Book excerpt: This paper investigates the determinants of Ethiopian banks performance considering bank specific and external variables on selected banks' profitability for the 1990-2012 periods. The empirical investigation uses the accounting measure Return on Assets (ROA) to represent Banks' performance. The study finds that bank specific variables by large explain the variation in profitability. High performance is related to the ability of banks to control their credit risk, diversify their income sources by incorporating non-traditional banking services and control their overhead expenses. In addition, the paper finds that bank's capital and liquidity status are not significant to affect the performance of banks. On the other hand, the paper finds that bank size and macro-economic variables such real GDP growth rates have no significant impact on banks' profitability. However, the inflation rate is determined to be significant driver to the performance of the Ethiopian commercial banks

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 3.5, , language: English, abstract: The general objective of this study is to investigate the impact of income source diversification on financial performance of commercial banks in Ethiopia. Commercial banks in Ethiopia are currently facing competition from non-bank institutions entry into the activities which was in the past only role of banks. Therefore, banks started searching new income sources rather than focusing only traditional inter-mediation income generating activities. Thus, this study was to examine the impact of income sources diversification on bank performance in case of some selected commercial banks in Ethiopia by using panel data over the period 2010-2015. The study used secondary data collected mainly from each sampled banks annual report financial statements. Since the data is secondary in nature, quantitative approach was adopted. This data was analyzed by using STATA version 12 and Microsoft Excel. Fixed effect model was used, since this model is preferred than the random effect model based on the hausman specification test. Return on asset (ROA) was used as dependent variable while income diversification (Div) as independent variable with control variables such as bank size (BS) in terms of total assets, equity/ assets ratio (EAR), loan/asset ratio (LAR) and expense/income ratio (Exp). The findings of the study show that the level of diversification has a positive impact on financial performance of Ethiopian commercial banks. In addition, the study also revealed that EAR, LAR and BS had positive impact on financial performance while Exp had negative impact. The results of the study are important for bankers to understand how income diversification affects the performance of banks. Therefore, the study recommended that banks should diversify their sources of income into interest and non-interest as well as reduce operating expense in effective way, so as to enhance their performance (ROA).

Book excerpt: Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: Very Good, Mekelle University, language: English, abstract: The objective of the study was to compare the financial performance of commercial Banks by using their average ratio in terms of profitability, liquidity, efficiency, and solvency. In this study by using excel analyzed information was presented by statistical measures like graphs and tables. Both the trend and comparative financial performance analysis approaches were used. Five years audited financial reports from 2005 to 2009 of the commercial banks were taken for comparison purpose. Those commercial banks taken for comparison were Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Dashen Bank Share Company, Bank of Abyssinia, United Bank, Wegagen Bank, and Nib International Bank. Year of establishment, amount of capital reserve, and number of branches are taken as a criterion for selecting these commercial banks for analysis purpose. In addition to data gathered from secondary sources, unstructured interview was conducted on problem and prospects related to the financial performance of commercial banks and the responses were presented. The respective ratios of each bank are compared with the average ratios of the six commercial banks taken for the study. Then trend analyses of six commercial banks taken in this study are presented by using the above ratios. In both the financial performance analysis approaches i.e., the trend and comparative analysis, Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) showed good performance in financial ratios of Profitability, Liquidity, and Solvency ratio, but Bank of Abyssinia(BOA) has showed weak performance in all above explained financial ratios. From this, it is concluded that CBE was profitable and functionally efficient and BOA is less profitable and the earning capacity of the bank is weak. Therefore, in order to improve profitability the management of BOA must increase management efficiency by reducing administrative expenses to the best possible level, efficiently control costs and utilize customers deposit, dispose of the assets which are not contributing for the profitability of the banks and work to maximize the overall profitability of the bank through investing in profitable avenue.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, language: English, abstract: The main objective of the paper is to analyze the impact of bank specific and macro-economic factors on the profitability of selected Ethiopian private commercial banks over the period of 2005 to 2014. To meet the objective, both descriptive and random effect panel econometrics method of data analysis has been employed. The study uses both return on asset (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) as a measurement for banks profitability. Private Banks profit after tax gets increasing year after year and their ROA is found to be three percent on average. The deposit share of private commercial banks reached above 30 percent in 2014, while it was only 10 percent in 2000. The panel econometrics result shows that, the variable bank size and GDP growth rate has a positive and significant impact on private commercial banks ROA and ROE. While, interest rate spread has a negative and significant impact. The variable Loan to deposit ratio has negative and significant impact on banks ROA while, it has no effect on their ROE. Inflation also an important variable in explaining ROA at 10% significant level but, it has no effect on ROE. The other important variable in explaining ROE is loan concentration index it has positive and significant impact on banks ROE. But, it does not significantly explain ROA. As a recommendation the significant and positive impact of Bank size can be taken as a good signal for commercial banks to merge and to have scale advantage. The significant impact of macro-economic variables in explaining banks profit is an indicator to designed policies that promote sustainable output growth and controlling inflation to have stable banking sector.

