Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life. When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades. A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized. Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family. For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide.

Book excerpt: The Devils Who Knew Too Much begins with a dead body, illicitly buried in 1945 and accidentally dug up in Pike's Wood in 1987. Archie Beresford and his pals, known as the Old Devils, know all about the corpse and how it got there. It was their secret and would have remained so if sweet Lola Spriggs had escaped her killer and not left half her fortune to a shiftless dog breeder named Preacher Boswell. Unfortunately, the Old Devils know all about Mr. Boswell, too. "The saucy, sexy senior citizens of The Devils Who Knew Too Much prove over and again that there's no fool like an old fool, especially when they're fooling around with each other. Author Jane Gillette makes merry with their attempts to deal with two murders, one forty years old and one current, and with the ongoing complexities of life and love. An extremely enjoyable and intelligent mystery." -Roger Miller, author of Invisible Hero.

Thirty-five years have passed since the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day turned the tide of World War II against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Reich, and it’s been more than three decades since the residents of the tiny French village of Le Vey witnessed the horrific slaughter of hundreds of German soldiers by thirteen black tanks. One of the tanks remains on the outskirts of town—its hatch mysteriously sealed, trapping its controller inside—only to be discovered by American surveyor and cartographer Dan McCook. Driven by curiosity and an inexplicable compulsion, McCook is about to do the unthinkable and release what lives within the tank upon an unsuspecting world. And once the monstrous occupant reunites with others of its demonic kind, a new world war will begin, one that threatens to wash the earth in blood and drag every man, woman, and child through the fiery gates of hell. A chilling and ingeniously original tale of demonic possession and apocalyptic possibilities, The Devils of D-Day is classic horror at its best, from the award-winning author of The Manitou.

Book excerpt: Lucifer, a benevolent devil if ever there was one, wishes to save an increasingly despoiled Earth. But how will he deal with the planet's most rapacious vermin-namely human(un)kind-who are beginning to encroach upon the sacred precincts of Hell? Lucifer assigns his son Loki, the quintessential trickster, to a top secret mission: to live among the Americans, observe their ways, infiltrate their culture, and get to know them more thoroughly than any devil ever has. Loki immediately incarnates as bon vivant secret MI-5 agent Roger O. Thornhill and is quickly plunged into a series of concentric mysteries and vivid tales. Thornhill, who is gifted with telekinetic powers, a gargantuan ego to accompany a perfectly sculpted body, and an eccentric vocabulary, makes the fatal mistake of falling in love with a mortal woman, Special Agent Margaret Dribble. As he tries to gain an understanding of human ways, Thornhill makes desperate visits to both the past and the future where he encounters heroes, wizards, demons, and ancient gods-each with his or her own tale to tell. Puzzles galore and arcane lore ensue as Thornhill tries to reconcile the love of the seductive Margaret with loyalty to his long-suffering father, Lucifer. "Brilliantly witty!" He learns that God sent angels to earth to round up the blue fairies and send them to a distant planet, which is what Stonehenge is for; but all the fairies didn’t leave. That is what they are dealing with now and the blue guardians are trying to get them back so they can rule the world. Jack grows young and strong, learning from Merlin and the ones he kills. He fights demons, and at the end, he fights Lucifer himself. There are three love stories that are woven into the story. I sure hope you enjoy it!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was fifteen years old, I married the boy that I had fallen in love with when I was just thirteen. Gerald was the only boy I ever truly loved, and after we married, we had to leave our little "ghost town" of Jacinto and move to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to make a living. I had never been more than twenty-five miles from home until then. My parents raised me in the Methodist religion, but after moving to Kenosha, I quit church completely and went deep into sin. The nightlife in the juke joints really got a hold of me, and I was lured into a life I never thought I'd live. I found out that that kind of life only leads to despair and heartbreak, and I began to wonder if God was real. Would He help a poor sinner like me? What life had in store for me proved that God is real and that He gave his only son, Jesus, so that I could have everlasting life. On my journey to find this truth, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in religion. I've seen false prophets, cults, and self-loving preachers. Come walk with me on my journey. I think in the end, you will have to agree with an old Baptist preacher who once said, "I do believe that old gal is real for God!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscapes of Devils is a rich, historically grounded ethnography of the western Toba, an indigenous people in northern Argentina’s Gran Chaco region. In the early twentieth century, the Toba were defeated by the Argentinean army, incorporated into the seasonal labor force of distant sugar plantations, and proselytized by British Anglicans. Gastón R. Gordillo reveals how the Toba’s memory of these processes is embedded in their experience of “the bush” that dominates the Chaco landscape. As Gordillo explains, the bush is the result of social, cultural, and political processes that intertwine this place with other geographies. Labor exploitation, state violence, encroachment by settlers, and the demands of Anglican missionaries all transformed this land. The Toba’s lives have been torn between alienating work in sugar plantations and relative freedom in the bush, between moments of domination and autonomy, abundance and poverty, terror and healing. Part of this contradictory experience is culturally expressed in devils, evil spirits that acquire different features in different places. The devils are sources of death and disease in the plantations, but in the bush they are entities that connect with humans as providers of bush food and healing power. Enacted through memory, the experiences of the Toba have produced a tense and shifting geography. Combining extensive fieldwork conducted over a decade, historical research, and critical theory, Gordillo offers a nuanced analysis of the Toba’s social memory and a powerful argument that geographic places are not only objective entities but also the subjective outcome of historical forces.

