Book excerpt: Presented is the development and initial testing of a two dimensional bed load transport model that can reasonably predict changes in not just bed elevations but bed composition composed of materials into the gravel range. The model is capable of computing a new bed composition and topography for a fixed flow rate given the initial channel geometry, bed composition, and topography. Sediment continuity is determined using mass conservation in a sediment element consisting of a mixing layer of constant thickness and a sublayer. A two-dimensional shallow water flow model is used to determine water velocities and depths. Sediment transport rates are determined using the surface-based formulation for mixed sand and gravel of Wilcock and Crowe developed for mixed sand and gravel. The Chezy coefficient for the channel is determined as a calibration parameter to sediment transport. An adjustment factor is used as a correction to the estimated bed shear stresses to match observed and predicted sediment transport. Initial tests of the model (excluding cross stream variation) using the results of flume experiments conducted at Humboldt State University showed good agreement between observed and predicted changes in bed elevations, the distribution of transported material, and the total amount of material transported. Further testing of the model, including cross stream variation, was performed using the results of two sediment transport experiments. The model reproduced the evolution of the bed for each of the experiments as well as the sediment transport rates and distribution of median diameters. Prediction errors of the percent of individual size classes were below 25% and only in a few cases; most errors were within 10%. All sediment transport rates are predicted within an order of magnitude.

Efficient means and methods for sediment control, however, are not simple, and in some cases have not been developed to a high degree. A look at the overall picture of sediment control shows two distinct approaches: (1) Control of erosion, and (2) interception of errant soil once erosion has taken place. Obviously erosion control (mainly by vegetation) is the preferred approach. However, during periods of active construction and before vegetation is established, erosion is inevitable. The problem is then to intercept the waterborne sediment produced and confine it to the construction area. According to William M. Smith, County of Fairfax Public Works, flows below 15 CFS based on a 10-year rain can be controlled by berms, and straw and brush dams, which are less expensive than silt ponds or basins. On the other hand flows in excess of 400 CFS (again based on the 10-year storm) are too large for the practical design of silt basins, so efforts should be concentrated on protecting the stream from construction by placing traps, berms, and barriers along the stream banks, So, in essence, use of the siltation pond or basin is limited to situations where high flows will range from perhaps somewhat less than 15 CFS to a maximum of 400 CFS, based on the 10-year storm event. Finally, this short report will consider only the volume aspects, or trap efficiency, of the ponds and not the design of the dam, riser pipe, spillway, etc.

Book excerpt: A two-dimensional horizontal finite element numerical model (RMA-2) was applied to a 15 mile (24 km) river channel-floodplain reach in West Germany. Previous applications of such models have been restricted to much smaller scales. The results indicate that finite element schemes may successfully estimate river stage in large scale floodplain applications. Computed stage hydrographs compared well with observed data using loss coefficients within expected ranges. Two-dimensional flow models have been applied to certain classes of river channel problems. Applications have included detailed analyses of flow patterns near structures such as bridges and floodplains. In all these problems the scale of interest has been small, e.g. reaches of river a few river widths long. Many estuary studies have been done that were of large scale; some of these utilized a hybrid (numerical plus physical) modeling technique. In a review of the application of finite element methods to river channels, Samuels reported that the river channel was resolved separately from the floodplain in only two studies. Missing in previous work is attention to large scale floodplain modeling. The work reported in this paper focuses on the feasibility and accuracy of applying a two-dimensional flow model to a large floodplain. Traditional floodplain studies have used semi-empirical flow routing with steady, one-dimensional computation of water surface elevations to define inundated areas. Keywords: Army Corps of Engines. By 1994 it was time to recognise the extensive research being carried on in Europe by holding the workshop in that region. Intercoh '94 (the 4th Nearshore and Estuarine Cohesive Sediment Transport Conference) drew together about 100 of the world's leading researchers in the field.
