Several studies have examined the association between TDV and health-related behaviors, and TDV and school outcomes separately. However, only one qualitative study explored the relationship among TDV victimization, health-related behaviors, and school outcomes. There is a need for more studies that examine TDV victimization, health-related behaviors, and school outcomes factors interrelate among high school youth. The purpose of this study is to explore risk factors of TDV, examine the moderating effect of gender or ethnicity on the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes, and explore the mediating effect of health-related behaviors on the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes. Data from the 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was used. The CDC collects data biennially on risk behaviors among high school youth across the U.S. using the YRBS. This study used multiple imputation to handle missing data. Bivariate analyses included correlations, T-tests, Chi-squares, and logistic regression in SPSS to explore the relationships between the variables. Process MACRO 3.3 was used to conduct moderation and mediation analyses. The sample was comprised of 14,765 high school students. Most participants were 16 to 18 years and older (61.9%). 51.4% of the sample were female; 91.4 % of participants reported that they engaged in at least one or more sexual risk behaviors. Seventy percent of the teens were -others (i.e., White, Multi-racial, Asian, Alaskan-Native, American Indian, and Hawaiian), 19.4% were Black/African-American, and 10.6 % were Hispanic. Thirty-seven percent of participants reported difficulty concentrating in school. Participants reported average grades of 3.39 with the majority of students reporting As (28.9%) and Bs (29.7%) and having substance use of 1.12 on a scale of zero (no substance use) to four (higher levels of substance use). Results indicated that being a younger, female, non-Hispanic, and involving in sexual risk behaviors were risk factors for TDV victimization. Second, neither gender nor ethnicity moderated the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes. Finally, physical activity and sleep were mediators of the relationship between TDV victimization and school outcomes. These findings indicate that health-related behaviors are at the center of TDV victimization and academic achievement. School-based TDV prevention programs should include content on the importance of physical activity and sleep in their curricula when addressing healthy relationships. This study calls for multidisciplinary collaborations to address this social problem.

Book excerpt: This study explores factors that are predictive of dating violence victimization among 4,490 adolescents aged 11-17 years with public-use data from Waves I and II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Individual-level factors included self-esteem, depressive symptoms, high-risk alcohol use, and marijuana use. Mesosystem factors included parental monitoring and religiosity. A logistic regression analysis controlled for sex, age, race, and sexual attraction. Results showed that higher levels of depressive symptoms and substance use were associated with an increased likelihood of victimization, whereas self-esteem was not significant. Higher levels of parental monitoring and religiosity were associated with a decreased likelihood of dating violence victimization, suggesting these may have a protective influence. These results have practical implications for violence prevention strategies with policy recommendations put forth to adapt existing healthy relationship education curricula to specific subgroups that may be at an increased risk for victimization.

The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior survey found that 9.4% of students in the United States reported that they had been hit, slapped, or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend or girlfriend. The purpose of this study was to examine teenage risk behaviors and their association with dating violence victimization. Also further investigating if there is a relationship between an outcome of teen dating violence and the number of risk behaviors that a teenager is involved in. Using the 2011 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) a cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between risk behaviors and youth dating violence victimization of 9th through 12th grade high school students. The final multivariate logistic regression model showed alcohol use, smoking, condom use and ethnicity were associated with teenage dating violence victimization. After adjusting for alcohol use, smoking, marijuana use and ethnicity, students who had sexual intercourse during the past three months and they or their partner used a condom during last sexual intercourse [OR=3.010, CI (2.512, 3.606)] as well as those who did not use a condom during last sexual intercourse [OR=5.690, CI (4.672, 6.929)] were significantly more likely to be victims of teenage dating violence than those students who had never had sex. Without adjusting for any other covariates, students who indicated that they had participated in 1 of the risk behaviors (alcohol use, smoking, marijuana use, sex with a condom) at the time of the YRBS were significantly more likely to be victims of teenage dating violence [OR=2.516, CI (1.736, 3.645)] than those students who did not participate in any of the risk behaviors analyzed in this study. The risk behavior of sex without a condom had the strongest association with teenage dating violence victimization throughout the study. The results of this study have important implications for early identification of teens at risk of teenage dating violence (TDV) victimization.