Book excerpt: And All the Devils Are Here weaves horror, humor and science fiction together into a genre-bending odyssey that leaves no stone of the supernatural unturned, including demonic possession, alien abductors and an inter-dimensional being that is certainly no angel. No topic is taboo, no belief system off limits as sacred cows of ancient and modern thought are mutilated all along the way from the first page to the last. With engaging characters, an intricate plot and a pace that only occasionally lets the major players catch their breath, And All the Devils Are Here transcends stereotypical horror in favor of creating a story that refuses to fit into any convenient category.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade after Hunter S. Thompson’s death, his books—including Hell’s Angels, The Curse of Lono, The Great Shark Hunt, and Rum Diary—continue to sell thousands of copies each year, and previously unpublished manuscripts of his still surface for publication. While Thompson never claimed to be a great writer, he did invent a new literary style—“gonzo”—that has been widely influential on both literature and journalism. Though Thompson and his work engendered a significant—even rabid—following, relatively little analysis has been published about his writing. In Hunter S. Thompson: Fear, Loathing, and the Birth of Gonzo, Kevin T. McEneaney examines the intellectual background of this American original, providing biographical details and placing Thompson within a larger social and historical context. A significant portion of this book is devoted to the creation, reception, and legacy of his most important works, particularly Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In addition to discussing influences on Thompson's work—including Homer, Nietzsche, Spengler, Melville, Twain, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Kerouac, and others—as well as the writers Thompson influenced, McEneaney also explains the literary origins of gonzo. With new biographical information about Thompson and an examination of his writing techniques, this book provides readers with a better understanding of the journalist and novelist. A look beyond the larger-than-life public persona, Hunter S. Thompson: Fear, Loathing, and the Birth of Gonzo will be of great interest to fans of Thompson’s work as well as to those wanting to know more about gonzo journalism and literature.

Book excerpt: Retief is an officer of the distinguished Corps Diplomatique Terrestrienne, a supra-national organization devoted to keeping the peace - or more accurately, to maintaining a state of tension short of armed conflict. Retief is not exactly in the mainstream of current Galactic diplomacy, as expounded by such giants of the C.D.T. as Crodfoller, Hidebinder, Straphanger, and his own immediate superior, Magnan. Deviously sincere, uncompromisingly venal, fearlessly cowardly, these great, dedicated public servants will seem curiously familiar as they strive to keep the peace seven hundred years in the future. But when Retief's on the scene things have a way of coming right in the end...
