Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The obvious riddles and difficulties in Exod 3:13–15 and Exod 6:2–8 have attracted an overwhelming amount of attention and comment. These texts make important theological statements about the divine name YHWH and the contours of the divine character. From the enigmatic statements in Exod 3:13–15, most scholars reconstruct the original form of the name as “Yahweh,” which is thought to describe YHWH’s creative power or self-existence. Similarly, Exod 6:3 has become a classic proof-text for the Documentary Hypothesis and an indication of different aspects of God’s character as shown in history. Despite their seeming importance for “defining” the divine name, these texts are ancillary to and preparatory for the true revelation of the divine name in the book of Exodus. This book attempts to move beyond atomistic readings of individual texts and etymological studies of the divine name toward a holistic reading of the book of Exodus. Surls centers his argument around in-depth analyses of Exod 3:13–15, 6:2–8 and Exod 33:12–23 and 34:5–8. Consequently, the definitive proclamation of YHWH’s character is not given at the burning bush but in response to Moses’ later intercession (Exod 33:12–23). YHWH proclaimed his name in a formulaic manner that Israel could appropriate (Exod 34:6–7), and the Hebrew Bible quotes or alludes to this text in many genres. This demonstrates the centrality of Exod 34:6–7 to Old Testament Theology. The character of God cannot be discerned from an etymological analysis of the word yhwh but from a close study of YHWH’s deliberate ascriptions made progressively in the book of Exodus.

Book excerpt: Alphonse-Joseph-Auguste Gratry (1805-1872) was born in Lille, northern France, of irreligious parents and lived during a time of endless revolution. As a young man, he underwent a powerful conversion in which he experienced a mystical vision of a world based on truth and justice. This determined the course of his future life. A classically educated scholar, he studied engineering at the outstanding ?cole Polytechnique, completed a doctorate on the scientific method in Strasbourg (1840), was ordained a priest, and later obtained a doctorate in letters and a licentiate in theology. Moved by the events of 1848, he published his first book in the form of a social catechism on the necessity for a systematic response to the needs of society. In a parallel initiative to that of Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman in England, he relaunched the Congregation of the Oratory in Paris (1852) with Pierre Petetot to raise intellectual standards among the clergy after the Revolution. A charismatic individual, well known as a distinguished logician, theologian, social thinker, and outstanding educator, preacher, and spiritual director, his major philosophical works appeared in the 1850s. The French Academy recognized his genius with election to the chair held by Voltaire a century earlier. Gratry fell into disfavor for his adhesion to the International Peace League on the eve of France's war with Germany, and for his stand in regard to papal infallibility before Vatican I (a position largely vindicated in Vatican II), but he accepted the much narrower declaration once it was made. His most famous work, Les Sources, widely published until World War II, offers a plan of studies and a plan of life which reflect Gratry's philosophy of the person. The Christian Democratic Parties, the French lay movement Le Sillon, the Young Christian Workers (YCW), and the writings of Peter Maurin, mentor to today's Catholic Worker movement, witness to his foundational and comprehensive influence. For the first time in English, we have Julian Marias's (1914-2005) clear and accessible study (5th ed.) on the core of Alphonse Gratry's philosophy. Although he lived more than a century ago (1805-1872), Gratry addresses issues of concern today: the ontology of the human person with its body/soul unity; the intrinsic relationship of individuals to society and nature; and the problem of God. Recognized as a master in his lifetime with the rapid reprinting of his Logic, The Knowledge of God, and The Knowledge of the Soul, Gratry was relegated to near oblivion less than seventy years later with the rejection of metaphysics and the rise of Positivism. Marias reclaims Gratry's place in the history of philosophy and thoroughly explains Gratry's original logic "written from the point of view of the juncture of philosophy and the human spirit." He shows how Gratry's theory of induction, in Plato's original and foundational sense (Rep. VI), forms the heart of his metaphysics of knowledge-the science of transcendence by which the mind intellectually apprehends all reality: corporeal, psychic, and divine. Gratry thus establishes a complete ontology of the human person-rational, free, and endowed with a three-fold sense: external, intimate (sens intime), and divine-dependent on unlimited being or God. Gratry's original logic and metaphysics stands on its own philosophical basis, but in Chapter 6, "Five Interior Adventures," Marias includes a parallel, existential foundation drawn from Gratry's private journal. This reveals how the young atheist underwent a series of near mystical experiences which gave him an inescapable awareness of God and confronted him with the moral choice for or against this reality. In this extraordinarily lucid study, we now have access to the complete thought of Gratry, giving scholar and student, as Marias observes, a seemingly providential body of work needed in our time.

