Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated whether the Spanish language and literacy skills of 116 Spanish-speaking bilingual preschool children in Miami-Dade County had incremental validity in predicting their English early language and literacy skills one year later. Print and vocabulary scores were divided into language skills that were unique to either English or Spanish or shared in both languages. English vocabulary and shared vocabulary at Time 1 predicted of English vocabulary scores at Time 2; however, Spanish vocabulary did not predict the English Pre-CTOPPP vocabulary scores at posttest beyond what was predicted by these two variables. English Print Knowledge at Time 2 was predicted by unique English and shared print knowledge scores but not by Spanish print knowledge scores. Additionally, Spanish scores on phonological awareness were not incrementally predictive of later English phonological awareness. These results suggest conceptual scoring may not be a useful assessment for predicting vocabulary or phonological awareness skills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of early literacy has seen significant recent advances in theory, research, and practice. These volumes bring together leading authorities to report on current findings, integrate insights from different disciplinary perspectives, and explore ways to provide children with the strongest possible literacy foundations in the first 6 years of life. The Handbook first addresses broad questions about the nature of emergent literacy, summarizing current knowledge on cognitive pathways, biological underpinnings, and the importance of cultural contexts. Chapters in subsequent sections examine various strands of knowledge and skills that emerge as children become literate, as well as the role played by experiences with peers and families. Particular attention is devoted to the challenges involved in making schools work for all children, including members of linguistic and ethnic minority groups and children living in poverty. Finally, approaches to instruction, assessment, and early intervention are described, and up-to-date research on their effectiveness is presented.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992. This book brings together the work of a number of distinguished international researchers engaged in basic research on beginning reading. Individual chapters address various processes and problems in learning to read - including how acquisition gets underway, the contribution of story listening experiences, what is involved in learning to read words, and how readers represent information about written words in memory. In addition, the chapter contributors consider how phonological, onset-rime, and syntactic awareness contribute to reading acquisition, how learning to spell is involved, how reading ability can be explained as a combination of decoding skill plus listening comprehension skill, and what causes reading difficulties and how to study these causes.

Book excerpt: This dissertation portfolio is comprised of three first-authored pieces of writing that investigate the oral language and emergent literacy development of Spanish-speaking children with specific language impairment (SLI). Each piece features a unique but complementary aim. The first study investigates group differences on a battery of emergent literacy skills between 15 preschool-aged children with SLI in Mexico and a control group of 15 typically developing children matched for age and socio-economic status. The second study explores aspects of the home literacy environment, including parents’ explicit teaching of literacy and children’s print interest, which may explain some of the variance in children’s emergent literacy ability that was observed in the previous study. The third piece of writing is a grant proposal that describes a parent-child book reading intervention seeking to improve children’s emergent literacy skills. Collectively, the studies provide a normative reference for the early literacy development of children with SLI in Spanish. Results showed that, as a group, children with SLI performed significantly worse than their peers on tasks of print knowledge and phonological awareness. Although no significant group differences were uncovered on classic home literacy variables, an interaction was observed between children’s language ability and their print interest, with implications for print knowledge. Implications for a Spanish language intervention that addresses these findings – both with respect to their emergent literacy skills, as well as their home literacy environment – are discussed.

Book excerpt: There is a growing need for more information regarding the early academic development of preschool-age children who are learning to speak Spanish and English. To achieve this, studies are needed that acknowledge the heterogeneity of language abilities within bilingual preschool children, and that these variations in language abilities may impact children's early academic skills. This two-study dissertation investigated how four foundational skills: narrative production, phonological awareness, letter-word identification, and early math, differed depending on the language dominance Spanish-English bilingual children possessed at preschool entry. The studies used data from a larger language, literacy, and self-regulation project entitled Tools of the Mind: Promoting ELLs' Language, Self-Regulation & School-Readiness. Participants were typically-developing children of Latino heritage recruited from early childhood centers with primarily English instruction. Performance on a standardized language battery given in English and Spanish was used to assign children to one of three language-dominance groups (i.e., stronger-English, balanced abilities, stronger-Spanish). Both studies yielded several findings that make unique contributions to research on bilingual preschoolers. The first study underscored the important relations of both lexical diversity and grammatical production abilities to bilingual preschoolers' narrative macrostructure. The second study identified specific areas of school readiness strengths for each language dominance group and identified areas that may need additional support. Implications of interest to speech-language pathologists and other early childhood professionals are discussed, including implications for assessment and differential instruction.

The rich landscape of outcomes reported in the volume will provide a frame for interpretation and understanding of effects of bilingualism for years to come.

Book excerpt: Four Latino preschoolers with limited emergent literacy skills in Spanish and English participated in this study. Bilingual researchers delivered scripted lessons targeting PA and AK skills. The results indicated that children made large gains in their Spanish PA skills and small to moderate gains in their AK skills. Children also applied the skills they learned in Spanish to English. These findings provide preliminary evidence Latino preschoolers who are DLL benefit from emergent literacy instruction that promotes their bilingual and biliterate development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second language learners often produce language forms resembling those of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). At present, professionals working in language assessment and education have only limited diagnostic instruments to distinguish language impaired migrant children from those who will eventually catch up with their monolingual peers. This book presents a comprehensive set of tools for assessing the linguistic abilities of bilingual children. It aims to disentangle effects of bilingualism from those of SLI, making use of both models of bilingualism and models of language impairment. The book's methods-oriented focus will make it an essential handbook for practitioners who look for measures which could be adapted to a variety of languages in diverse communities, as well as academic researchers.
