Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Authority of the Bible The present brief treatise is an outgrowth of special studies in inductive logic, begun in the midst of pastoral labors sixteen or seventeen years ago; and considerable portions of it were written at that time. The author found himself, as nearly all young pastors do when coming in practical contact with the unbelief of the age, compelled as never before to give a reason for the faith that was in him; and was continually called upon to answer in the presence of the doubtful and unbelieving such questions as these: 1. What are both the general and specific grounds of confidence in the truths of the Christian religion? The author's answer to this question may be found in the little treatise on "The Logic of Christian Evidences," published four years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Origin and Authority of the Bible Believing that a small work, setting forth in simple language some of the evidences of the divine origin and authority of the Bible would be acceptable to the masses of the people and would be read with interest and profit by them, I have written the present work. It is not a compilation, but almost an exclusively original composition, presenting new arguments and evidences not to be found elsewhere. Vast efforts are being made by professed scientists and infidels to undermine the Bible, and thus overthrow the Christian faith. But all their efforts will prove futile and vain. They will only pull down destruction upon themselves, while the Book will stand, as it has always stood, all the wrath of men and the malice of devils. You must not suppose that this is all that can be said in defense of the Bible. It is a very meager sketch. It is not the thousandth part Volumes upon volumes might be written without exhausting it. Evidences of Christianity have been written oftentimes by profoundly able and scholarly men, but the evidences (that is all the evidences) have never been written, and never can be written, for they sweep the universe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holy Scripture Verified: Or, the Divine Authority of the Bible, Confirmed By; An Appeal to Facts of Science, History, and Human Consciousness Whether the Bible is true, and worthy of all acceptation, or whether it is a wicked fabrication, and a clumsy imposture, is a question not merely nor mainly speculative, but strictly and highly practical, involving the interests, the happiness, and the obligations of all. As we believe and feel upon this question, so will our conduct be affected for good or evil; and in so far as the generations coming after us must take their education, their institutions, their habits, and their religion, from us; so far their moral and social condition, also, to an extent scarcely appreciable, will depend upon the opinions we may form upon this momentous subject. In an age when the inroads of Infidelity are feared by some, and the growth of superstition by others, it cannot be deemed unseasonable to attempt an illustration, under a somewhat new form, of the eternal and blessed verity of Holy Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book Above All: Or the Holy Bible the Only Sensible, Infallible and Divine Authority on Earth "The times seem to call, with unusual emphasis and interest, for something of this kind. Sceptical developments, even among ecclesiastical and collegiate authorities, make it painfully evident that the true character of the Bible is misunderstood by many of its professional teachers. With these mischievous perverters of great providential advantages, it is too plain to be longer doubted that 'science, falsely so called, ' has absorbed the attention and confidence due only to the Records of Divine Inspiration." Several years since, the author of these sermons having in view their immediate publication, wrote the above sentence, but was prevented from accomplishing his design by reason of sickness, which terminated in death. It therefore becomes a duty for others to perform - not only of loving affection to the departed, but also of supplying one of the great wants of the living - of meeting one of the great necessities of the times. If this want was felt years ago, because of the existing antagonism to the Word of God; surely, much more must it be felt now, in view of the recent developments in our own country, especially regarding the bitter hostility of the Roman Catholic Church against its use in our own schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inspiration of the Bible The following Essay on the Inspiration of the Bible, has been prepared from the first part of an interesting book entitled Lucilla, or the Reading of the Bible. Originally written in French by Rev. Mr. Monod, recently translated and published by the London Religious Tract Society. The design of the Author in that work is to show, in the first - place, that the Bible is the W ord of God, and consequently of Divine authority; and in the second place, that it is at once the privilege and the duty of all men to read it with reference to their personal salvation. The first part, the substance of which is given in the following pages, is in the form of Letters, and a Dialogue between a French Abbe, Mr. Lasalle and Lucilla, the iwife of Mr. L., which for several reasons it was thought best to abridge and condense into a continuous discourse. In doing this, great care has been taken to preserve Mr. Monod's argument entire, and his language so far as was practicable. The portions omitted belong not to the substance but the form of the discussion; and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Christian people need a permanent authoritative standard to govern their spiritual affairs. Because Christian faith unquestionably rests, builds, and abides on authority. But, on whose authority can saving faith rely with true assurance? Obviously, on the authority of him who gave to the world the Word of truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The obvious riddles and difficulties in Exod 3:13–15 and Exod 6:2–8 have attracted an overwhelming amount of attention and comment. These texts make important theological statements about the divine name YHWH and the contours of the divine character. From the enigmatic statements in Exod 3:13–15, most scholars reconstruct the original form of the name as “Yahweh,” which is thought to describe YHWH’s creative power or self-existence. Similarly, Exod 6:3 has become a classic proof-text for the Documentary Hypothesis and an indication of different aspects of God’s character as shown in history. Despite their seeming importance for “defining” the divine name, these texts are ancillary to and preparatory for the true revelation of the divine name in the book of Exodus. This book attempts to move beyond atomistic readings of individual texts and etymological studies of the divine name toward a holistic reading of the book of Exodus. Surls centers his argument around in-depth analyses of Exod 3:13–15, 6:2–8 and Exod 33:12–23 and 34:5–8. Consequently, the definitive proclamation of YHWH’s character is not given at the burning bush but in response to Moses’ later intercession (Exod 33:12–23). YHWH proclaimed his name in a formulaic manner that Israel could appropriate (Exod 34:6–7), and the Hebrew Bible quotes or alludes to this text in many genres. This demonstrates the centrality of Exod 34:6–7 to Old Testament Theology. The character of God cannot be discerned from an etymological analysis of the word yhwh but from a close study of YHWH’s deliberate ascriptions made progressively in the book of Exodus.