Book excerpt: One of the major works of the great German theologian Emil Brunner, The Divine Imperative deals with what we ought to do. People are unconvinced that there is an inviolable moral obligation governing human life because they do not believe that the 'good'can be precisely and clearly known. Haven't some generations called bad what others have called good? Aren't moral standards relative? Doesn't religion lack uniform and practical moral guidance? Brunner discusses the moral confusion we face. He analyses the nature of the Good, showing why the Christian faith as understood by the Protestant Reformers provides the only true approach and answer to the ethical problem. Philosophical ethics, whether ancient or modern, cannot correctly define the Good, becausethe Good is regarded either as too abstract and absolute or as too concrete and relative. Christianity, by contrast, sees the moral problem as one of responsibility between humans who are created so as to respond to God. He created men for responsive fellowship with Him, establishing orderly ways of acting in the world. Correct understanding of the nature of society, family, state, economic life, is needed to discern one's duty. Because Brunner's analysis is at once fundamental and comprehensive, this book remains a fresh and compelling treatment of the moral problem. It offers a provocative discussion and solution of a perennial human problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Webb offers a carefully and creatively wrought phenomenology of sound, showing its relation to the proclamation of God's Word. His keen insights on the primordial nature of sound, speech, and hearing will force theologians to examine, once again, what it means to be a 'hearer of the Word.' Webb masterfully displays the intrinsic relationship between dynamic listening and speech--how intent hearing and confident proclamation are intimately conjoined. He has the rare gift of combining acute theological insight with a mellifluous, readable style. The nature of God's own Word here becomes clearer: vibrant and tensile, life-giving in tone and texture. Whether examining Jesus as the voice of the Father, the role of voice in innertrinitarian relations, or the relationship between voice and gender, Webb offers the kind of thought-provoking and highly creative reflections rarely found elsewhere. He has a creative and incisive theological mind." --Thomas Guarino, Seton Hall University "Being appreciative of Webb's earlier work on hyperbolic language in theology and preaching, I welcomed The Divine Voice. How risky to toss a spoken word into a room of silent readers and expect it to be heard! I was reprimanded, instructed, and moved by the sound of this book. Were I still in the seminary classroom, The Divine Voice would be required reading before one word was said about how to preach." --Fred B. Craddock, The Craddock Center "The Divine Voice is a book of academic theology worthy of the Psalmist who sang 'Day after day the word goes forth, night after night the story is told. Soundless the speech, voiceless the talk, yet the story is echoed throughout the world' (Ps 19:2-3). Stephen Webb is an 'acoustemological' theologian, for whom speech can be prayerful as silence, and silence as instructive as proclamation. When the sounds heard by faith reach Webb's ever-insightful and creative mind, only synthesia could result, and the result is a gift for us all." --Peter Ochs, University of Virginia

Book excerpt: This is the edition including all three books. The so-called Hermetic writings have been known to Christian writers for many centuries. The early church Fathers (Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria) quote them in defense of Christianity. Stobaeus collected fragments of them. The Humanists knew and valued them. They were studied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in modern times have again been diligently examined by many scholars. G. R. S. Mead has issued a translation of the whole body of extant literature, with extended prolegomena, commentary, etc. There is a wide difference of opinion as to the date at which this literature was produced. Mead believes that some of the extant portions of it are at least as early as the earliest Christian writings, while von Christ assigns them to the third Christian century, and thinks that they show the influence of neo-Platonism. To affirm that they influenced New Testament usage would be hazardous, but they perhaps throw some light on the direction in which thought was moving in New Testament times.
