Book excerpt: Abstract: Extended techniques play an important role in flute repertoire today, as composers continue to explore the possibilities of the instrument in ways not previously done before the mid-twentieth century. Pioneers of flute extended techniques, including Edgard Varése, Luciano Berio, and Robert Dick, have all played an important role in the progression of flute repertoire leading into the twenty-first century. Ian Clarke, a British flutist and composer, uses extended techniques as a vital element in his compositions, and has gained a great deal of attention for his breadth of work, including one of his more recent compositions, Hatching Aliens . First published in 2010, this work utilizes a vast amount of extended techniques, all of which contribute to the eerie and mysterious qualities of this programmatic composition for flute and piano. This project report studies the notation and production of extended techniques and how Clarke incorporates them into his composition, Hatching Aliens.

Book excerpt: Extended flute techniques include many different ways of producing non-traditional sonorities and effects on the flute and have been an important compositional staple of Avant-garde composers in the twentieth century. While many of these techniques developed exclusively within the Western tradition, many others derived from influence of non-Western flute traditions. Three East-Asian composers, Isang Yun (1917-1995), Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996), and Kazuo Fukushima (b.1930), contributed to this performance practice style by drawing from the flute traditions of their cultures. By focusing on the unaccompanied solo flute works of these three composers, this document will demonstrate many of the important applications of extended flute techniques in the twentieth century present their East-Asian influences and provide performance suggestions for this repertoire.

Book Synopsis Music of the Twentieth Century by : Ton de Leeuw
Download or read book Music of the Twentieth Century written by Ton de Leeuw and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ton de Leeuw was a truly groundbreaking composer. As evidenced by his pioneering study of compositional methods that melded Eastern traditional music with Western musical theory, he had a profound understanding of the complex and often divisive history of twentieth-century music. Now his renowned chronicle Music of the Twentieth Century is offered here in a newly revised English-language edition. Music of the Twentieth Century goes beyond a historical survey with its lucid and impassioned discussion of the elements, structures, compositional principles, and terminologies of twentieth-century music. De Leeuw draws on his experience as a composer, teacher, and music scholar of non-European music traditions, including Indian, Indonesian, and Japanese music, to examine how musical innovations that developed during the twentieth century transformed musical theory, composition, and scholarly thought around the globe.

Download or read book A Performer's Perspective on the Evolution and Realisation of Extended Flute Techniques written by Kathryn Emma Moorhead and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines the development and performance of extended flute techniques since Berio's Sequenza of 1958 to 2001. The project considers the unprecedented expansion of flute techniques since the Sequenza and the profound impact this has had on performance practice in new music composed for the flute. It addresses a number of critical issues faced by flautists in the absence of a standardised pedagogy and inconsistency of notation, and explores the role of the performer as a contributor in the performance of new music. The submission takes the form of four compact disc recordings of repertoire chosen from a wide timeframe, beginning with Claude Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune of 1894 and moving through to Daniel Börtz's Tinted Paintings in 2001. The repertoire was selected in order to highlight and explore problems encountered when performing extended techniques, and to demonstrate the ways in which various extended techniques are used by composers. In so doing the study brings into focus important issues of modern flute performance practice, and suggests possible strategies for addressing various technical and interpretative challenges.