Book excerpt: March 1998 Differences in interest margins reflect differences in bank characteristics, macroeconomic conditions, existing financial structure and taxation, regulation, and other institutional factors. Using bank data for 80 countries for 1988-95, Demirgüç-Kunt and Huizinga show that differences in interest margins and bank profitability reflect various determinants: * Bank characteristics. * Macroeconomic conditions. * Explicit and implicit bank taxes. * Regulation of deposit insurance. * General financial structure. * Several underlying legal and institutional indicators. Controlling for differences in bank activity, leverage, and the macroeconomic environment, they find (among other things) that: * Banks in countries with a more competitive banking sector-where banking assets constitute a larger share of GDP-have smaller margins and are less profitable. The bank concentration ratio also affects bank profitability; larger banks tend to have higher margins. * Well-capitalized banks have higher net interest margins and are more profitable. This is consistent with the fact that banks with higher capital ratios have a lower cost of funding because of lower prospective bankruptcy costs. * Differences in a bank's activity mix affect spread and profitability. Banks with relatively high noninterest-earning assets are less profitable. Also, banks that rely largely on deposits for their funding are less profitable, as deposits require more branching and other expenses. Similarly, variations in overhead and other operating costs are reflected in variations in bank interest margins, as banks pass their operating costs (including the corporate tax burden) on to their depositors and lenders. * In developing countries foreign banks have greater margins and profits than domestic banks. In industrial countries, the opposite is true. * Macroeconomic factors also explain variation in interest margins. Inflation is associated with higher realized interest margins and greater profitability. Inflation brings higher costs-more transactions and generally more extensive branch networks-and also more income from bank float. Bank income increases more with inflation than bank costs do. * There is evidence that the corporate tax burden is fully passed on to bank customers in poor and rich countries alike. * Legal and institutional differences matter. Indicators of better contract enforcement, efficiency in the legal system, and lack of corruption are associated with lower realized interest margins and lower profitability. This paper-a product of the Development Research Group-is part of a larger effort in the group to study bank efficiency.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, , language: English, abstract: The main purpose of this study was to examine the determinants of loan default and its effects on financial performance of commercial banks in Ghana by using Fidelity Bank Limited as a case study. The study employed quantitative and qualitative research techniques as the research design. In achieving the research objectives primary and secondary data was used. The primary data was collected through a well structured questionnaire. Simple random technique was used to select 120 loan clients and a purposive sampling was used to select a credit staff. The data was collected from four branches of Fidelity Bank in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. It was realized that the delays in loan approval, poor management, poor credit appraisal and diversion of loans are the main determinants of loan default in Fidelity bank. The study also found that SME clients (49.5%) defaults more than agric, personal and salary loan clients. The major cause of loan default according to the findings of this study was decrease in demand of goods and service (16.1%) sold by the loan clients. Again, it was realized that loan default has a negative impact on profitability. It is recommended that the following measures should be implemented to reduce the rate of loan default; good credit structuring, consistent monitoring, sound credit risk policies and standards, quality analysis, well trained staff, good corporate governance system, independent credit assessment, rescheduling and provision of additional funds.

