Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Determination of Safe Yield of Underground Reservoirs of the Closed-Basin Type The writer has had opportunity to investigate a number of the important underground reservoirs of California, and in this paper he presents certain general principles which seem to him to be justified by the existing data. Although these principles may seem to be self evident, yet the writer has no knowledge that they have ever been applied to the practical solution of the problem in hand. To show the possibilities of their application, therefore, he presents data and studies for an underground reservoir in Owens Valley, California, where it was desired to ascertain the quantity of ground-water that could be developed safely without overdraft. Much of this information has already appeared in print* in greater detail, but the writer believes that the subject is of sufficient importance, and the component studies are of wide enough technical interest to be presented to the members of the Society for discussion and expression of opinion. Book Synopsis Groundwater Sustainability by : Robert E. Mace
Download or read book Groundwater Sustainability written by Robert E. Mace and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will provide a comprehensive discussion of groundwater sustainability, including what it is, how its definition has changed over time, why traditional assessments of it are wrong, how assessments of it are ideally multidisciplinary efforts recognizing that policy is more controlling of outcomes than science, and why achieving it is difficult once pumping exceeds sustainable levels of pumping. The book will provide a nontechnical background of hydrogeology relevant to groundwater sustainability and present several case studies from around the United States and the world. The book has been designed to appeal to academics, students, and practitioners. Academics, particularly those just getting into the subject, will find the book a useful entry in terms of management concepts and political realities of attempting to achieve groundwater sustainability. It will also be useful to academics in that the book will include discussions on the history and development of groundwater sustainability and the practical aspects of aspiring to and achieving sustainable production. Although not a textbook, the book could be used as the basis for teaching a course or as a supplement to a hydrogeology or groundwater management class. Accordingly, the book will include questions and additional reading materials at the end of each chapter. This book will also be useful to practitioners through non-technical explanations of the sciences, discussions of the nuances of defining sustainability in aquifers, and the presentation of case studies where sustainable management has failed and succeeded.

Book Synopsis The Handbook of Groundwater Engineering by : Jacques W. Delleur
Download or read book The Handbook of Groundwater Engineering written by Jacques W. Delleur and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-12-12 with total page 1006 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the increasing demand for adequate water supply caused by the augmenting global population, groundwater production has acquired a new importance. In many areas, surface waters are not available in sufficient quantity or quality. Thus, an increasing demand for groundwater has resulted. However, the residence of time of groundwater can be of the order of thousands of years while surface waters is of the order of days. Therefore, substantially more attention is warranted for transport processes and pollution remediation in groundwater than for surface waters. Similarly, pollution remediation problems in groundwater are generally complex. This excellent, timely resource covers the field of groundwater from an engineering perspective, comprehensively addressing the range of subjects related to subsurface hydrology. It provides a practical treatment of the flow of groundwater, the transport of substances, the construction of wells and well fields, the production of groundwater, and site characterization and remediation of groundwater pollution. No other reference specializes in groundwater engineering to such a broad range of subjects. Its use extends to: The engineer designing a well or well field The engineer designing or operating a landfill facility for municipal or hazardous wastes The hydrogeologist investigating a contaminant plume The engineer examining the remediation of a groundwater pollution problem The engineer or lawyer studying the laws and regulations related to groundwater quality The scientist analyzing the mechanics of solute transport The geohydrologist assessing the regional modeling of aquifers The geophysicist determining the characterization of an aquifer The cartographer mapping aquifer characteristics The practitioner planning a monitoring network
Book Synopsis Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition by : Neven Kresic
Download or read book Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition written by Neven Kresic and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-10-26 with total page 836 pages. With more than 40 real-world examples, the book is a source for clear, easy-to-understand, and step-by-step quantitative groundwater evaluation and contaminant fate and transport analysis, from basic laboratory determination to complex analytical calculations and computer modeling. It provides more than 400 drawings, graphs, and photographs, and a variety of useful tables of all key groundwater parameters, as well as lucid, straightforward answers to common hydrogeological problems. Reflecting nearly ten years of new scholarship since the publication of the bestselling first edition, this second edition is wider in focus with added and updated examples, figures, and problems, yet still provides information in the author's trademark, user-friendly style. No other book offers such carefully selected examples and clear, elegantly explained solutions. The inclusion of step-by-step solutions to real problems builds a knowledge base for understanding and solving groundwater issues.
