Book Synopsis Thomas Cranmer's Doctrine of Repentance by : Ashley Null
Download or read book Thomas Cranmer's Doctrine of Repentance written by Ashley Null and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-04-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-serving lacky, self-deceiving puppet, Swiss Protestant partisan, or sensible Erasmian humanist: which, if any, was Thomas Cranmer? For centuries historians have offered often bitterly contradictory answers. Although Cranmer was a key participant in the changes to English life brought about by the Reformation, his reticent nature and lack of extensive personal writings have left a vacuum that in the past has too often been filled by scholarly prejudice or presumption. For the first time, however, this book examines in-depth little used manuscript sources to reconstruct Cranmer's theological development on the crucial Protestant doctrine of justification. The author explores Cranmer's cultural heritage, why he would have been attracted to Luther's thought, and then provides convincing evidence for the Reformed Protestant Augustinianism which Cranmer enshrined in the formularies of the Church of England. For Cranmer the glory of God was his love for the unworthy; the heart of theology was proclaiming this truth through word and sacrament. Hence, the focus of both was on the life of on-going repentance, remembering God's gracious love inspired grateful human love.

Book Synopsis Experiences of Charity, 1250-1650 by : Anne M. Scott
Download or read book Experiences of Charity, 1250-1650 written by Anne M. Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a number of years scholars who are concerned with issues of poverty and the poor have turned away from the study of charity and poor relief, in order to search for a view of the life of the poor from the point of view of the poor themselves. Great studies have been conducted using a variety of records, resulting in seminal works that have enriched our understanding of pauper experiences and the influence and impact of poverty on societies. If we return our gaze to ’charity’ with the benefit of those studies' questions, approaches, sources and findings, what might we see differently about how charity was experienced as a concept and in practice, at both community and personal levels? In this collection, contributors explore the experience of charity towards the poor, considering it in spiritual, intellectual, emotional, personal, social, cultural and material terms. The approach is a comparative one: across different time periods, nations, and faiths. Contributors pay particular attention to the way faith inflected charity in the different national environments of England and France, as Catholicism and Calvinism became outlawed and/or minority faith positions in these respective nations. They ask how different faith and beliefs defined or shaped the act of charity, and explore whether these changed over time even within one faith. The sources used to answer such questions go beyond the textual as contributors analyse a range of additional sources that include the visual, aural, and material.
Book Synopsis Medicine and the Seven Deadly Sins in Late Medieval Literature and Culture by : Virginia Langum
Download or read book Medicine and the Seven Deadly Sins in Late Medieval Literature and Culture written by Virginia Langum and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers how scientists, theologians, priests, and poets approached the relationship of the human body and ethics in the later Middle Ages. Is medicine merely a metaphor for sin? Or can certain kinds of bodies physiologically dispose people to be angry, sad, or greedy? If so, then is it their fault? Virginia Langum offers an account of the medical imagery used to describe feelings and actions in religious and literary contexts, referencing a variety of behavioral discussions within medical contexts. The study draws upon medical and theological writing for its philosophical basis, and upon more popular works of religion, as well as poetry, to show how these themes were articulated, explored, and questioned more widely in medieval culture.

Download or read book Déclaration Des Hystoires written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1990 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses principally the iconography and text of a mid 15th century copy of the mystical treatise "Horloge de Sapience" in the most sumptuously illuminated ms. known of the text. Each of the 36 illuminations is discussed in turn, with reference to their pictorial traditions, to the French textual matter and to a unique contemporary commentary, called the "Declaration des hystoires," The "Declaration" is one of the earliest essays in the history of art criticism to survive. The study is rendered useful for teachers and scholars by an English translation of the text of the "Declaration," which enables the reader to see the illustrations through the eyes of a 15th century critic.
