Book excerpt: The pandemic has taught us all how important it can be to look after our physical and mental health, and how worthwhile it is to invest in taking care of ourselves. This short book illustrates the main trends that are modifying the fitness industry worldwide and highlights contemporary relevance to strategic change. It outlines what is currently happening within the promising fitness market and analyses the major emerging trends and the scientific data, referring to startups that could become very interesting market players in the years to come. Sustainability and technology will be the subject of in-depth analysis, as they represent the main drivers that will guide the sector in the future. The book also considers the most important aspect of sustainability related to the fitness industry and wellness more generally: the Silver Economy. The analysis is supported by an extensive database involving the 100 leading companies in the sector worldwide. The novelty of this research is to provide a document analysing the typical characteristics of this market, consumption dynamics, consumer triggers, and underlying the socio-economic scenario. The treatment of key themes such as fitness-tech startups, sport strategic management and above all innovation and sustainability make the book unique and appealing to researchers, academics, students, and practitioners.

Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on small businesses, substantially accelerating business failure and adversely affecting financial viability. We consider these issues in the context of the fitness sector. The pandemic shifted patterns of human mobility, whereby the operating model of the fitness sector was suddenly negatively impacted by digital substitution. The sudden availability of digital exercising options raises questions about how digital substitution works in the manner by which consumers use fitness centers in the short and long term. We examine these issues using individual-level anonymized app usage and gym attendance data. We complement our individual-level analysis with aggregate analysis using foot traffic from Safegraph and combine this information with internet search data for fitness before and after the start of the pandemic. The mandated lockdowns and re-openings across states provide us with a natural experiment to examine the impact of digital substitution in the fitness sector both in the short-term and the long-term. By using staggered adoption of individual fitness app usage and gym attendance data based on GPS location, we can uniquely identify individual substitution patterns for about 17 months. We find that while there was a large digital substitution in the short term, this substitution waned after December 2020. Similarly, we show that gym attendance dropped at an aggregate level with increased search intensity for fitness-related keywords until December 2020, and then this association mostly disappears in the beginning of 2021. We find that the digital displacement is driven by the proximity to fitness centers, franchise arrangements in the fitness sector, and local political conditions. Our results highlight that fitness and wellness are highly localized and sensitive to local variations in public health and well-being. We find evidence that fitness apps substituted in person visits to gyms when people had access to high-speed internet.

Digital transformation is critical. But winning in today's world requires more than digitization. It requires understanding that the nature of competitive advantage has shifted—and that being digital is not enough. In Beyond Digital, Paul Leinwand and Matt Mani from Strategy&, PwC's global strategy consulting business, take readers inside twelve companies and how they have navigated through this monumental shift: from Philips's reinvention from a broad conglomerate to a focused health technology player, to Cleveland Clinic's engagement with its broader ecosystem to improve and expand its leading patient care to more locations around the world, to Microsoft's overhaul of its global commercial business to drive customer outcomes. Other case studies include Adobe, Citigroup, Eli Lilly, Hitachi, Honeywell, Inditex, Komatsu, STC Pay, and Titan. Building on a major new body of research, the authors identify the seven imperatives that leaders must follow as the digital age continues to evolve: Reimagine your company's place in the world Embrace and create value via ecosystems Build a system of privileged insights with your customers Make your organization outcome-oriented Invert the focus of your leadership team Reinvent the social contract with your people Disrupt your own leadership approach Together, these seven imperatives comprise a playbook for how leaders can define a bolder purpose and transform their organizations.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 95%, , language: English, abstract: The global revenue of the sports apparel industry is larger than it has ever been before. Digital transformation has been a driver for the industry, leading to digital innovations within the industry. This has led to the fall of market leaders while creating opportunities for new market entrants by capturing market share through leveraging new technologies. The company Nike has been the market leader in the sports apparel industry for several decades and is known to be a forerunner in innovation. The purpose of this research is to examine how digital transformation has affected Nike, Inc. and the sports apparel industry and how it will shape the future. A secondary aim is to investigate how Nike’s customers perceive these changes and to scrutinize their digital needs and expectations. This research furthermore aims to conclude about the digital needs and expectations of Nike’s customers and if they align with Nike’s strategy. The research used a triangulation of three methods and provides a holistic analysis to make recommendations to the management of Nike. Primary research was conducted through a questionnaire-based customer survey and expert interviews with the management and specialists at Nike. Secondary research included reviewing frameworks for strategic analysis. The analysis distinguishes digital natives (i.e. aged 21 years or younger) and digital immigrants (i.e. aged above 21 years). The results showed that these two groups differ in their sales-channel preferences, digital needs and expectations. The secondary research was confirmed by the findings from the expert interviews and customer survey. Overall, Nike’s digital transformation strategy appears to align with the needs and expectations of the company’s customers.

