Download or read book THE FLEMISH written by Dean Amory and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word ""Flemish"" refers to the people living in the North of Belgium and France and the South of the Netherlands. The Flemish, also called ""Flemings,"" are of Germanic (Frank) origin. When the Franks invaded what is now Belgium, they settled between the sea and the ""charcoal forest,"" a dense old-growth forest of beech and oak, which extended to the Rhine and formed a natural boundary during the Late Iron Age through Roman times into the Early Middle Ages. The county of Flanders was created 864 when the French king Charles the Bald granted it as a fief to his son-in-law Baldwin with the Iron Arm. Flanders was a part of France but distinguished itself from the rest of the country with its Germanic Flemish population and close economic ties to England. Unlike other French fiefs it was never returned to the French king's control, instead Flanders became a part of the duke of Burgundy's possessions in 1384, which would evolve into present day Belgium.
Book Synopsis The Sustainability of Agro-Food and Natural Resource Systems in the Mediterranean Basin by : Antonella Vastola
Download or read book The Sustainability of Agro-Food and Natural Resource Systems in the Mediterranean Basin written by Antonella Vastola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused on the challenges to implement sustainability in diverse contexts such as agribusiness, natural resource systems and new technologies. The experiences made by the researchers of the School of Agricultural, Forestry, Food and Environmental Science (SAFE) of the University of Basilicata offer a wide and multidisciplinary approach to the identification and testing of different solutions tailored to the economic, social and environmental characteristics of the region and the surrounding areas. Basilicata’s productive system is mainly based on activities related to the agricultural sector and exploitation of natural resources but it has seen, in recent years, an industrial development driven by the discovery of oil fields. SAFE research took up the challenge posed by market competition to create value through the sustainable use of renewable and non-renewable resources of the territory. Moreover, due to its unique geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean basin, Basilicata is an excellent “open sky” laboratory for testing sustainable solutions adaptable to other Mediterranean areas. This collection of multidisciplinary case studies and research experiences from SAFE researchers and their scientific partners is a stimulating contribution to the debate on the development of sustainable techniques, methods and applications for the Mediterranean regions.

Book Synopsis The Role of Productivity, Transportation Costs, and Barriers to Intersectoral Mobility in Structural Transformation by : Cem Karayalcin
Download or read book The Role of Productivity, Transportation Costs, and Barriers to Intersectoral Mobility in Structural Transformation written by Cem Karayalcin and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of economic development is characterized by substantial reallocations of resources across sectors. In this paper, we construct a multi-sector model in which there are barriers to the movement of labor from low-productivity traditional agriculture to modern sectors. With the barrier in place, we show that improvements in productivity in modern sectors (including agriculture) or reductions in transportation costs may lead to a rise in agricultural employment and through terms-oftrade effects may harm subsistence farmers if the traditional subsistence sector is larger than a critical level. This suggests that policy advice based on the earlier literature needs to be revised. Reducing barriers to mobility (through reductions in the cost of skill acquisition and institutional changes) and improving the productivity of subsistence farmers needs to precede policies designed to increase the productivity of modern sectors or decrease transportation costs.
Book Synopsis Calvinist Exiles in Tudor and Stuart England by : Ole Peter Grell
Download or read book Calvinist Exiles in Tudor and Stuart England written by Ole Peter Grell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a synthesis of the research articles of one of Europe’s leading scholars of 16th-century exile communities. It will be invaluable to the growing number of historians interested in the religious, intellectual, social and economic impact of stranger communities on the rapidly changing nation that was Elizabethan and early Stuart England. Southern England in general, and London in particular, played a unique part in offering refuge to Calvinist exiles for more than a century. For the English government, the attraction of exiles was not so much their Reformed religion and discipline as their economic potential - the exiles were in the main skilled craftsmen and well-connected merchants who could benefit the English economy.
