Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of a Free Kindergarten The work of the Kindergarten in a half forgotten corner of Edinburgh, like that in many another half-forgotten corner in Great Britain and America, is one that begets interest and sympathy in every understand ing heart. It seems very small, so small that it is constantly overlooked, and its influence constantly minimised, but in reality it is big with promise and rich in results. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ... opened bud, and also keep their garden clear of rubbish. It is having a direct effect upon the grown-up inhabitants of the immediate neighbourhood too, for they now refrain from using it as a rubbish heap--they admire and protect it. The children are taught to use their hands in many ways, such as clay-modelling and sewing. A few of the oldest are learning to read, and this is the only lesson which one feels is not perhaps worth the great additional work it must be to the teacher, for it is not greatly important that they should be able to read at six years old. ' The Child-Garden is carried on in connection with S. Saviour's Mission. Prayers are held every day, but it is not only during prayers that the children are taught to feel that their Lord is with them--that overflows, as it were, into all their work and play. The children themselves are for the most part from very poor homes. A few show sad marks of poverty and neglect, but nearly all are sweet and winsome babies, and one realises intensely that class distinctions are artificial, and the result of circumstances. It is terrible to think that in a few years these dear little comrades may faith in the race 73 become the poor, draggled, overburdened little boys and girls so numerous in that part. There is surely no inherent reason why they should not grow up with a love of cleanliness, with some culture, some true education. They may not be so quick as children of the " better classes." It is difficult to get them to pay attention to anything for long, and perhaps difficult also to make them understand and take an interest in anything new. But then their experience outside school has been so very limited, and what experiences have their parents had which they could profitably hand...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kindergarten Journal, Vol. 1: Autumn 1910 Just then a little girl prettier than any of the others came out on the porch and beckoned to him. Off went his hat again. It's my birthday and I have a party and Papa said I might give these to you, she said, as she handed him a plate of ice cream and cake and some oranges. Do you know, children, Jim had never tasted ice cream in all his life and as he was hot and tired, you can just think how good it looked! I thank you so much, he said, laughing all over his black face. He ate the ice cream and cake and put the oranges in his pocket to take home to his mother and just then Mr. Lloyd called him into the library. Please give this letter to the overseer, Jim, he said, and here is some money for your trouble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kindergarten Journal, Vol. 7: Summer, 1911 In St. Louis last year, representatives of the Kindergarten Asso mation of Cincinnati promised a royal good time if the International Kindergarten Union would decide in favor of that city for their next meeting place. They certainly more than fulfilled their promise. \ve were shown all the hospitality possible in a large city. Most of the Kindergartners had arrived by Tuesday morning, so that morning was set aside as the best time to visit the Kinder gartens of the city. Private automobiles had been loaned for our use, and many of us had the opportunity of seeing the beautiful sec tions of the city on our way to the Kindergartens. We were driven through Eden Park, a lovely natural park, the pride of the citizens of Cincinnati, and through the finest residence section, Walnut Hills. The day was perfect, the sun shone warmly on the new green of trees and lawns. The tulips, hyacinths, and lilacs were in bloom, and it was a sharp contrast to a great many of us who came from cities farther north. Upon leaving the Kindergartens, we were driven out to Burnet W'oods to see the magnificent Hughes High School. The Principal showed us over the entire building. It is splendidly equipped. After this sight-seeing trip, we felt that we had been given a fine introduction to the week's program. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the Silver Street Free Kindergarten). With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kindergarten Stories for the Sunday School and Home The spirit of reverence is often destroyed by the gestures which are introduced with the songs. Miss Beard, in her pamphlet entitled Music in the Prim ary Sunday School, emphasizes the fact that ges tures, as a rule, detract from, rather than add to, the helpfulness of the songs. In an introductory chapter to her book, The Kindergarten Sunday School, she offers many helpful suggestions regarding the music in the Kindergarten. In singing, though the words are of supreme im portance and should not only be such as to impress the desired truth, but also should be so simple as to come easily within the child's comprehension, the musical setting is likewise essential. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of good Sunday School music and for my stories I have frequently been obliged to suggest songs for the sake of the words, though the music was unsatisfactory. Too many songs should not be given, as it is bet ter to have a few thoroughly learned than many only partially committed. Though new songs have some times been suggested on successive Sundays, it has been intended that a choice should be made from them, not that all should be used. In order to prevent self-consciousness, it is rarely wise to ask individual children to sing or speak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. P., Una, and Rosebud took their departure, leaving Julian and me in possession of the Red Shanty. The first observation which the old gentleman made thereupon was, - "Papa, isn't it nice to have baby gone? His perfect confidence in my sympathy in this feeling was very queer. "Why is it nice?" I inquired. "Because now I can shout and squeal just as loud as I please!" answered he. And for the next half hour he exercised his lungs to his heart's content, and almost split the welkin thereby. Then he hammered on an empty box, and appeared to have high enjoyment of the racket which he created. In the course of the forenoon, however, he fell into a deep reverie and looked very pensive. I asked him what he was thinking of, and he said, "Oh, about mamma's going away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The magic and wonder of winter’s first snowfall is perfectly captured in Ezra Jack Keat’s Caldecott Medal-winning picture book. Young readers can enjoy this celebrated classic as a full-sized board book, perfect for read-alouds of all kinds and a great gift for the holiday season. In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. Universal in its appeal, this story beautifully depicts a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. This big, sturdy edition will bring even more young readers to the story of Peter and his adventures in the snow. Ezra Jack Keats was also the creator of such classics as Goggles, A Letter to Amy, Pet Show!, Peter’s Chair, and A Whistle for Willie. (This book is also available in Spanish, as Un dia de nieve.) Praise for The Snowy Day: “Keats made Peter’s world so inviting that it beckons us. Perhaps the busyness of daily life in the 21st century makes us appreciate Peter even more—a kid who has the luxury of a whole day to just be outside, surrounded by snow that’s begging to be enjoyed.” —The Atlantic "Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly
