Book excerpt: During the Nineteenth Century, the church in the United States wrestled with how to respond to that era's major social, political, and ethical issues-slavery and the Civil War and its aftermath. Should the church's role be only to evangelize society, or should she also speak prophetically? Strange brilliantly shows how Charles Hodge defended a view of the spirituality of the church that permitted it to maintain a witness to its culture while not being overwhelmed by the politics of the day. Hodge's nuanced understanding of the church's spirituality is as profoundly fresh and relevant now as it was then. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Most scholars of Reformed orthodoxy devote little attention to the nineteenth century, and most students of nineteenth century Reformed thought bypass the influence of Reformed orthodox ideas on their subjects. Aligning himself with Reformed theology in nineteenth century America, Charles Hodge's writings are an ideal place to bring such studies together. Hodge's American context and Reformed identity illustrate the persistence and change of Reformed ideas in a post-Enlightenment context. Encompassing philosophy, science, and theology, Ryan M. McGraw traces the development of Hodge's ideas with an eye both to Reformed orthodoxy and to American thought.

Book excerpt: Rediscovering the Spirituality of the Church in Our Highly Politicized Age The goal of the church should be simple—share the gospel to the ends of the earth. But in our highly politicized age, Christians can tend to place earthly political and social agendas over God's spiritual mission of the church. In Empowered Witness, author Alan D. Strange examines the doctrine of the spirituality of the church, making a clear distinction between the functions of the church and other institutions. Strange argues that if the church continues to push political agendas, no institution will be focused solely on the Great Commission and the gospel will be lost entirely. This book calls readers to become aware of the church's power and limits and shed light on moral issues in a way that doesn't alter the deeply spiritual and gospel-centered mission of the church. Explores the Spirituality of the Church: An important biblical doctrine developed in the 19th century Appeals to Thoughtful Laypeople and Church Leaders: Considers the critical distinctions between the church and other institutions Historical: Examines the purpose of the church throughout history and the development of the spirituality of the church in the 19th century Foreword by Kevin DeYoung: Author of Just Do Something; Crazy Busy; and The Biggest Story

Strange investigates the Westminster Assembly and the Westminster Standards to determine whether they affirmed the imputation of Christ’s active obedience as necessary for our justification. He also gives a survey of church history before and during the Reformation to see how the Assembly relates to the tradition before it. This study also reflects on the relation of imputation to federal theology, modern challenges to the doctrine, and important rules for interpreting the confessional document. Table of Contents: 1. An Initial Approach to the Westminster Assembly’s Understanding of Christ’s Active Obedience 2. Antecedents to Active Obedience in the Ancient and Medieval Church 3. Book excerpt: Princeton theologian Charles Hodge is the emblematic American Presbyterian. Hodge’s spirituality, however, is not only misunderstood, it is largely ignored as the best example of Presbyterian piety and spirituality. Some traditions term this area of theology “spiritual formation” or “the Christian life.” Hodge called it “Holy Living” in his book The Way of Life. Hodge says that the essence of sanctification is “a participation of the Divine nature, or the conformity of the soul to God.” His theology of sanctification and the Christian life is directly linked to John Calvin and the Westminster Standards and therefore can provide a corrective influence on current Presbyterian misunderstandings of sanctification in the church today. Hodge’s articulation of sanctification as “a participation of the Divine nature, or the conformity of the soul to God” is the purest form of Presbyterian sanctification theology because it is the most immediate and direct line to Westminster and Calvin.

Further, though it is standard fare to assume that Kline was the architect of the project, in reality, there has been very little scholarly examination of this point. In response, Kline’s system is analyzed through the means of a dialectical discourse with three differing models within the Reformed tradition—the Theonomist, Perspectivalist, and Dooyeweerdian schools. Through this means, the study keeps away from surface-level polemics and instead directs readers to the critically important substructural level of current discussions. While clarifying some of the key differences between Kline and his interlocutors, often-overlooked points of nuance are also highlighted. These points are shown to be important in that they present the potential to lessen frustration and impasse in the ongoing dialogue.

Book excerpt: What this book argues for in today’s twenty-first-century church was a hallmark doctrine of old school Presbyterianism of the nineteenth century: the doctrine of the spirituality of the church. Which eschatological approach one uses will affect one’s understanding of the nature and practice of missions. Mission creep—the expansion of the church’s original objective(s)—is a real concern for the contemporary church, and how one understands eschatology affects one’s focus on missions. The mission of the church is narrow (Matt 28:18–20), and the calling of individual believers is broad (Rom 12:1–2). If we fail to make this crucial distinction, the church’s mission will lose its biblical emphasis. And if the church’s mission is lost, then the authority structure, instantiated in the offices and officers of the church, devolves into illegitimacy, because the church is no longer advancing the kingdom ends she was mandated to do by King Jesus. If the institutional church fails to do this, we will be relinquishing and abdicating and abandoning our most singular and particular and peculiar kingdom of God vocation: the harvesting, gathering, and perfecting of the saints.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The far-reaching social and intellectual changes in the United States since the Civil War have had a definite effect upon the religious thought of American churches. In this volume, a distinguished scholar and theologian has undertaken an inductive study of theological issues in one of the major denominations, the Presbyterian church in the United States of America. Since this church was in the thick of the social and intellectual ferment that changed the living and thinking habits of Americans, much that transpired in it finds broad parallels in other leading American churches. Thus, the story of the Presbyterian church is, in essence, a kind of theological barometer of American history. Avoiding sweeping generalizations, Lefferts A. Loetscher briefly traces the history of the Presbyterian church from its founding by New England Puritans on Long Island in the 1640s to the disruption of 1837 and the "wedding day" of Old School and New School Presbyterians in 1870, following the reunion of 1869. From this point, he examines in detail the development of the church, analyzing the controversies that occurred over the years, interpreting the various theological issues that led to disputes.
