Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extraordinary new book by the British author, John Joss, will amaze, entertain and educate readers of all ages. Its 300 pages contain fifty remarkable 'incidents, ' each a riveting story in itself. INCIDENTS is a sweeping biographical chronicle of a venturesome, joyful and successful life. It moves, with never a dull page, from amusing and poignant childhood anecdotes to risking his life- flying military aircraft and gliders, racing on two and four wheels, and sailing the oceans. The breadth and depth of experience and the sheer audacity of this multi-faceted and enterprising man would be hard to equal by many men, combined. John Joss entered the Royal Navy in England at 16, took initial pilot training, but was near-fatally injured in a motorcycle accident while returning to his ship. Invalided from the Service, he went to work, writing initially for a motorcycle magazine, then for industry. He emigrated to America, working first for corporations, then freelance, writing about business, technology and military aviation and participating in the world technology business center, Silicon Valley. He has raced cars, motorcycles, dinghies and yachts, trodden London's West End stages, explored Mexico, worked in the Gulf of Mexico oil patch, flown the Space Shuttle Simulator, evaded a Soviet military spy in Washington, helped find the sunken nuclear submarine Thresher, flown with the Blue Angels, the Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force and written business plans for Silicon Valley startups. He became the first journalist-pilot to fly and write about the U-2 spy plane, dodged a minefield at Fort Irwin, California, wrote for major media, did radio commercials and documentary voice-overs, soared gliders in the Sierra Nevada, created a high-tech series for network radio, commentated at car and motorcycle racetracks, sailed around the world, penned twenty novels, nonfiction books, screenplays and plays, and fathered three daughters. Not boring. Just as he wished.

Book excerpt: ** From Emmy Award-winning writer Rachel McRady comes a vital, illuminating debut novel about memory, storytelling and a broken family uniting in the face of a terrifying crisis. ** Six-year-old Gracie Lynn is perpetually curious and bighearted. Convinced she knows how to save her beloved grandfather John from the 'worm' that is eating his brain - a metaphor her mother once used to explain John's dementia and sundown syndrome - Gracie helps him break out of his nursing home, and the two disappear together on a quest to chase the sun. But what's an adventure for Gracie is a nightmare scenario for her estranged parents, LeeAnn and Dan. There's no way to predict where John might have taken their young daughter, or if he's capable of keeping her safe. An emotionally resonant novel, Sun Seekers artfully explores the truths of parenthood, the ways in which we sometimes hurt those we love most and the universal experience of deep loss - even when the person is still here. Perfect for fans of Fredrik Backman, Clare Pooley, Mark Haddon and Nicholas Sparks, as well as the hit TV series Parenthood and This Is Us PRAISE FOR SUN SEEKERS 'A heartwrenching tribute to familial trauma, guilt and loss, Sun Seekers makes for a captivating, beautiful holiday read' - Daily Mail 'In her impactful debut, Rachel McRady explores the intricate dynamics of a fractured family. Through multiple perspectives, she paints a poignant portrait of the complexities of relationships that resonate with us all' - Jo Piazza, author of We Are Not Like Them 'A vivid and often wise exploration of grief, told through the lens of alternating narrators... Sun Seekers explores how we grieve and who we love, despite our struggles to maintain a brave front in the aftermath of great loss' - Jaimee Wriston, author of How Not to Drown 'Sun Seekers is my favorite type of novel: beautifully written prose delivering deep truths about family and the nature of grief. I absolutely loved it. An incredible debut by a writer to watch' - Brenda Janowitz, author of The Grace Kelly Dress 'Rachel McRady's debut novel depicts the fabric of family dynamics in the voices of well-developed engaging characters. The emotional connections across multi-generations are genuine and kept me turning pages until the finale' - Suzanne Leopold, Suzy Approved Book Reviews 'Magnificent... A beautiful tribute to the suffering and hard-earned growth of these characters' - Booklist

