Davis argue that God's interaction with our world is a possibility affirmed equally by the Bible and the contemporary scientific record. Rather than confirming that the cosmos is closed to the actions of the divine, advancing scientific knowledge seems to indicate that the nature of the universe is actually open to the unique type of divine activity portrayed in the Bible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological education has always been vital to the Church’s life and mission; yet today it is in crisis, lacking focus, direction, but also resources and even students. In the early Church, there is no doubt that to lead worship one had to be able to read and interpret the Bible. In order to lead, it was necessary to know at least something about the history of Israel and the work of God in the Gospels, and interpret that history, making it relevant to daily living. Quickly the Church developed schools for its teachers, whether lay or clergy. A catechetical system was organized through which candidates prepared for baptism were given a basic form of theological education. Hence to be a Christian meant persons knew what and why they believed. But over the years, theological education has come to mean education for clergy and church professionals. It has drifted, seeking new moorings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered about life after death? Have you likewise wondered how good do you have to be to have God punch your ticket to heaven? Also, to have St. Peter say to you at the pearly gate, Youre good to go! How Good Is Good Enough for God? will address this mystical subject, but it will do so in the least mystical way possible. How do we minimize the mysticism? We use the Holy Bible as our source document, and one passage, specifically, gives us strong guidance as to what God expects of us to qualify for his salvation. That passage is Revelation 13, which includes the letters to the seven churches in Asia. We will dig deep to find out what the core meanings of obscure references to ancient churches means to us today and how this passage can help us determine our eternal fate. You will come to find that these ancient words will provide extremely valuable teachings for your deepest needs today. Specific benchmarks on what it takes to make it into heaven in the afterlife are contained in this passage. Join me on an ultimate adventure to discover the keys to eternal salvation.

Book excerpt: Experimental philosophy was an exciting and extraordinarily successful development in the study of nature in the seventeenth century. Yet experimental philosophy was not without its critics and was far from the only natural philosophical method on the scene. In particular, experimental philosophy was contrasted with and set against speculative philosophy and, in some quarters, was accused of tending to irreligion. This volume brings together ten scholars of early modern philosophy, history and science in order to shed new light on the complex relations between experiment, speculation and religion in early modern Europe. The first six chapters of the book focus on the respective roles of experimental and speculative philosophy in individual seventeenth-century philosophers. They include Francis Bacon, Robert Boyle, Margaret Cavendish, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Isaac Newton. The next two chapters deal with the relation between experimental philosophy and religion with a special focus on hypotheses and natural religion. The penultimate chapter takes a broader European perspective and examines the paucity of concerns with religion among Italian natural philosophers of the period. Finally, the concluding chapter draws all these individuals and themes together to provide a critical appraisal of recent scholarship on experimental philosophy. This book is the first collection of essays on the subject of early modern experimental philosophy. It will appeal to scholars and students of early modern philosophy, science and religion.
