Book Synopsis Secularization and the World Religions by : Hans Joas
Download or read book Secularization and the World Religions written by Hans Joas and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of religion, its contemporary and future significance and its role in society and state is currently perceived as an urgent one by many and is widely discussed within the public sphere. But it has also long been one of the core topics of the historically oriented social sciences. The immense stock of knowledge furnished by the history of religion and religious studies, theology, sociology and history has to be introduced into the public conscience today. This can promote greater awareness of the contemporary global religious situation and its links with politics and economics and counter rash syntheses such as the “clash of civilizations”. This volume is concerned with the connections between religions and the social world and with the extent, limits, and future of secularization. The first part deals with major religious traditions and their explicit or implicit ideas about the individual, social and political order. The second part gives an overview of the religious situation in important geographical areas. Additional contributions analyze the legal organization of the relationship between state and religion in a global perspective and the role of the natural sciences in the process of secularization. The contributors are internationally renowned scholars like Winfried Brugger, José Casanova, Friedrich Wilhelm Graf, Hans Joas, Hans G. Kippenberg, Gudrun Krämer, David Martin, Eckart Otto and Rudolf Wagner.

Book Synopsis The Religious Situation by : Goldwin Smith
Download or read book The Religious Situation written by Goldwin Smith and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What would the world be without religion? That is the dread question which seems now to be everywhere presenting itself. Would even the social fabric remain unshaken? Has not its stability partly depended on the general belief that the dispensation, with all its inequalities, was the ordinance of the Creator, and that for inequalities here there would be compensation hereafter? The belief may not in common minds have been very present; but it would seem to have had its influence. Apparently, it is now departing. In some places it seems to have fled. Scepticism, with social unrest, comes in its room. "The Religious Situation" is a Christian Apologetic article looking at the state of religious belief in the western world in the 20th century. Author Goldwin Smith notes the growing unbelief in the long held Christian doctrines and the replacement of this with a combination of scientific thought and mysticism.

Book Synopsis The Many Altars of Modernity by : Peter L. Berger
Download or read book The Many Altars of Modernity written by Peter L. Berger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the summation of many decades of work by Peter L. Berger, an internationally renowned sociologist of religion. Secularization theory—which saw modernity as leading to a decline of religion—has been empirically falsified. It should be replaced by a nuanced theory of pluralism. In this new book, Berger outlines the possible foundations for such a theory, addressing a wide range of issues spanning individual faith, interreligious societies, and the political order. He proposes a conversation around a new paradigm for religion and pluralism in an age of multiple modernities. The book also includes responses from three eminent scholars of religion: Nancy Ammerman, Detlef Pollack, and Fenggang Yang.