Book excerpt: This book, in two volumes, breathes fresh air empirically, methodologically, and theoretically into understanding the rich ceremonial lives, the philosophical-religious knowledge, and the impressive material feats and labor organization that distinguish Hopewell Indians of central Ohio and neighboring regions during the first centuries CE. The first volume defines cross-culturally, for the first time, the “ritual drama” as a genre of social performance. It reconstructs and compares parts of 14 such dramas that Hopewellian and other Woodland-period peoples performed in their ceremonial centers to help the soul-like essences of their deceased make the journey to an afterlife. The second volume builds and critiques ten formal cross-cultural models of “personhood” and the “self” and infers the nature of Scioto Hopewell people’s ontology. Two facets of their ontology are found to have been instrumental in their creating the intercommunity alliances and cooperation and gathering the labor required to construct their huge, multicommunity ceremonial centers: a relational, collective concept of the self defined by the ethical quality of the relationships one has with other beings, and a concept of multiple soul-like essences that compose a human being and can be harnessed strategically to create familial-like ethical bonds of cooperation among individuals and communities. The archaeological reconstructions of Hopewellian ritual dramas and concepts of personhood and the self, and of Hopewell people’s strategic uses of these, are informed by three large surveys of historic Woodland and Plains Indians’ narratives, ideas, and rites about journeys to afterlives, the creatures who inhabit the cosmos, and the nature and functions of soul-like essences, coupled with rich contextual archaeological and bioarchaeological-taphonomic analyses. The bioarchaeological-taphonomic method of l’anthropologie de terrain, new to North American archaeology, is introduced and applied. In all, the research in this book vitalizes a vision of an anthropology committed to native logic and motivation and skeptical of the imposition of Western world views and categories onto native peoples.

Book excerpt: The Seeker’s Way brings hope to all who are longing for deeper considerations of what it means to connect with the divine. It serves as a guide to those who want to open themselves more fully to meaning, authenticity, and wholeness. In this book, author, leadership coach, and spiritual seeker Dave Fleming explores six central longings: From reliance on answers to the opening of experience; From activity to meaning; From control to compost; From Shadwo and Illusion to substance and reality; From performance to expression and freedom; From segregation to community The Seeker’s Way explains the practices that will help satisfy each of these very human longings and explores what it means to take a spiritual journey. Using the individual stories of prominent contemporary figures the book provides models of the seeker’s way. Their life stories and ideas about the spiritual journey illuminate the many ways that these central longings can be addressed.

Book excerpt: For decades the suburbs have been where art happens despite: despite the conformity, the emptiness, the sameness. Time and again, the story is one of gems formed under pressure and that resentment of the suburbs is the key ingredient for creative transcendence. But what if, contrary to that, the suburb has actually been an incubator for distinctly American art, as positively and as surely as in any other cultural hothouse? Mixing personal experience, cultural reportage, and history while rejecting clichés and pieties and these essays stretch across the country in an effort to show that this uniquely American milieu deserves another look.

Book excerpt: An investigative reporter explores an infamous case where an obsessive and unorthodox search for enlightenment went terribly wrong. When thirty-eight-year-old Ian Thorson died from dehydration and dysentery on a remote Arizona mountaintop in 2012, The New York Times reported the story under the headline: "Mysterious Buddhist Retreat in the Desert Ends in a Grisly Death." Scott Carney, a journalist and anthropologist who lived in India for six years, was struck by how Thorson’s death echoed other incidents that reflected the little-talked-about connection between intensive meditation and mental instability. Using these tragedies as a springboard, Carney explores how those who go to extremes to achieve divine revelations—and undertake it in illusory ways—can tangle with madness. He also delves into the unorthodox interpretation of Tibetan Buddhism that attracted Thorson and the bizarre teachings of its chief evangelists: Thorson’s wife, Lama Christie McNally, and her previous husband, Geshe Michael Roach, the supreme spiritual leader of Diamond Mountain University, where Thorson died. Carney unravels how the cultlike practices of McNally and Roach and the questionable circumstances surrounding Thorson’s death illuminate a uniquely American tendency to mix and match eastern religious traditions like LEGO pieces in a quest to reach an enlightened, perfected state, no matter the cost. Aided by Thorson’s private papers, along with cutting-edge neurological research that reveals the profound impact of intensive meditation on the brain and stories of miracles and black magic, sexualized rituals, and tantric rites from former Diamond Mountain acolytes, A Death on Diamond Mountain is a gripping work of investigative journalism that reveals how the path to enlightenment can be riddled with danger.
