Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discharge of Electricity in Gases The discoveries made during the last fifty years concerning the discharge of electricity through gases and the determination of the close relationship between the phenomena of this discharge and the recently studied properties of the radioactive substances have opened new fields for experiment and speculation. The prediction of Faraday, that the study of the electrical discharge in gases might eventually load us to a more thorough understanding of the nature of matter and electricity, is being gradually realized. Thus the existence in the chemical atom of much smaller particles, which probably are the same in all Substances may now be looked upon as an established fact. The structural character of electricity also is, at the present day, more than a mere hypothesis. Moreover this discharge has already proved of more than purely scientific interest. The mere mention of the mercury-arc lamp and of the mercury-arc alternating-current rectifier will be enough to show the practical use now made of some of the properties discovered The mercury-arc rectifier, which has been put on the market quite recently, bids fair to take a very prominent place among rectifying devices on account of its efficiency and convenience in handling. Excerpt: ...above I found it impossible to get a current of electricity to pass through the gas, however hot it might be, unless the electrodes were hot enough to glow. A current passing through the hot gas was immediately stopped by placing a large piece of cold platinum foil bi, tween the electrodes, even though a strong up-current of the hot gas was maintained to prevent the gas getting chilled by the cold foil. As soon as the foil began to glow, the current of electricity through the gas recommenced. This is one among many instances of the difficulty with which electricity passes from a gas to cold metal. I examined also the conductivities of several metallic vapours, including those of sodium, potassium, thallium, cadmium, bismuth, lead, aluminium, magnesium, tin, zinc, silver, and mercury. Of these the vapours of tin, mercury, and thallium hardly seemed to conduct at all; the vapours of the other metals conducted well, their conductivities being comparable with those of the dissociable gases. Although mercury vapour does not conduct when heated, yet when exposed to Rontgen rays it conducts with great facility, and indeed to a greater extent than almost any other gas. Conduction by Flames. The gases which arise from flames conduct electricity, and they retain this power for some minutes after they have left the flame.1 The laws of conduction through flame gases are in many respects analogous to those of conduction through gases exposed to the Rontgen rays. Thus Giese ' (who was the first to suggest that electricity was carried through gases by the movement of oppositely charged ions) has shown that if the flame gases, on their way to the place where their eonductivity is tested, are traversed by an electric current, the conductivity is very much...
