Book excerpt: Excerpt from Designing and Detailing of Simple Steel Structures The object sought in this book is to collect from the many larger and more exhaustive works on structural steel design, those parts which are applicable to simple structures, and which can be taken up in technical schools in the limited time usually allotted to the subject; and at the same time, to show by general cases and specific examples how the simple laws of statics may be applied to the details of steel structures with the object of producing details which are in accord with the stresses they have to transmit. It is presumed that the student has already finished a course in stresses, and little time is given here to the methods of caleu lating the primary stresses in structures. An effort has been made to make the nomenclature, through out, conform to that used in Stresses in Structures, by Prof. A. H. Heller, and a table is given so that the meaning of any letter or character in any formula can be at once determined by reference to it. In some cases where reference is made to another book, and a formula is taken bodily from it, the nomenclature of the original author is retained and the meaning of the letters given in connection. Cross references to other articles in this book are indicated by figures in parentheses giving the article number, thus (14) References to other works on the subject are given in foot notes. The author wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to Mr. C. C. Heller for the privilege of using various manuscript notes and sketches, left at his death by Prof. A. H. Heller, which have formed the basis of many of the articles. In this book. It is hoped that by the illustrations given and the methods employed, the reasons will be made apparent for many of the details commonly employed in structural work, and which are many times put in by rule of thumb and too Often without due consideration of the stresses they have to carry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design and Construction of Metallic Bridges This book is based upon the ninth edition of The Stresses in Bridge and Roof Trusses, Arched Ribs, and Suspension Bridges, by one of the Authors of this volume. T hat work, however, has been so thoroughly rewritten and such a large amount of new matter has been introduced that a new title has been' adopted. It has been the intention of the Authors to prepare a comprehensive book covering all types of trusses used to a material extent in American bridge practice, or at least all trusses forming the basis of that practice. In con formity With this plan, the most advanced methods of stress computations, as well as those that are older, have been employed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Detailed Study of Specifications for Steel Bridges: Thesis The science of bridge design has not yet reached that ideal stage where a purely theoretical treatment of all divisions of the subject can be made. Huch must still be left to the individual iudgement of engineers, and just so long as assumptions nust be made will there be diferences in opinion. The writer has taken as an example of recent specifications those published by the American Railway Engineering and haintenance of Way Association for 1006, and, selecting certain of the clauses upon which there is some diversltg of opinion, has endeavored to deduce from dis eussions published in the proceedings of engineering societies and in the engineering press for the last twenty years or more and from the theories given in textbooks the laws that obtain, in so far as they have been established. The conclusions are stated at the close of each discussion in the form of a ne. Clause em bodysng any changes that seem to be juftifiable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Bridge-Construction: Being a d104-Book on the Design and Construction of Bridges in Iron and Steel, for the Use of Students, Draughtsmen, and Engineers Within the last few years, the art of bridge-construction has undergone many important changes. Engineers have been called upon to construct bridges of unprecedented magnitude, whose design and execution have presented a number of new problems, or have invested old ones with an importance which they did not before possess. At the same time, new points of interest have arisen in connection with the introduction of steel, the adoption of new forms of construction, and the employment of new methods of research; while the constant accumulation of experimental facts has, in the meantime, added largely to our stock of practical knowledge in regard to such subjects as the strength of materials and the effects of wind-pressure. The object of this book is to describe the modem practice of Bridge-construction, and to set forth in the simplest language the mechanical principles and experimental facts on which it is based. The design and arrangement of the work have been dictated by a desire to render it as useful as possible, not only to engineers or draughtsmen who may be engaged in the work of bridge-calculations and bridge-construction, but also to students. With this object, the earlier chapters of the work are devoted to a simple demonstration of those mechanical principles which must of necessity form the beginning of any study of the subject; and which are more fully developed and applied in later portions of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Typical Steel Railway Bridges: An Elementary Course of Engineering Students and Draftsmen At the outset, a general specification has been given govern ing the loads, unit stresses, and such other details as require the attention of the designer. This is followed by tables for the permissible unit stresses in columns, and for the rivet values used in the designs. After which, instructions have been given for constructing the moment-diagram which is employed in computing the bending moments and shears for wheel-loads. The author has found the moment-diagram to be the most satis factory method of dealing with wheel-loads, as it affords a rapid and reliable solution, and significant errors are less likely to occur with its use than with that of any form of moment table. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges are great symbols of mankind’s conquest of space. They are a monument to his vision and determination, but these alone are not enough. An appreciation of the mathematical theories underlying bridge design is essential to resist the physical forces of nature and gravity. The object of this book is to explain firstly the nature of the problems associated with the building of bridges with steel as the basic material, and then the theories that are available to tackle them. The book covers: a technological history of the different types of iron and steel bridges the basic properties of steel loads on bridges from either natural or traffic-induced forces the process and aims of design based on limit state and statistical probability concepts buckling behaviour of various components and large-deflection behaviour of components with initial imperfections detailed guidance on the design of plate and box girder bridges together with some design examples The Second Edition includes a completely new chapter on the history and design of cable-stayed bridges, the various types of cable used for them and their method of construction, and it addresses many of the changes introduced in the latest version of the British Standard Design Code for steel bridges, BS 5400: Part 3:2000.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bridge and Structural Design Both analytical and graphical methods have been employed for obtaining stresses, and the one which seemed best suited for any particular subject has been adopted. But few are given, as it was thought unnecessary to repeat information given in any of the rolling mills' hand-books. Although the hook is intended principally for students and draughts men, there are parts which may be of interest to practicing bridge designers. Particular attention is here drawn to Art. I7, which treats of the design of a knee - braced mill building; and to Art. 19, which discusses the rivet spacing and web splices in plate girders, in which one-eighth of the web plate is counted on as flange area.
