Book excerpt: The impact of performance appraisal system design elements (e.g. type of appraisal form, timing of form completion and whether or not the subordinate compiles information for the review) on perceptions of work planning during the performance appraisal session, subordinate ownership of the session and performance improvement is examined in a sample of supervisor subordinate pairs. The results indicate that timing of form completion and whether or not the subordinate compiles information but not type of form used effect perception of work planning, ownership and performance improvement. Reasons and implications are discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pay for performance" has become a buzzword for the 1990s, as U.S. organizations seek ways to boost employee productivity. The new emphasis on performance appraisal and merit pay calls for a thorough examination of their effectiveness. Pay for Performance is the best resource to date on the issues of whether these concepts work and how they can be applied most effectively in the workplace. This important book looks at performance appraisal and pay practices in the private sector and describes whetherâ€"and howâ€"private industry experience is relevant to federal pay reform. It focuses on the needs of the federal government, exploring how the federal pay system evolved; available evidence on federal employee attitudes toward their work, their pay, and their reputation with the public; and the complicating and pervasive factor of politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is vital that the performance appraisal system in every organisation be aligned with organisational strategy and have a developmental focus. The outcomes would be in terms of a committed and motivated workforce and employees who would be focused on the vision and mission of the organisation. Thus, a Performance Appraisal System in the organisation of today has to evolve from a mere evaluative control-oriented process into a developmental and transformational one. This book presents a research study that attempts to add to the empirical research base in India on the complex area of performance appraisal. It compares the performance appraisal systems of two organisations in the aluminium industry in Orissa, India, belonging to two different sectors of the economy, the private sector and the public sector. The study has investigated the perceptions of the employees of the two organisations on several dimensions of performance appraisal across organisational and managerial levels. The findings have implications for all organisations that would want to understand the complexities of performance appraisal systems.

For human resource professionals and managers, the authors show how to define performance, who should measure it, who should give and receive feedback, and how often appraisals should be made. They examine and evaluate the common approaches to appraisals--those oriented to the performer, the behavior, the result, or the situation--and shows how they can be integrated into an effective system.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third of three volumes, this report summarizes the findings of, first, a review and analysis of published literature on performance appraisal in general and particularly on the use of appraisals in public education systems, and, second, a series of field-site investigations of performance appraisal systems in action. The field site studies of performance appraisal in action at 10 professional service organizations in Ontario and 7 public school systems in the United States mirror many of the results from the literature review. Three general conclusions are derived from the results of this study: (1) different approaches and priorities in appraisal systems are used for relevance to the local situation of a particular organization or school jurisdiction; (2) appraisal systems can be expected to go through stages of evolution as all participants have to go through a learning curve of experience with a system, and therefore, no one design can be expected to be correct at the outset or remain in force indefinitely; (3) an appraisal system developed jointly between supervisors and subordinates has a better chance of incorporating diverse but relevant points of view than a system developed centrally by top management alone. The greater the opportunity for participation by parties affected by a decision, the greater the potential quality and acceptability of the decisions. Because no system of appraisals is workable unless it is acceptable and legitimate to all staff, an appraisal system should be centrally developed with universal standards that are adaptable to change based on local operational specifics and requisites. The sample consisted of 178 respondents that completed a newly developed questionnaire, aimed at obtaining the respondents input in the performance appraisal system's design. The results of the managerial group were compared to the non-managerial group. Some significant differences were obtained regarding the design of the performance appraisal system. The results and implications are discussed.
