Book Synopsis Dialogues and Debates from Late Antiquity to Late Byzantium by : Averil Cameron
Download or read book Dialogues and Debates from Late Antiquity to Late Byzantium written by Averil Cameron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogues and Debates from Late Antiquity to Late Byzantium offers the first overall discussion of the literary and philosophical dialogue tradition in Greek from imperial Rome to the end of the Byzantine empire and beyond. Sixteen case studies combine theoretical approaches with in-depth analysis and include comparisons with the neighbouring Syriac, Georgian, Armenian and Latin traditions. Following an introduction and a discussion of Plutarch as a writer of dialogues, other chapters consider the Erostrophus, a philosophical dialogue in Syriac, John Chrysostom’s On Priesthood, issues of literariness and complexity in the Greek Adversus Iudaeos dialogues, the Trophies of Damascus, Maximus Confessor’s Liber Asceticus and the middle Byzantine apocryphal revelation dialogues. The volume demonstrates a new frequency in middle and late Byzantium of rhetorical, theological and literary dialogues, concomitant with the increasing rhetoricisation of Byzantine literature, and argues for a move towards new and exciting experiments. Individual chapters examine the Platonising and anti-Latin dialogues written in the context of Anselm of Havelberg’s visits to Constantinople, the theological dialogue by Soterichos Panteugenos, the dialogues of Niketas ‘of Maroneia’ and the literary dialogues by Theodore Prodromos, all from the twelfth century. The final chapters explore dialogues from the empire’s Georgian periphery and discuss late Byzantine philosophical, satirical and verse dialogues by Nikephoros Gregoras, Manuel II Palaiologos and George Scholarios, with special attention to issues of form, dramatisation and performance.

Book Synopsis The Septuagint and Modern Study by : Sidney Jellicoe
Download or read book The Septuagint and Modern Study written by Sidney Jellicoe and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 1993 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Twenty-five years after it first appeared, Jellicoe's classic work is still one of the most comprehensive introductions to the Septuagint and cognate studies. Its completeness makes it valuable not only as a textbook, but also as a reference tool for those working in the Septuagint. In bringing together the principal features of twentieth-century Septuagint studies, the author provides a wealth of valuable information. The first part of the book traces the origins and transmission history of the LXX. The second part moves to a discussion of the various LXX manuscripts, versions, and critical editions, along with a brief discussion of language and style. The appendixes, bibliography, and various indexes increase the resource value of this volume."
Book Synopsis Exploring the Scripturesque by : Robert Alan Kraft
Download or read book Exploring the Scripturesque written by Robert Alan Kraft and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays span about a third of a century and include both previously published and some unpublished studies by Robert A. Kraft which focus on interfaces between Jewish materials and the worlds in which they were transmitted and/or perceived, especially Christian contexts. The initial section on general context and methodology is followed by several detailed studies by way of example. The final section touches on some related issues involving Philonic and other texts. The primary concern is with "scripturesque" materials and traditions, whether they later became canonical or not, that seem to have been respected as “scriptural” by some individuals or communities in the period prior to (or apart from) the development of an exclusivistic canonical consciousness in some Jewish and Christian circles.
Book Synopsis Jewish War under Trajan and Hadrian by : William Horbury
Download or read book Jewish War under Trajan and Hadrian written by William Horbury and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-18 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two major Jewish risings against Rome took place in the years following the destruction of Jerusalem - the first during Trajan's Parthian war, and the second, led by Bar Kokhba, under Hadrian's principate. The impact of these risings not only on Judaea, but also on Cyrene, Egypt, Cyprus and Mesopotamia, is shown by accounts in both ancient Jewish and non-Jewish literature. More recently discovered sources include letters and documents from fighters and refugees, and inscriptions attesting war and restoration. Historical evaluation has veered between regret for a pointless bloodbath and admiration for sustained resistance. William Horbury offers a new history of these risings, presenting a fresh review of sources and interpretations. He explores the period of Jewish war under Trajan and Hadrian not just as the end of an era, but also as a time of continuity in Jewish life and development in Jewish and Christian origins.
