Book excerpt: On 16 June 2013, the temple town of Kedarnath was devastated by the floodwaters of the Mandakini and the Saraswathi due to heavy rains in the area and the overflow from the Chorabari lake. Hundreds of people lost their lives, and more were reported missing, not to talk about the near-total decimation of what was once a thriving temple town. It’s in the backdrop of this disaster that the story of Mrityunjay is set. Mrityunjay, who is on a search for meaning in life, comes face to face with his mortality. It’s also the story of Ahalya who suffers from the trauma of betrayal in her earlier relationships and finds in Mrityunjay the redeemer who gives a new direction to her life. Apart from the slew of characters who form part of Mrityunjay’s journey, the river plays an important role in the book. The creative force of its serenity and the destructive nature of its turbulence on its journey to merge with the ocean are but allegorical representations of our journey through life. Does Mrityunjay find what he is searching for?

Book excerpt: Separated from the Himalayan ranges, Mount Kailash stands majestically about 16500 feet above the sea level, on a flat plateau overlooking the lakes and plains of Tibet. Mount Kailash has never been scaled. Since time immemorial, the region surrounding Mount Kailash has been associated with mystical beings and the occult. Kailash is a symbol of faith and divinity for followers of four major religions of the world. Despite the hardships faced due to the high altitude and cold climate, the faithful have been circumambulating Mount Kailash for the past thousands of years for deliverance from defilements of past lives. Some circle Mount Kailash for great indulgences in the present life. Lake Mansarovar is a freshwater lake at the highest altitude on Earth and is the source of the four major rivers--Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus and Sutlej-- of the Indian peninsula. There are recorded accounts of many saints who have endorsed the Kailash Mansarovar region as a region charged with spiritual energy, ideally suited to experiencing deep meditation and super-consciousness. This is the land of miraculous panacea herbs and the divine beings. This book is a travelogue with a difference: it not only gives a description of spiritual wandering in the most revered region of Kailash Mansarovar, but it also serves as a guide for the enthusiasts who are planning a pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar.

Book excerpt: About The Book “Eko Aham Dwitiyo Nasti, Na Bhuto, Na Bhavishyati.” “I am the only one, there is no other like me, neither in the past, nor will there be another in the future.” A personal sounding email in the midst of so much unsolicited junk, announcing “Your friend passed away” captures the author’s attention and takes him to a flashback mode. A long-lost friend with whom he had spent hours in deep, animated conversations, his views on varied topics ranging from the Universe, Origin and evolution of life to the Gods up there in the sky, and many others flashed past the mind. And then, the next day a parcel containing the dear departed friend’s writings, arrives with a note from his son that Mr. Shrestha had wished all this to be sent to his friend - the author, for his keepsake, and as a reminder of the good times spent together engrossed in such stimulating conversations. About The Author Hargovind Pant, after completing his Masters in Life Sciences, chose to be an educator and had a fulfilling career spanning forty-eight years as teacher and Principal of schools in India and Kenya. Having spent his almost entire life with “young Homo – sapiens” ( as he prefers to call his students ), he has immense faith in the capabilities of youth. He is firm in the belief that in the next two hundred years (only eight generations from today) humanity will have achieved much more than the cumulative achievements of almost half a million years Homo -Sapiens have been in existence. But all this with a caveat, if only we and our future generations would prove ourselves worthy of the gift of Prometheus. An avid reader, and too young to retire, Hargovind Pant gives motivational talks to students in schools and colleges. He lives in the beautiful hill station of Nainital (India) with his wife of fifty years.

Drawing narratives from spatial, temporal, and cultural contexts, the book analyses how conflict, abuse, domestic violence, contours of gender construction, and narratives of ableism affect a child’s transactions with society. While exploring complex manifestations of children’s experience of trauma, the volume seeks to understand the issues related to translatability/representation, of trauma bearing in mind the fact that children often lack the language to express their sense of loss. The book in its study of childhood trauma does a close exegesis of select literary pieces, drawings done by children, memoirs, and graphic narratives. Academicians and research scholars from the disciplines of childhood studies, trauma studies, resilience studies, visual studies, gender studies, cultural studies, disability studies, and film studies stand to benefit from this volume. The ideas that have been expressed in this volume will richly contribute towards further research and scholarship in this domain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contentious Traditions analyzes the debate on sati, or widow burning, in colonial India. Though the prohibition of widow burning in 1829 was heralded as a key step forward for women's emancipation in modern India, Lata Mani argues that the women who were burned were marginal to the debate and that the controversy was over definitions of Hindu tradition, the place of ritual in religious worship, the civilizing missions of colonialism and evangelism, and the proper role of the colonial state. Mani radically revises colonialist as well as nationalist historiography on the social reform of women's status in the colonial period and clarifies the complex and contradictory character of missionary writings on India. The history of widow burning is one of paradox. While the chief players in the debate argued over the religious basis of sati and the fine points of scriptural interpretation, the testimonials of women at the funeral pyres consistently addressed the material hardships and societal expectations attached to widowhood. And although historiography has traditionally emphasized the colonial horror of sati, a fascinated ambivalence toward the practice suffused official discussions. The debate normalized the violence of sati and supported the misconception that it was a voluntary act of wifely devotion. Mani brilliantly illustrates how situated feminism and discourse analysis compel a rewriting of history, thus destabilizing the ways we are accustomed to look at women and men, at "tradition," custom, and modernity.
