Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The offspring of a profligate scoundrel and a drunken circus performer, Aleck Severn was born inside a prison's walls after his mother stabbed his father to death. Severn shows no outward signs of inheriting his parents' faults: a handsome, affable man about town, he is popular with his friends and beloved by his wife Marianne. But she begins to suspect her husband has a dark secret. What is he doing during those long nights alone at a remote house? And what connection could it have to the bodies of murdered women being found around London? One of the earliest novels inspired by the Jack the Ripper murders, The Devil in a Domino (1897) received mixed reviews when originally published, with critics praising the author's literary talent while decrying the book's horrific contents. A work of exceeding rarity, it survives in only a handful of known copies and has not been reprinted in over a century. This new edition features an introduction by Simon Stern. "[A] frankly horrible performance ... a gruesome compound of madness and butchery, with nameless horrors in the background. No sane person could find pleasure in reading such a story ... it would have been better had it not been written." - The Literary World "[A] peculiarly repulsive piece of writing, indicative of the low and morbid type of so-called literature which is purveyed to a half-educated constituency." - Edinburgh Evening News "In its diabolical horrors it recalls the ghastly series of crimes supposed to have been the work of 'Jack the Ripper.' Those who like to sup on sensation will find all they want in The Devil in a Domino." - Dundee Evening Telegraph

Book excerpt: "The first book of an exciting new paranormal series from two award-winning authors about what happens when an alien race brings Earth to the brink of the Apocalypse. The husband and wife writing team of Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes continue to achieve extraordinary literary feats with this first book in the exciting new Devil's Wake series. Due's The Living Blood and My Soul to Keep were each named to Publishers Weekly's list of Best Novels of the Year, and both were nominated for the Bram Stoker award. Barnes scored New York Times' bestsellers with The Legacy of Heorot and Star Wars: The Cestus Deception, and he has been nominated for both the Hugo and Cable Ace awards for his work in television. The eeriness of Devil's Wake begins a week after tomorrow. An unprecedented infection has swept across the world, bringing an epidemic of mindless biting attacks from the infected that leave their victims "changed." Society has broken down. The victims are more than mindless zombies. They are the result of a sinister alien life-form in the wake of the aliens' insidious plot, humanity ultimately becomes enmeshed in a brutal struggle for control of its home, planet Earth.Part Dawn of the Dead and part Road Warrior, Devil's Wake is a testimony to courage, friendship, and the power of faith. Horrifying and heartbreaking, exciting and challenging, it is a compelling, brilliant story on the edge of what could be the end of it all"--

But before they can even hope to be united with Pela and Annie Oster, Papa’s plucky sweetheart, Papa and Calley have to defeat not only Pelo Blanco but also the evil, murdering Arlon Clavic and deliver Little Missey, the mysterious Wild Woman a’the Navidad, to the safe haven of the Choat farm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When rock ’n’ roll emerged in the 1950s, ministers denounced it from their pulpits and Sunday school teachers warned of the music’s demonic origins. The big beat, said Billy Graham, was “ever working in the world for evil.” Yet by the early 2000s Christian rock had become a billion-dollar industry. The Devil’s Music tells the story of this transformation. Rock’s origins lie in part with the energetic Southern Pentecostal churches where Elvis, Little Richard, James Brown, and other pioneers of the genre worshipped as children. Randall J. Stephens shows that the music, styles, and ideas of tongue-speaking churches powerfully influenced these early performers. As rock ’n’ roll’s popularity grew, white preachers tried to distance their flock from this “blasphemous jungle music,” with little success. By the 1960s, Christian leaders feared the Beatles really were more popular than Jesus, as John Lennon claimed. Stephens argues that in the early days of rock ’n’ roll, faith served as a vehicle for whites’ racial fears. A decade later, evangelical Christians were at odds with the counterculture and the antiwar movement. By associating the music of blacks and hippies with godlessness, believers used their faith to justify racism and conservative politics. But in a reversal of strategy in the early 1970s, the same evangelicals embraced Christian rock as a way to express Jesus’s message within their own religious community and project it into a secular world. In Stephens’s compelling narrative, the result was a powerful fusion of conservatism and popular culture whose effects are still felt today.

When the local nun informs him of this mishap, he embarks on a quest to fix the situation. His best friend, Rob Rooney, tags along without question, because that’s how friendship works. That neither of them has any clue how to do it isn’t going to stop them. Armed with little more than pop culture knowledge and a healthy dose of irreverence, they adventure their way past ostriches, lawyers, chicken legs, and insurance agents, because if the Devil screws you out of your soul, you stop at nothing to get it back. Can Eddie save himself before it’s too late? Only the automated phone menu knows.
