Book excerpt: Dime Store Dynasty of J.H. Miller is an Autobiographical novel of entrepreneurial achievement of the American Dream in mid-twentieth century America. The story is framed by historical events of the era. Artisans who contributed to the success of the company are showcased as well as their artistic contributions which are significant in their own right. While working a refreshment venue at the 1938 World's Fair, John Hardin Miller discovered he was not cut out to be an employee, he had to be his own man. He had to forge his own path to success. Starting in his basement in Evanston, Illinois he found success in becoming a millionaire by age 24. Although the stars were aligned and the right people came along at the right time, he still suffered the agony of loss along the way. However, he never suffered defeat. Neither, family loss, tragic fire, nor Corporate-America shenanigan's were able to deter him from his lifetime of achievements. His wife Shirley was his mainstay as were his father Ray and brothers Max and Gene.Over a dozen U.S Patents as well as several international patents were granted for his inventions. Significant among them was his molding machine which he identified as Mold-A-Rama. The brand survives today under the "Mold-A-Rama Incorporated" trademark. The machines are found in museums parks, and zoo's where young patrons thrill to watch plastic souvenirs as they are molded before them. John Miller also founded the Olympic program known as "Future Olympic Champions" which provided schools across the country to award certificates and a trophy of Olympic recognition to athletic students. Each Easter season, yards and bushes are adorned with pastel plastic Easter eggs which are the invention of J.H. Miller. In addition, since before WWII Christmas Nativity displays made in his facilities still adorn homes yet today. All of Miller's children were extraordinary achievers as well and their stories are woven into the fabric of the book as well. Twenty years in the writing, it represents the true American Dream.

Here in a fabulous eBook bundle are three of her Christmas-themed mysteries in the series, perfect to cozy up with this holiday season. This collection starts with Six Geese A-Slaying, centered around the Caerphilly holiday parade. When the local curmudgeon playing Santa is murdered, it’s up to Meg and Chief Burke to tackle a two-fold mission: solving the murder and saving Christmas. Next in Duck the Halls, an unknown prankster is setting skunks and ducks loose in the New Life Baptist Church, seemingly to derail the Christmas concert. Before they can find the culprit, an elderly vestryman is found dead. Who would have murdered such a harmless old man? And will Meg ever be able to finish all of her shopping, wrapping, cooking, and decorating in time for Christmas Eve? And finally in The Nightingale Before Christmas, Mother volunteers to take part in a Christmas-themed decorator show house—each room of a temporarily untenanted house is decorated by a different decorator for the public to tour. Mother insists that Meg pitch in, and she finds herself surrounded by flamboyant personalities who feel their professional reputations are at stake. When the rooms start to be sabotaged and a designer turns up dead, can Meg catch the real killer to clear Mother’s name?

Book excerpt: Remembering Woolworth's brings back to life all the nostalgia and magic of the famous five-and-dime that captured the hearts of Americans for over a century Millions of Americans have fond memories of shopping at Woolworth's, wandering the aisles in search of a humble spool of Woolco thread, festive Christmas decorations, a goldfish or parakeet, or a blue bottle of Evening in Paris perfume. And who could forget the special treat of a grilled-cheese sandwich or ice-cream sundae at the famous lunch counter? These and countless other memories are celebrated in Karen Plunkett-Powell's Remembering Woolworth's. Packed with photos, first-hand remembrances, vivid anecdotes, and a lively, well-researched narrative, the book tells the story of how a poor potato farmer named Frank Woolworth created a merchandising empire that touched the lives of Americans in small towns, big cities, and everywhere in between. Chapters cover the store's humble beginnings, surviving the Great Depression, the civil rights sit-ins, Woolworth's around the globe, the popularity of Woolworth's collectibles, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversial yet beloved among audiences, Christmas-themed horror movies emerged in the early 1970s and gained a notorious reputation with Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984), depicting Santa as an ax-wielding maniac. Some parents and conservative groups condemned the film, while others embraced the portrayal of Yuletide as a backdrop for fear and dread. Drawing on interviews with directors, producers, special effects artists, photographers and actors, this book celebrates the sordid, colorful history of the Christmas horror subgenre. Psycho Santa films such as Christmas Evil (1980) and 3615 code Pere Noel (1989) are examined, along with "Yule-Die" slashers like The Dorm that Dripped Blood (1982), Black Christmas (1974) and Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972). Commercial successes like Gremlins (1984) and Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) are covered, as well as more recent releases such as Better Watch Out (2016), Red Christmas (2016) and Deathcember (2019). Rare photographs, promotional materials and an annotated filmography are provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nostalgia isn't what it used to be. For many of us, modern memory is shaped less by a longing for the social customs and practices of the past or for family heirlooms handed down over generations and more by childhood encounters with ephemeral commercial goods and fleeting media moments in our age of fast capitalism. This phenomenon has given rise to communities of nostalgia whose members remain loyal to the toys, television, and music of their youth. They return to the theme parks and pastimes of their upbringing, hoping to reclaim that feeling of childhood wonder or teenage freedom. Consumed nostalgia took definite shape in the 1970s, spurred by an increase in the turnover of consumer goods, the commercialization of childhood, and the skillful marketing of nostalgia. Gary Cross immerses readers in this fascinating and often delightful history, unpacking the cultural dynamics that turn pop tunes into oldies and childhood toys into valuable commodities. He compares the limited appeal of heritage sites such as Colonial Williamsburg to the perpetually attractive power of a Disney theme park and reveals how consumed nostalgia shapes how we cope with accelerating change. Today nostalgia can be owned, collected, and easily accessed, making it less elusive and often more fun than in the past, but its commercialization has sometimes limited memory and complicated the positive goals of recollection. By unmasking the fascinating, idiosyncratic character of modern nostalgia, Cross helps us better understand the rituals of recall in an age of fast capitalism.

Book excerpt: “Wonderful. . . . A must read come holiday time.”—Roanoke Times “Nobody does Christmas like Mary Kay Andrews.” — Debbie Macomber New York Times bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews's rollicking Christmas tale featuring the beloved characters from Savannah Blues and Savannah Breeze 'Tis the week before Christmas, and antiques dealer Weezie Foley is in a frenzy to do up her shop right for the Savannah historical district decorating contest, which she fully intends to win. Her motif is Graceland Blue Christmas, with lots of tinsel, an aluminum tree, and enough tacky retro doodads to fill the Grand Ole Opry. But no sooner is she certain she's one-upped the trendy shop around the corner when Weezie notices things going strangely missing from her display. Despite the petty burglaries of her mysterious midnight visitor, Weezie still has high hopes for the holiday. Perhaps even an engagement ring is in the offing from her chef boyfriend, though Daniel, usually moody around the yuletide, seems even more distant than ever. Throw in some seasonal eccentricities from Weezie's decidedly odd family, a miraculous 1950s Christmas-tree pin, and a little help from the King (Elvis!) himself, and even Scrooge would have to agree there's real magic in the Savannah air this Christmas.
