relevant elements and then breaks these elements down into all their basic constituents, making it possible for students to fully understand the given theory and principles behind each part. As all building projects are subject to guidance through the Building Regulations and British Standards, this book gives an immediate reference back to relevant information to help practitioners and contractors identify key documents needed. Yvonne Dean B.A. (Hons) B.A (Open) RIBA, an architect, energy consultant and materials technologist. She also has 15 years experience as a lecturer, travels widely and is a guest lecturer at many universities. She pioneered an access course for Women into Architecture and Building, which has been used as a template by others, and has been instrumental in helping to change the teaching of technology for architects and designers. Peter Rich AA Dipl. (Hons) Architect, started his career with 14 years experience as a qualified architectural technician. He then joined the AA School of Architecture, working with Bill Allen and John Bickerdike after his graduation, later becoming a partner of Bickerdike Allen Rich and Partners. He also taught building construction at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and architectural design at the Polytechnic of North London. He now acts as a Consultant.

Book excerpt: Medici Gardens challenges the common assumption that such gardens as Trebbio, Cafaggiolo, Careggi, and Fiesole were the products of an established design practice whereby one client commissioned one architect or artist. The book suggests that in the case of the gardens in Florence garden making preceded its theoretical articulation.

Book excerpt: Soil nailing is an in situ soil reinforcement technique that can be used to enhance the stability of slopes, retaining walls, embankments, and excavations. It involves installation of closely spaced, relatively slender unstressed tension-carrying structural elements into the ground to stabilize the soil mass. These elements, which are called soil nails, comprise steel or other engineering materials such as fiber reinforced polymer. Soil nailing did not gain popularity until the 1970s when engineers started to realize that the technique could offer an effective, robust, and economical reinforcing system for a variety of ground conditions. More importantly, the track record has been excellent in that no major collapses have been reported in properly designed and well-constructed soil nailed structures so far. Considerable experience and knowledge of the technique have been gained in the past few decades through systematic technical development work comprising laboratory tests, numerical modeling, physical modeling, site trials and field monitoring covering design, and construction practices. Soil Nailing: A Practical Guide consolidates the experience and advances made in the development and use of the soil nailing technique and encourages a wider adoption of the technique by practitioners. The book is intended for use by postgraduate students, researchers, and practicing civil and geotechnical engineers, who wish to have a more in-depth and fundamental understanding of the theory and practice behind the technique. It presents the basic principles of the technique as well as state-of-the-art knowledge and recommended standard of good practice in respect of design, construction, monitoring, and maintenance of soil nailed structures.

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of the latest research findings in such areas as networked multi-agent systems, co-design of communication and control, distributed control strategies that can cope with asynchrony between local loops, event-triggered control, modelling of network infrastructure, novel concepts of distributed control for networked and cyber-physical systems. The book contains the result of the latest research in the field of communication and control system design to support networked control systems with stringent real-time requirements. It introduces readers to research in the field of joint design of the control and communication protocol and presents the latest developments in the area of novel optimal control and scheduling designs under resource constraints. The book also covers the issues of creating emerging information and communication technologies for traffic estimation and control, connected and autonomous technology applications and modelling for commercial and shared vehicle operations. The reader will find information on emerging cyber-physical systems, networked multi-agent systems, large-scale distributed energy systems, as well as on real-time systems, safety and security systems. A significant block of studies is devoted to the topic of transitions towards electrification and automation of vehicles. Modern concepts of road infrastructure construction are described in detail in the presented research papers. Automotive industry professionals will be particularly interested in the sections on the novel mechanisms for medium access in multi-hop wireless networks with real-time requirements, optimal layering architecture and co-design for wireless communication. The book will be incredibly interesting for researchers interested in human–digital interfaces, industrial Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