Book excerpt: Adolescent dating violence is commonly experienced by adolescents and is associated with a variety of negative outcomes. Stress and coping and social learning theories suggest that dating violence victimization may predict increased substance use and dating violence perpetration. However, few studies have assessed these relations over time, and existing studies have not assessed physical and psychological dating violence victimization separately nor focused on early adolescent populations. The current study addressed these gaps by examining longitudinal relations between physical and psychological dating violence victimization and substance use and physical and psychological dating violence perpetration among early adolescents. The extent to which gender and class norms for dating violence moderated these relations was also examined. Participants included two cohorts of sixth grade students who reported being involved in a dating relationship at Waves 1 and 2 (N = 2,022; 43% female; 52% African American, 21% Latino/a, 20% European American, and 7% other). Analyses utilized a multilevel approach whereby students were represented at Level 1 and classes (scores for students in the same cohort and school; n = 74) at Level 2. Models tested direct effects from Wave 1 psychological and physical victimization to Wave 2 outcomes and the extent to which gender moderated this effect. Models including psychological and physical perpetration also tested cross-level interactions between Level 1 dating violence victimization and Level 2 class norms for dating violence. Key findings indicated that gender moderated relations between physical and psychological victimization and psychological perpetration. High levels of psychological victimization predicted greater change in psychological perpetration for girls as compared to boys and high levels of physical victimization predicted greater change in psychological perpetration for boys as compared to girls. Additionally, physical and psychological victimization significantly predicted changes in substance use. High levels of physical victimization predicted greater change in substance use, whereas high levels of psychological victimization predicted less change in substance use. These findings highlight the need to address dating violence early in middle school, so as to prevent negative outcomes associated with victimization by a dating partner.

These interconnections have critical implications for conducting research that can produce valid conclusions about the causes and consequences of abuse, maltreatment, and trauma. The accumulated data on co-occurrence also provide strong evidence that prevention and intervention should be organized around the full context of individuals’ experiences, not narrowly defined subtypes of violence. Managing the flood of new research and practice innovations is a challenge, however. New means of communication and integration are needed to meet this challenge, and the Web of Violence is intended to contribute to this process by serving as a concise overview of the conceptual and empirical work that form a basis for understanding the interconnections across forms of violence throughout the lifespan. It also offers ideas and directions for prevention, intervention, and public policy. A number of initiatives are emerging to integrate the findings on co-occurrence into research and action. The American Psychological Association established a new journal, Psychology of Violence, which is a forum for research on all types of violence. Sherry Hamby is the founding editor and John Grych is associate editor and co-editor of a special issue on the co-occurrence of violence in 2012. Dr. Hamby also is a co-investigator of the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV), which has drawn attention to polyvictimization. Polyvictimization is a focus of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Defending Childhood Initiative and has recently been featured in calls for grant proposals by the Office of Victims of Crime and National Institutes for Justice.

The most common source of formal help was from school personnel (9.2%), followed by social services (4.7%). The most common sources of informal help were friends (42.9%). When examining cultural factors, being more Latino oriented was associated with decreased odds of experiencing any dating violence. In relation to help-seeking, a one-unit increase in familism was associated with higher odds of formal help-seeking than not seeking formal help. While depression, anxiety, and hostility were associated with various forms of dating violence victimization, they were best explained by the count of all victimizations. In regards to school outcomes, experiencing physical dating violence was related to receiving special education services. Experiencing victimization also generally increased the odds of engaging in delinquency. Social support was related to decreased odds all types of dating violence. In some cases, it also moderated the effects of dating violence on certain outcomes (e.g., hostility). Overall, results suggest Latino youth have significant comorbid victimization and are most likely to seek informal help from friends rather than formal outlets. However, when formal resources are used, schools appear to be the primary point of contact. The use of informal help-seeking as a gateway to formal help is recommended. In addition, the role of Latino orientation and social support appears to be important in diminishing victimization risk and the negative impact of interpersonal violence among these youth.