The future of the fitness industry will not only be characterized by dynamism as it continues to metaphorically evolve, but will also be eminently auspicious for fitness industry competitors and customers. Technological advancements are profoundly changing the fitness industry and are rendering it all the more technology driven. The fitness industry shows no signs of decelerating anytime in the imminent future. fitness industry competitors are poised to have prosperous, lucrative, and auspicious futures as disposable incomes rise among customers and as the desire to procure fitness club memberships builds traction worldwide among customers. Customers are making a more substantial investment in safeguarding their health. Procuring a fitness club membership offers customers the opportunity to vigorously workout on a daily basis. "Fitness clubs have ample exercise machines, such as rowing machines, treadmills, and stationary exercise bikes, and elliptical trainers, and workout equipment, such as barbells and dumbbells", for their members to utilize. Buying exercise machines and workout equipment can be expensive which is all the more reason why customers are enticed to procure a fitness club membership in order to be able to have access to exercise machines and workout equipment. Fitness clubs also offer group exercise classes, such as yoga classes and indoor cycling classes, and can even have sports facilities, such as swimming pools and and indoor running tracks, for their customer to access. Fitness clubs have a myriad of service offerings and offer unprecedented value to health conscious individuals. The fitness industry is slated to have a lucrative future, especially as customers become all the more health conscious. "The health and fitness club market was valued at $94,300,000,000 in 2018, and it is expected to reach $147,110,000,000 by 2024, witnessing a compound annual growth rate of 7.81% during the forecast period, 2019-2024. Consumers are willing to spend more on health and fitness club, with health aspect playing as a key role to drive the market growth across the world. The rising number of health clubs and gym with personal training and latest fitness equipment is attracting consumers to join the health and fitness clubs, which is likely to influence the market growth in upcoming years. Increasing equipment and facility spaces in fitness clubs, such as hot yoga studios, high altitude training rooms, metabolic testing equipment, medical exercise areas, and day spas are gaining popularity among the consumers, which is further supporting the market growth". The fitness industry has been able to robustly grow as a result of fitness industry competitors offering affordable membership fees and as a result of fitness industry competitors investing in digital marketing activities in order to entice more people to procure fitness club memberships. "Attractive membership fees offered by fitness clubs, increasing spending on marketing and advertisement, are helping the health and fitness clubs to generate more revenue". In the pending future, fitness industry competitors will continue to profusely invest in digital marketing activities in order to win over more members. In the coming years, the fitness industry is apt to experience robust growth partially as a result of people becoming more health conscious. "Globally, increased consumption of unhealthy food and sugar is causing obesity, which leads to diabetes."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Market research, grade: 1,0, Hult International Business School, language: English, abstract: The management report focuses on the fitness industry, specifically analyzing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry's profitability and identifying trends and opportunities for future growth. The report is divided into two parts, with the first part exploring the fitness market in general by examining the overall market composition and identifying trends and impacts on profitability using the STEP framework and Porter's 5 forces. The report identifies the rise in health awareness among the population and the upsurge in the popularity of exercising at home during the pandemic as opportunities for the industry's future growth. The second part of the report focuses on Peloton, a brand in the fitness industry that has gained significant market power. The report provides an introduction to the company, defines its business model, and analyzes its strengths and weaknesses. Peloton is the world's largest interactive exercise platform, with more than 3 million active users. The company was the first to provide linked, technology-enabled fitness programs as well as the live streaming of immersive, instructor-led boutique courses that could be viewed from anywhere at any time. The report also examines the resources and capabilities that have enabled Peloton's growth in the fitness market. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic causing a decline in the fitness market, the report highlights that the trend towards home workouts with on-demand content has ensured Peloton's position in the highly competitive market. However, the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the return to in-person gyms and training programs have caused Peloton's demand to decrease. As a result, the brand's stock price has decreased by x% within the last year, and it has momentarily paused manufacturing. The report suggests that Peloton needs to implement strong strategies to stay competitive and build resilience in global markets. These strategies have been applied on the Blue Ocean Strategy Model and consist of changing the pricing model of Peloton, creating a new product called the Peloton Watch to train independent of time, location, and equipment, and aiming for geographic expansion in countries with a similar demographic target group. Overall, the report highlights the challenges and opportunities facing the fitness industry and provides recommendations for Peloton to remain competitive and sustain its market position in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Lewis Miller, the celebrated floral designer and "Flower Bandit" himself, an intimate and joyous behind-the-scenes look at his signature Flower Flashes as they introduced bright moments of natural beauty into the city when they were needed most. Before dawn one morning in October 2016, renowned New York-based floral designer Lewis Miller stealthily arranged hundreds of brightly colored dahlias, carnations, and mums into a psychedelic halo around the John Lennon memorial in Central Park. The spontaneous floral installation was Miller's gift to the city—an effort to spark joy during a difficult time. Nearly five years and more than ninety Flower Flashes later, these elaborate flower bombs—bursts of jubilant blooms in trash cans, over bus canopies, on construction sites and traffic medians—have brought moments of delight and wonder to countless New Yorkers and flower lovers everywhere, and earned Miller a following of dedicated fans and the nickname the "Flower Bandit." After New York City entered lockdown, Miller doubled down, creating Flower Flashes outside hospitals to express gratitude to frontline health workers and throughout the city to raise spirits. This gorgeous and poignant visual diary traces the phenomenon from the first, spontaneous Flower Flash to the even more profound installations of the pandemic through a kaleidoscopic collage of photos documenting the Flower Flashes, behind-the-scenes snapshots, Miller's inspiration material, fan contributions, and more.
