Book Synopsis Drawings by Thomas Rowlandson in the Huntington Collection by : Thomas Rowlandson
Download or read book Drawings by Thomas Rowlandson in the Huntington Collection written by Thomas Rowlandson and published by Huntington Library Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Huntington collection of drawings by Thomas Rowlandson is generally regarded as the largest and most comprehensive at present in a public museum. The collection offers an unrivaled opportunity for the study of this prolific artist's range of interests and the development of his technique. As a line draftsman and humorist, Thomas Rowlandson was probably the finest England has ever produced. Certainly he had a wider command of comic devices and comes closer to exploiting their full potentialities than any other British artist. He is also wonderfully inventive in discovering and expressing the comic aspects of a great variety of everyday situations. His reputation as a humorist, though, should not obscure his achievement in other fields: he is a charming landscapist and genre artist, and a skillful portraitist. All these facets of Rowlandson's work are well represented in this volume, which reproduces and catalogues all of the Huntington drawings, including those from A Tour in a Post Chaise and The English Dance of Death, both previously published by the Huntington. In his introductory essay, Robert Wark discusses Rowlandson's art and illustrates the various aspects of his work by relating them to selected drawings that are reproduced in full color. The book will be of immense value to the student of art history, and the layman will be delighted by the vigor and sheer virtuosity of Rowlandson's work.

Download or read book The Club written by Leo Damrosch and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prize-winning biographer Leo Damrosch tells the story of “the Club,” a group of extraordinary writers, artists, and thinkers who gathered weekly at a London tavern In 1763, the painter Joshua Reynolds proposed to his friend Samuel Johnson that they invite a few friends to join them every Friday at the Turk’s Head Tavern in London to dine, drink, and talk until midnight. Eventually the group came to include among its members Edmund Burke, Adam Smith, Edward Gibbon, and James Boswell. It was known simply as “the Club.” In this captivating book, Leo Damrosch brings alive a brilliant, competitive, and eccentric cast of characters. With the friendship of the “odd couple” Samuel Johnson and James Boswell at the heart of his narrative, Damrosch conjures up the precarious, exciting, and often brutal world of late eighteenth-century Britain. This is the story of an extraordinary group of people whose ideas helped to shape their age, and our own.
Book Synopsis Regarding Thomas Rowlandson, 1757-1827 by : Matthew Payne
Download or read book Regarding Thomas Rowlandson, 1757-1827 written by Matthew Payne and published by Paul Holberton Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story of one of the great graphic satirists and watercolour artists of the British School is based upon a mass of new research. Rowlandson kept no diary, wrote few letters, and occurs only infrequently in the memoirs of others. Source material is not abundant. But in more than a decade's research, using church and official records, newspaper reports, contemporary accounts, sales catalogues and consideration of his pictures, the authors shed new light on Rowlandson's family background, his education and art training in London and Paris, his personal and professional associations, his travels in Britain and abroad, and the work itself. Fully illustrated, this contribution to scholarship will appeal to the general reader and specialist alike and is destined to become the standard work on this benchmark British artist.

Book Synopsis Picturing Animals in Britain, 1750-1850 by : Diana Donald
Download or read book Picturing Animals in Britain, 1750-1850 written by Diana Donald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From fine art paintings by such artists as Stubbs and Landseer to zoological illustrations and popular prints, a vast array of animal images was created in Britain during the century from 1750 to 1850. This highly original book investigates the rich meanings of these visual representations as well as the ways in which animals were actually used and abused. What Diana Donald discovers in this fascinating study is a deep and unresolved ambivalence that lies at the heart of human attitudes toward animals. The author brings to light dichotomies in human thinking about animals throughout this key period: awestruck with the beauty and spirit of wild animals, people nevertheless desired to capture and tame them; the belief that other species are inferior was firmly held, yet at the same time animals in stories and fables were given human attributes; though laws against animal cruelty were introduced, the overworking of horses and the allure of sport hunting persisted. Animals are central in cultural history, Donald concludes, and compelling questions about them--then and now--remain unanswered.
