Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is using spatial data management techniques in studies that are structured in a manner that requires spatial data management techniques to play a central and dominant role. The Corps of Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) provided the basic developmental work on the spatial data management and attendant processing techniques and it is continuing in the role of the basic technology transfer agent. The significant efforts required to document, maintain and service the technology and provide ready consultation service reported herein were planned for during the developmental efforts and are currently being centrally managed to encourage smooth adoption of the techniques by Corps field offices. Book Synopsis Application of the Finite Element Method to Vertically Stratified Hydrodynamic Flow and Water Quality by : Robert C. MacArthur
Download or read book Application of the Finite Element Method to Vertically Stratified Hydrodynamic Flow and Water Quality written by Robert C. MacArthur and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer program RMA-7 has been expanded to be able to simulate density induced flows and water quality conditions typically found in deep reservoirs. The mathematical basis for the program and methods of implementing the code for various kinds of flow are discussed. Results from two different applications are presented. The first example simualtes flow conditions that were measured in a physical model of a deep reservoir. Results are also included for simulations of the circulation, temperature and dissolved oxygen concentrations for Lake Taneycomo, Missouri. Comparison of measured and computed results from both applications shows that the RMA-7 model provides reasonably accurate results for both flow circulating and water quality. (Author).

Book Synopsis Operational Simulation of a Reservoir System with Pumped Storage by : George F. McMahon
Download or read book Operational Simulation of a Reservoir System with Pumped Storage written by George F. McMahon and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Richard B. Russell Dam and Lake Project is presently under construction and is being placed in tandem between Hartwell and Clark Hill, two existing multipurpose hydropower plants on the Savannah River. System operational simulations were performed in support of a feasibility study for the installation of pump turbines at Russell, using a version of the Corps of Engineers HEC-5C computer program modified for system power and pumped storage. Information developed from the simulations include system hydropower production, pumping energy requirements, daily reservoir pool fluctuations, and reservoir elevation statistics. This information was useful in judging the effects of the addition of pumped storage on system hydropower production and reservoir recreation useability, as well as in ascertaining efficient system operational methods. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arkansas River between Pueblo, Colorado, and John Martin Dam, a distance of about 125 river miles, is an alluvial, sand-bed river. It meanders between bluffs in a flood plain about one mile in width. During geologic time the downstream (eastern) portion of this reach has been migrating southward due to heavy sediment loads from northern tributaries. A local flood control project is being planned for the town of La Junta, which is in the downstream one-third of this reach. A study was undertaken to evaluate the future performance of various flood control alternatives with regard to channel stability, sediment movement, and project maintenance. The alternatives considered were various channel and levee configurations. Evaluations were based on both long-term (100-year period) and short-term (single flood event) hydrologic scenarios. The primary tool used in this study was the movable boundary mathematical model HEC-6 entitled 'Scour and Deposition in Rivers and Reservoirs.' The hydrologic and sediment regimes of the study reach are complex due to four tributaries and eleven major irrigation diversions. This paper describes development of representative data for the long-term analysis, operation of the model, calibration and simulation strategies employed, interpretation of model results, and computational aspects of this application.

Book Synopsis Dredged-material Disposal System by : David T. Ford
Download or read book Dredged-material Disposal System written by David T. Ford and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ensemble of analytic tools is used to identify capacity expansion alternatives for the Delaware River dredged-material disposal system. Characteristics of the river and riparian area are stored and analyzed with a geographic information system. Site attractiveness maps produced with these data yield an array of potential expansion sites. The least-costly schedule for acquisition of these sites is identified with branch-and-bound enumeration. For the enumeration, the operation cost of alternative expansion plans is evaluated with a network-flow programming model of the disposal system. (Author).
