Book excerpt: A fully automatic, low-frequency dielectric measurement system has been developed that will extend the measurement facilities of the Laboratory for Insulation Research two decades below 100 Hz. The system automatically balances, sweeps from 1 to 200 Hz while retaining balance, computes the value of loss tangent, and plots loss tangent and sample capacitance vs. frequency by means of two external recorders. Accuracy of the output plots is within 1% plus or minus 1 pf for the sample capacitance and 10% plus or minus 0.0001 for the loss tangent. Samples from 100 to 1100 pf, and 0.0002 to 0.35 loss tangent can be measured directly, while accuracy criteria determine minimum or maximum values for substitution measurements. A run from 200 to 1 Hz can be completed in about 45 minutes. (Author).

Book Synopsis Physical and Chemical Properties of Water by : Donald T. Hawkins
Download or read book Physical and Chemical Properties of Water written by Donald T. Hawkins and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-04 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is basic to terrestrial life, and its distribution has controlled the growth and spread of human civilization. The importance of water to modern industrial processes, urban planning, and agricultural development is hard to overestimate. With these compelling motivations, it is natural that more tech nical and scientific study should have been devoted to this one substance than to any other. Research on water and its solutions has exhibited a marked expansion during the last decade. In sig nificant degree, this has resulted from the availability of new experimental tools and techniques, and of dramatic advances in computing science. This combination, in skilled hands, promises eventually to explain the unusual properties of water and aqueous solutions in unequivocal molecular terms. like wise, one now has reasonable hope that the active role that water plays in biochemical processes will be revealed and explained quantitatively at the molecular level. Owing to the widespread scholarly interest in aqueous science, it is clear that guides to the overwhelm ing literature on the subject are valuable. They serve ideally to indicate what is known and what is not, which areas harbor controversies, and what types of research attacks seem most fruitful (in answering more questions than they raise!). Whatever time and resources need to be spent in preparing compre hensive bibliographies should be quickly offset in the total scientific community by the efficiencies generated.

Tentative Interpretation of the Relaxation Spectrum of Water in the Time and Frequency Domain written by Arthur R. VON Hippel and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of the presently available evidence, the following picture emerges: Quantum jumps induced by thermal phonon excitation in the near infrared disconnect water dipoles sufficiently from their surroundings to allow reorientation of these dipoles and a subsequent reorganization of their near-surroundings. In an applied electric field, these jumps can be measured as polarization spike signals in the time domain. The statistical correlation time between consecutive jumps of the same water molecule determines the relaxation time in the frequency domain. With increasing temperature the statistical average of the required activation energy moves from the intramolecular into the intermolecular region, and the effect of deuterium substitution on vibration frequency and time consequently falls. Infrared excitation and microwave relaxation spectrum are coupled in the frequency domain with opposite trends: motion of the excitation spectrum toward higher frequencies moves the relaxation spectrum toward lower frequencies and vice versa.
