Book excerpt: Jerusalem, the holiest of holy cities, revered and contested by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. The claims of the first two are amply and handsomely documented in a great spate of books, many of them eulogies or devotional tracts rather than histories. But it is Muslim Jerusalem that few of us comprehend, though the idea of it has run like a bloodily glowing thread through most of what has happened in the Middle East since 1948. Here F.E. Peters, an eminent historian of both Jerusalem and Islam, looks at that neglected side of this most publicized and controversial of cities. The Distant Shrine is neither a brief for a Muslim Jerusalem nor a polemic against Islam, but a serious and objective unfolding of what Jerusalem has meant to Muslims from their first settlement there down to the beginning of modern times. It is also history writing at its best: convincing in its grasp, comprehensive in its presentation, elegant in its expression. The Distant Shrine is that rarest of all histories: a work for the scholar and the layman alike.

Book excerpt: The Quran is a sacred book with profound, and familiar, Old and New Testament resonances. And the message it promulgated, Islam, came of age during an extraordinarily rich era of interaction among monotheists. Jews, Christians, and Muslims not only worshipped the same God, but shared aspirations, operated in the same social and economic environment, and sometimes lived side by side, indistinguishable by language, costume, or manners. Today, of course, little of this commonality is apparent, and Islam is poorly understood by most non-Muslims. Entering Islam through the same biblical door Muhammad did, this book introduces readers with Christian or Jewish backgrounds to one of the world's largest, most active, and--in the West--least understood religions. Frank Peters, one of the world's leading authorities on the monotheistic religions, starts with the central feature of Muslim faith and life: the Quran. Across its pages move Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, Solomon, John the Baptist, Jesus, and the Virgin Mary. The Quran contains remarkably familiar accounts of Genesis, the Flood, Exodus, the Virgin Birth, and other biblical events. But Peters also highlights Muhammad's very different use of Scripture and explains those elements of the Quran most alien to Western readers, from its didactic passages to its remarkable poetry. Peters goes on to cogently explain Islam's defining features--including the significance of Mecca, the manner of Muhammad's revelations, and the creation of the unique community of Muslims, all in relation to the Judeo-Christian tradition. He compares Jesus and Muhammad, describes Islamic commandments and rituals, details the structures of Sunni and Shi'ite communities, and lays out central Islamic beliefs on war, women, mysticism, and martyrdom. The result is a crucial and extremely accomplished book that offers Western readers a professional yet highly accessible understanding of Islam, and at a time when we need it most.

A little girl called Alice. A deaf-mute. A vision. A lady in shimmering white who says she is the immaculate conception. And Alice can suddenly hear and speak, and she can perform miracles. Soon the site of the visitation, beneath an ancient oak tree, has become a shrine, a holy place for thousands of pilgrims. But Alice is no longer the guileless child overwhelmed by her new saintliness. She has become the agent of something corrupt, a vile force that is centuries old.

Book excerpt: Horos Dios draws on a wide variety of literary and archaeological evidence to argue that an Archaic horos inscription and other rock cuttings on the northeast slope of the Hill of the Nymphs in Athens are remnants of a shrine of Zeus Meilichios, a popular god of purification worshipped widely in Athens, Attica, and the greater Greek world.

Book excerpt: Sacred Journeys in the Counter-Reformation examines long-distance pilgrimages to ancient, international shrines in northwestern Europe in the two centuries after Luther. In this region in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, saints’ cults and pilgrimage were frequently contested, more so than in the Mediterranean world. France, the Low Countries and the British Isles were places of disputation and hostility between Protestant and Catholic; sacred landscapes and journeys came under attack and in some regions, were outlawed by the state. Taking as case studies hugely popular medieval shrines such as Compostela, the Mont Saint-Michel and Lough Derg, the impact of Protestant criticism and Catholic revival on shrines, pilgrims’ motives and experiences is examined through life writings, devotional works and institutional records. The central focus is that of agency in religious change: what drove spiritual reform and what were its consequences for the ‘ordinary’ Catholic? This is explored through concepts of the religious self, holy materiality, and sacred space.
