Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These 21 national case studies of internal migration were written especially for this unusual and useful volume. . . . The resulting blend of the general and the particular, especially when viewed across the 21 countries, will be useful to a wide range of basic and applied social scientists. Choice Social and economic change within countries can often be traced through the movement of population at the national level. The abandonment or return to inner cities, the volume of movement within and between rural and urban areas, the movement of the elderly, all of these factors and others combine to give us an important picture of national change. The International Handbook on Internal Migration is a compilation of 21 case studies, each focusing on a different country, each written specifically for this book by an expert in the field. Extensively illustrated with tables and figures, the book will serve as an invaluable reference text. It will also be of great interest to students of the social sciences, especially sociology, economics, and geography.
Book Synopsis Rural-urban Migration in Developing Countries by : Somik V. Lall
Download or read book Rural-urban Migration in Developing Countries written by Somik V. Lall and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The migration of labor from rural to urban areas is an important part of the urbanization process in developing countries. Even though it has been the focus of abundant research over the past five decades, some key policy questions have not found clear answers yet. To what extent is internal migration a desirable phenomenon and under what circumstances? Should governments intervene and, if so, with what types of interventions? What should be their policy objectives? To shed light on these important issues, the authors survey the existing theoretical models and their conflicting policy implications and discuss the policies that may be justified based on recent relevant empirical studies. A key limitation is that much of the empirical literature does not provide structural tests of the theoretical models, but only provides partial findings that can support or invalidate intuitions and in that sense, support or invalidate the policy implications of the models. The authors' broad assessment of the literature is that migration can be beneficial or at least be turned into a beneficial phenomenon so that in general migration restrictions are not desirable. They also identify some data issues and research topics which merit further investigation. "--World Bank web site.

Book Synopsis Seeking Opportunities by : Lena Giesbert
Download or read book Seeking Opportunities written by Lena Giesbert and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration and remittances are widely seen as major components of diversification strategies aimed at coping with risky environments in developing countries. The debate in the literature mainly concentrates on effects of and access to the strategy of migration. Against this background, the paper investigates patterns, determinants and the impact of internal migration on households based on data from a densely populated rural area in Western Kenya. The motivation behind migration is largely economic in kind. Accordingly, remittances account for a substantial share of household incomes. Results derived from a probit model estimation indicate that the likelihood of migration is independent from the wealth position of households. Instead, demographic household factors, education-related variables and migrant networks are of central importance. Migration and remittances are obviously more easily accessible than other opportunities of income diversification beyond farming for households across all levels of wealth, including the poorest households.

Book Synopsis Undercurrents of Ethnic Conflict in Kenya by : John Oucho
Download or read book Undercurrents of Ethnic Conflict in Kenya written by John Oucho and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the ethnic conflict that engulfed Kenya’s Rift Valley Province at the turn of the nineties when multi-party democratic politics were being reintroduced in the country. Its central thesis is that ethnic conflict in the country then was a function of several issues, among them ethnocentrism, politics, the land question and criminal behaviour in certain circles. Both its determinants and consequences are demographic, economic, political and socio-cultural, implying the risks involved in oversimplifying issues.
