Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that certain diseases and patient conditions are associated with increased perioperative risk. The aim of this book is to define and identify the clinical factors that warrant a broader and more detailed assessment of pre-operative surgical risk in difficult and unusual clinical settings. One of the sections is dedicated to the main pathway of peri- and post-surgical critical care based on the patient-specific deterioration risk and associated diseases; here, a panel of selected experts describes the correct patient-oriented pathways for complex or unscheduled surgical operations in order to reduce the operative risk. In addition, the book describes the latest trends in minimally invasive surgical techniques that are associated with peri- and post-operative risk reduction, and provides an overview of recent advances in surgical simulation, focusing on perspectives in surgical research to increase patient safety. Guidance is also provided on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs), and their management in patients requiring emergency surgery. The book will help surgical trainees recognize cases with the highest surgical risk and identify the most common complications at an early stage.

Organized into four parts, Pediatric Sedation Outside of the Operating Room 3rd edition, begins with the foundational history of the pediatric sedation field. Subsequent chapters explore the basics of procedural sedation, pre-sedation assessments, and sedation policies across various specialties and continents. Part two then examines a multitude of sedation models divided by geographical location and subspecialty. Following this, Part three delves into standards of safety in sedation, including medicolegal risk factors, neurocognitive side effects, and aspiration risks. The book closes with chapters presenting discussions on the future of sedation, insofar as predictions for the role of simulation, medical malpractice, and the intersection of sedation and marijuana. An updated invaluable successor edition, Pediatric Sedation Outside of the Operating Room 3rd edition is accessible to a diverse group of sedation providers from all specialties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am delighted to be asked to write the Foreword for Management and Practice in Emergency Nursing. More than any other nursing speciality Accident and Emergency work reflects change in society because it is the casualties of social upheaval, imbalance and inequality that you face every day. Here, unfortunately, A and E staff are confronted on a regular basis with child abuse, family violence, the result of terrorist activities, social violence, motor car accidents, personal loss of loved ones, the frustrations and aggression of life. Sometimes, though, some pleasant and funny episodes do occur but all too infrequently to become the norm. My own experience of A and E nursing is very limited; in fact, it goes back to the days of the Department being linked with Orthopaedics and being called 'Casualty' . It could, though, appear that in this day and age the wheel is tuming full circle and moves have been made in the last reorganization to link the two new distinct specialities again. This proposal was met with lots of protest from A and E staff which appears to have been defused. The arguments stemmed mainly from the fact that orthopaedics and A and E are two quite difficult specialities of care and skills and as such must be seen as autonomous.
