Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue Testing and Analysis of Results discusses fundamental concepts of fatigue testing and results analysis. The book begins with a description of the symbols and nomenclature selected for the present book, mainly those proposed by the ASTM Committee E-9 on Fatigue. Fatigue testing methods are then discussed including routine tests, short-life and long-life tests, cumulative-damage tests, and abbreviated and accelerated tests. Separate chapters cover fatigue testing machines and equipment; instruments and measuring devices; and test pieces used in fatigue testing. The factors affecting test results are considered, including material, types of stressing, test machine, environment, and testing technique. The final two chapters cover the planning of test programs and the presentation of results. Test program planning involves the statistical design of a test series; specification and sampling of test pieces; and choice of test pieces, testing machines, and test conditions. The chief purpose of most fatigue tests is the experimental determination of the relation between the endurance and the magnitude of the applied stress range for the material and the specimen under consideration, and final results can be condensed into a table, graph, or analytical expression.

Book excerpt: Modern analytical theories of fatigue coupled with a knowledge of processing effects on metals make up the sound basis for designing machine parts that are free from unexpected failure. Fatigue Design: Life Expectancy of Machine Parts provides the information and the tools needed for optimal design. It highlights practical approaches for effectively solving fatigue problems, including minimizing the risk of hidden perils that may arise during production processes or from exposure to the environment. The material is presented with a dual approach: the excellent coverage of the theoretical aspects is accented by practical illustrations of the behavior of machine parts. The theoretical approach combines the fundamentals of solid mechanics, fatigue analysis, and crack propagation. The chapters covering fatigue theories are given special emphasis, starting with the basics and progressing to complicated multiaxial nonlinear problems. The practical approach concentrates on the effects of surface processing on fatigue life and it illustrates many faceted fatigue problems taken from case studies. The solutions demonstrate the authors' detailed analyses of failure and are intended to be used as preventive guidelines. The cases are a unique feature of the book. The numerical method used is the finite element method, and is presented with clear explanations and illustrations. Fatigue Design: Life Expectancy of Machine Parts is an extremely valuable tool for both practicing design engineers and engineering students.

Book excerpt: The upper head of the multiplying fixture of the SF-1U fatigue testing machine, and the grips for holding the specimen were redesigned and rebuilt. Specimens can now be loaded for testing without the turning movements which introduced torque and/or bending moments into the specimen. Redesign of the specimen gripping arrangement has greatly reduced the time and labor necessary to load specimens for testing. Limited testing with steel specimens in the range of medium to high c clic tension-compression loads has shown improved fatigue life with results that compare favorably with results obtained by other means of testing. Additional work to assure true alignment of the multiplying fixture and the gripping arrangement, and further testing with low cyclic loads such as those employed in testing Al and Mg is recommended. Book excerpt: Applied Optimal Design Mechanical and Structural Systems Edward J. Haug & Jasbir S. Arora This computer-aided design text presents and illustrates techniques for optimizing the design of a wide variety of mechanical and structural systems through the use of nonlinear programming and optimal control theory. A state space method is adopted that incorporates the system model as an integral part of the design formulations. Step-by-step numerical algorithms are given for each method of optimal design. Basic properties of the equations of mechanics are used to carry out design sensitivity analysis and optimization, with numerical efficiency and generality that is in most cases an order of magnitude faster in digital computation than applications using standard nonlinear programming methods. 1979 Optimum Design of Mechanical Elements, 2nd Ed. Ray C. Johnson The two basic optimization techniques, the method of optimal design (MOD) and automated optimal design (AOD), discussed in this valuable work can be applied to the optimal design of mechanical elements commonly found in machinery, mechanisms, mechanical assemblages, products, and structures. The many illustrative examples used to explicate these techniques include such topics as tensile bars, torsion bars, shafts in combined loading, helical and spur gears, helical springs, and hydrostatic journal bearings. The author covers curve fitting, equation simplification, material properties, and failure theories, as well as the effects of manufacturing errors on product performance and the need for a factor of safety in design work. 1980 Globally Optimal Design Douglass J. Wilde Here are new analytic optimization procedures effective where numerical methods either take too long or do not provide correct answers. This book uses mathematics sparingly, proving only results generated by examples. It defines simple design methods guaranteed to give the global, rather than any local, optimum through computations easy enough to be done on a manual calculator. The author confronts realistic situations: determining critical constraints; dealing with negative contributions; handling power function; tackling logarithmic and exponential nonlinearities; coping with standard sizes and indivisible components; and resolving conflicting objectives and logical restrictions. Special mathematical structures are exposed and used to solve design problems. 1978

Book excerpt: Plastics are now increasingly used as engineering materials; consequently, there is a need to establish the propensity of the material to fail under fatigue loading. However, in general terms, conventional methods for establishing the fatigue life of a plastic component cannot be used, and alternative ways have to be found. Multiaxial and "in service" load simulation is suggested as a method of tackling this problem. The possibilities of this alternative technique are outlined, and, because of the peculiar and stringent demands on the design of the loading apparatus, this is discussed in detail. The evolution of this apparatus has led to the development of techniques that have solved many of the difficulties found in the application of a multiaxial load and, in addition, offer marked improvements in the field of testing plastics in general.

Book excerpt: A one-dimensional analysis of the results of the parallel-jet mixing encountered in the testing of engines in supersonic wind tunnels is reported. Equations were derived for determining the total pressure and Mach number behind the tunnel terminal shock. The method represents a simple procedure for determining these quantities while a tunnel is still in the design stage. A specific example of the method is included.
