Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nervous and Mental Diseases IT is the object of the author to bring together in the following chapters such matter in relation to the definition, classification, etiology, pathology, symptomatology, and treatment of insanity as will be of actual practical value to the medical student and general practitioner. The seeker after special information and deeper knowledge of the complex subject Of morbid psychology must be referred to the many profound works which deal with this exclusively. These chapters are based upon my clinical lectures given at the Manhattan State Hospital for the Insane and at the Randall's Island Asylum for Idiots during the past four or five years, to the students of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, and to the students of the Woman's Medical College of the New York Infirmary. They, there fore, embody only the facts which I believe to be the most serviceable and useful to those who are often practically concerned with the early diagnosis and prognosis of insanity, and who must be the first arbiters as to the course Of care and treatment to be pursued. In the light of such a family chart it will be seen that eugenics has both a positive and a negative side. The positive side of eugenics has to do with bringing about desirable conditions, while the negative side has to do with preventing undesirable conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Nervous and Mental Diseases When the writer began to lecture on Nervous Diseases nine years ago he was surprised to find so few homeopathic works upon this important subject. As the years went by he waited anxiously for the appearance of a work combining the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and the homeopathic therapeutics, but none made its appearance. Several works have come out partially covering the field, but none to which the student could turn and find what he desired stated in a brief and condensed form. This fact led the writer to publish the lectures which follow as a text-book, covering the above points, and in addition show ing in what diseases benefits from the application of electricity may be expected, and the best methods of applying it in the various diseases considered. The basis of the work is the lectures delivered before the students of the Kansas City Homeopathic College for the past nine years. It includes the main facts which relate to mental and nervous diseases, gathered and condensed from the works of all schools, from journals, and every available source. In the preparation of this work the author has used freely from every available book and journal published on the subject of nervous and mental diseases and electro-therapeutics, so that the student not only gets the benefit of the writer's experience but also that of all the leading writers on these subjects. This information could only be found scattered through a greater number of books and journals than are within reach of students and practitioners in general. It has been the aim and endeavor of the writer to simplify the various subjects so that students and practitioners will easily understand them. In regard to the manner in which he has dealt with the various subjects, the words of Ruskin would apply where he says: Certainly it is excellent discipline for an author to feel that he must say all that he has to say in the fewest possible words, or his reader is sure to skip them; and in the plainest possible words, or his reader will certainly misunderstand them. Generally, also, a downright fact may be told in a plain way; and we want downright facts at present more than anything else. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Mental Diseases: With Special Reference to the Pathological Aspects of Insanity It has, however, been my special object to present a resume of our knowledge of the structure and connections of the cerebro-spinal nervous system, of the architecture of the cerebral hemispheres, and more especially of the cortical envelope as the essential organ - the material substratum - of Mind; and to afford a concise account of the morbid changes found in the brain of the insane, as viewed in the light of recent research. It appears to me that a disproportionate amount of attention has been paid in former text-books to the clinical aspects of Insanity, and it is hoped that this attempt to deal more fully with the organisation of the material substratum of mind, and with the evidences of morbid change to which it is prone, will not prove unwelcome to the Student of Mental Disease. In the Anatomical Section, I have endeavoured to comprise such information as shall prove of utility to a more thorough conception of the ground-plan and superstructure of the nervous system; and it will be at once evident that special emphasis has been advisedly bestowed upon the cortical envelope - the structure, nature, and autonomy of the nerve-cell.viii preface. The Clinical Section comprises statistics based upon an analysis of cases of Insanity in both sexes, treated at the West Riding Asylum. In the Pathological Section, I have endeavoured to do justice to certain morbid processes, which appear to me to be of paramount importance in the history of Insanity; and more particularly would I here allude to the functions of the Lymph connective system of the Brain, and the life-history of the Scavenger-cell. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nervous and Mental Diseases: A Manual for Students and Practitioners; With an Appendix on Insomnia IN this age of rapid progress and evolution of new theories and sciences the student of medicine, who in four years is supposed to master the intricate and varied details of his chosen profession, and the busy practitioner, who must still spend a good part of his time in research and study to keep abreast with the rapid strides of advance, both feel the daily need of a text-book which will give them the essence of the subject which they are pursuing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book on Mental Diseases: For the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The Science of Mental Diseases advances so rapidly that there is no apology needed for new treatises. All modern English, French, and German hooks on the subject have proved highly instructive, and have served to educate the profession in a most important branch of medical knowledge. An endeavor is here made to set forth in a condensed but comprehensive manner the present state of the Science of Mental Diseases. The book is made to embrace the wide range of the history, statistics, nosology, etiology, clinical course, symptomatology, pathology, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of Mental Disorders. An attempt has been made to introduce such clear and systematic subdivisions as would best tend to facilitate the comprehension of the whole subject and render the work available for students and practitioners of medicine. The book aims to be a practical guide to the diagnosis and treatment of all the various types of Insanity with which the physician has to deal in public hospitals or private practice, and also to serve as a work of ready reference for psychiatrists, in the emergencies of their specialty. Parts of the treatise may merit the attention of psychologists and of all interested in the study of mental pathology.
