Book Synopsis Ships from the Depths by : Fredrik Søreide
Download or read book Ships from the Depths written by Fredrik Søreide and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deepwater archaeology uncovers secrets from the ancient maritime past . . . Thousands of shipwrecks and archaeological sites lie undiscovered in deep water, potentially holding important clues to our maritime past. Scientists have explored only a small percentage of the oceans' depths, as 98 percent of the seabed lies well beyond the reach of conventional diving. Ships from the Depths surveys the dramatic advances in technology over the last few years that have made it possible for scientists to locate, study, and catalogue archaeological sites in waters previously inaccessible to humans. Researcher and explorer Fredrik Søreide presents the development of deepwater archaeology since 1971, when Willard Bascom designed his Alcoa Seaprobe to locate and raise deepwater wrecks in the Mediterranean. Accompanied by descriptions and color photographs of deepwater projects and equipment, this book considers not only techniques that have been developed for location and observation of sites but also removal and excavation methods distinctive to these unique locations, far beyond the reach of scuba gear. Søreide provides an introduction to and survey of the history, development, and potential of this exciting branch of nautical archaeology. Scholars and field archaeologists will appreciate this handy compendium of the current state of the discipline and technology, and general readers will relish this comprehensive look at the challenges and opportunities associated with locating and studying historical and ancient shipwrecks in some of the world’s deepest waters.
Book Synopsis Into the Depths by : Mary Margaret Funk
Download or read book Into the Depths written by Mary Margaret Funk and published by Lantern Books. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1984, Sr. Mary Margaret Funk, a Benedictine nun from Indiana, paid a visit to Maryknoll missionary nuns working in Bolivia. On what should have been a routine trip to the local town for a convocation ceremony, a flash flood swept away the jeep in which she, three nuns, a priest, and a disabled boy they had adopted were traveling. Only she and the priest survived. What happened that night catapulted Sr. Meg into twenty-five years of prayer and self-examination. She relentlessly explored her relationship with the transcendent and immanent God, the profundities of her religious tradition, her commitment to spiritual practice, and her very human failings. It was a journey that left her spiritually naked before the terrible love of God; a journey to keep one's heart open to the transforming wounds of suffering. In the great tradition of spiritual confessions from Augustine to Thomas Merton's The Seven-Storey Mountain, Into the Depths is a fearlessly honest and simply told account of one woman's struggle to engage at the deepest levels with the most profound questions of faith.

Book excerpt: Thorlainen finds his mundane and generally pointless life disrupted by an apparent galactic catastrophe and is soon on the run from the totalitarian world of Tellus, the non-affluents, like him, have reluctantly submitted to for too long. His first impression is, he is the sole survivor but surviving brings mortal danger. He meets a young affluent woman, Chitmaa, caring for two intelligent children. Thorlainen is a Non-Commercial-Being but Chitmaa believes they must conjugate traditionally. Thorlainen agrees though he can see he is right out of his depth in this relationship and in his understanding of her motives. Normally a solitary character, Thorlainen's acquaintances snowball as they flee, and gradually he takes the lead, assisted by a paradoxical old man and a military officer, escaping execution. Unlike Thorlainen, the others have friends and relatives, who (if they are still live) are at the deportation area awaiting relocation. Thorlainen helps them, and then reluctantly takes command of a ship full of deportees: his nautical expertise becoming paramount, when it becomes evident they must try to escape by sea.
Book Synopsis From the Depths of Our Hearts by : Pope Benedict XVI
Download or read book From the Depths of Our Hearts written by Pope Benedict XVI and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2020 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The priesthood is going through a dark time", according to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Robert Cardinal Sarah. "Wounded by the revelation of so many scandals, disconcerted by the constant questioning of their consecrated celibacy, many priests are tempted by the thought of giving up and abandoning everything." In this book, the pope emeritus and the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments give their brother priests, and the whole Church, a message of hope. They honestly address the spiritual challenges faced by priests today, while pointing to deeper conversion to Jesus Christ as the key to faithful and fruitful priestly ministry and genuine reform. Benedict XVI and Cardinal Sarah "fraternally offer these reflections to the people of God and, of course, in a spirit of filial obedience, to Pope Francis", who has said, "I think that celibacy is a gift for the Church. . . . I don't agree with allowing optional celibacy, no." Responding to calls for refashioning the priesthood, including proposals from participants in the Amazonian Synod, two wise, spiritually astute pastors explain the importance of priestly celibacy for the good of the whole Church. Drawing on Vatican II, they present celibacy as not just "a mere precept of ecclesiastical law", but as a sharing in Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross and his identity as Bridegroom of the Church.

Book Synopsis From the Depths of Death in the Midst of Chaos by : Edmund Alexander Sims
Download or read book From the Depths of Death in the Midst of Chaos written by Edmund Alexander Sims and published by Dope Enterprises. This book was released on 2010-08-29 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Depths of Death in the Midst of Chaos is the second novel of the True Love Trilogy - a genre-crossing story line that could pass as much for action and romance as it does its noticeably pointed focus in modern science fiction. Continuing things within the SpaceStation Colt series, this second book takes a startling detour for the darkest concerning an interstellar conflict which spans not only the Epic Universe (2009 - ) but its defunct literary predecessor Zero Universe (1987 - 1994) - forever linking the two together. Lieutenant Marileva Dike-Sims returns to sort through the events that were introduced in her own universe while navigating the events which happened to be left unfinished from a universe that she never even knew existed. This eBook is one of those rare literary works which is so self-aware that it becomes a mastery in every sense of its allotted genres by deeply honoring the characters and lending much-deserved closure to the old while propelling the current into their own new, expansive light - credibly. Something To Root For: The intrigue of pro- and antagonistic characters makes them both thoroughly enjoyable; the amount and level of social commentary is staggering; the fiction part of this sequel happens to be almost three times the size of its predecessor while the science part includes stepped up technology to match; and the eloquence of the prose is matched only by the complexity of the story.