The creation of the European Single Market has of necessity initiated deregulation, whilst the increase in telephone and internet banking has impacted on economies of scale. Financial services organisations are now able to compete in previously uncharted territory, to considerable effect. Taking the reader on a journey of discovery through the economic theory behind the practice and the consequences that follow, the authors have created a fascinating insight into the current state of European retail banking. The authors use their extensive research to display the rationale behind the increasing trend towards consolidation and efficiency. Well argued and well researched, this is a must read for all people with an interest in the European Banking market, from investors to bankers and students alike. "This outstanding contribution has everything a banking practitioner, academic or regulator would need to know about European banking, complete from theory to practice to data to background references. Book excerpt: Banks’ liquidity holdings are comfortably above legal or prudential requirements in most Central American countries. While good for financial stability, high systemic liquidity may nonetheless hinder monetary policy transmission and financial markets development. Using a panel of about 100 commercial banks from the region, we find that the demand for precautionary liquidity buffers is associated with measures of bank size, profitability, capitalization, and financial development. Deposit dollarization is also associated with higher liquidity, reinforcing the monetary policy and market development challenges in highly dollarized economies. Improvements in supervision and measures to promote dedollarization, including developing local currency capital markets, would help enhance financial systems’ efficiency and promote intermediation in the region.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, , language: English, abstract: The main objective of this study was to examine the determinants of non-performing loans in the case of the Development Bank of Ethiopia, Bahir Dar District. Descriptive and explanatory research designs were employed. The study uses both a quantitative and qualitative research approach. The study also uses both primary and secondary data sources. The primary source was collected from all 125 employees using questionnaires and interviews conducted with concerned managerial staffs of the district. The secondary source was gathered from DBE manuals, policy and procedure of the bank, NBE directives, bank's T-24 system, loan positions and provisions documents. The data was analyzed and interpreted by using descriptive and inferential statistics with the help of SPSS version 22.0 and qualitative analysis like interview and document analysis. The correlation between independent variables (bank specific and External factor) and dependent variables (nonperforming loan) were tested by using person correlation and the casual relation was analyzed by using linear multiple regression analysis. The finding of the study indicate that credit assessment, project monitoring, credit appraisal, bank top management, political and social instability, availability of infrastructure, collateral strength and market factor are significant factors for occurrence of non-performing loans. However, credit term and condition and lending interest rate are insignificant factor for the occurrence of non-performing loans. Finally, the study recommends the district should perform proper selection of customers and make appropriate due diligence based on KYC assessments, proper monitoring and follow up as per the schedule, make accurate credit appraisal, granting loans via strong collateral coverage, sound decision made by top management based on policy and procedure of the bank, improve capacity of credit performer by providing relevant training.

Book excerpt: TQM has become a competitive strategy for organizations and has been widely implemented throughout the world. Over the previous three decades, there has been a dramatic growth globally in the implementation of total quality management (TQM) in many organizations with the aim of improving the quality of their products and services, and meeting customers' needs. Although the literature in the field relates the success of many organizations in the implementation of TQM, it also refers to the fact that there have been some failures or shortcomings and barriers to the implementation of TQM. These failures or barriers to adoption and implementation are due to lack of top management commitment or weak understanding of total quality management, and encompass organizational cultural factors. A firm's performance is a function of how well managers use quality management practices to improve the quality of products and services. In today's global environment, organizations are constantly looking for ways to expand and improve their businesses in terms of quality to enhance performance. Quality management practices have been used by banking firms in Ethiopia to improve on performance. However, customers are still complaining that the quality of service products has been compromised. The purpose of this study was to establish the effect of total quality management practices on organizational performance of commercial banks in Ethiopia. The specific objectives of the study were: to identify the extent that the commercial banks in Ethiopia have adopted TQM principles; to explore the TQM elements that are significantly associated with the Organizational Performance (OP) in the Ethiopian Commercial Banks; and to investigate the effect of each TQM elements on the organizational performance of the commercial banks. The study used both descriptive and explanatory research design. The target population comprised all 17 commercial banks and a sample size of 330 branch manager respondents from Addis Ababa, Adama and Hawassa cities. The study adopted simple random proportional sampling technique. The study used primary data which was collected using self-administered questionnaires. Validity of the instruments was ensured through face, and content validity and reliability was tested using Cronbach's Alpha with a coefficient of 0.7, which was considered acceptable. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize data while inferential statistics, specifically Multiple Linear Regression, was used to test the hypotheses. The analysis used SPSS version 22 to aid in data analysis. The results were presented using tables and figures. Out of variety of TQM factors affecting OP, five were identified and selected through pilot results for TQM implementation in the Ethiopian banks. These factors were ranked as: top management commitment, education and training, customer focus, employees' involvement, and people management according to their level of significance of effect over the organizational performance on the basis of the analysis made. The study recommended that the management should be committed to quality by providing strategic direction with respect to quality management practices, which should be aligned to the firms' objectives. Policy makers should create a quality framework that is geared towards improving performance and ensure it is adhered to by all stakeholders in the commercial firms in Ethiopia. Finally, the study recommends that similar research be done in other sectors like manufacturing industries.

Financial development-as captured by size, depth, efficiency, and reach of financial systems-varies sharply around the world, with large differences among countries at similar levels of income. This paper argues that governments play an important role in building effective financial systems and discusses different policy options to make finance work for development."--World Bank web site.

To manage this risk, banks can accumulate a buffer of liquid assets, or strengthen transparency to communicate solvency. While a liquidity buffer provides complete insurance against small shocks, transparency covers also large shocks but imperfectly. Due to leverage, an unregulated bank may choose insufficient liquidity buffers and transparency. The regulatory response is constained: while liquidity buffers can be imposed, transparency is not verifiable. Moreover, liquidity requirements can compromise banks' transparency choices, and increase refinancing risk. To be effective, liquidity requirements should be complemented by measures that increase bank incentives to adopt transparency.
