Humane Alternatives to the Psychiatric Model provides more than twenty solicited chapters from experts worldwide, among them Peter Kinderman, former president of the British Psychological Society, and other respected cultural commentators and mental health experts.
Book Synopsis Diagnostic Tests in Pediatric Pulmonology by : Stephanie D. Davis
Download or read book Diagnostic Tests in Pediatric Pulmonology written by Stephanie D. Davis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years, diagnostic tests for pediatric pulmonologists have revolutionized care of children afflicted with respiratory disorders. These tests have been used to not only help in diagnosis, but also in the management and treatment of these children. Bronchoscopic, imaging and physiologic advances have improved clinical care of these children and have been used as outcome measures in research trials. Diagnostic Tests in Pediatric Pulmonology: Applications and Interpretation describes the various diagnostic modalities (especially the newer ones) that are available for the evaluation of pediatric respiratory disorders. It also provides an understanding of the advantages and limitations of each test so that the clinician may choose the most appropriate ones. An internationally renowned group of authors describe how best to interpret the key findings in a variety of tests as well as the possible pitfalls in incorrect interpretation. This volume focuses on the main diagnostic modalities used in the evaluation of pediatric patients with respiratory disorders and presents up-to-date information on the advantages and limitations of each test for a variety of conditions encountered in the practice of pediatric pulmonology. Clinical utility of these tests is also highlighted. This valuable resource is well suited to practicing clinicians, including pediatric pulmonologists, pediatricians and primary care practitioners, as well as trainees, respiratory therapists and clinical researchers.

Book Synopsis Control of Distributed Parameter and Stochastic Systems by : Shuping Chen
Download or read book Control of Distributed Parameter and Stochastic Systems written by Shuping Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mathematical treatment of many problems which arise in physics, economics, engineering, management, etc., the researcher frequently faces two major difficulties: infinite dimensionality and randomness of the evolution process. Infinite dimensionality occurs when the evolution in time of a process is accompanied by a space-like dependence; for example, spatial distribution of the temperature for a heat-conductor, spatial dependence of the time-varying displacement of a membrane subject to external forces, etc. Randomness is intrinsic to the mathematical formulation of many phenomena, such as fluctuation in the stock market, or noise in communication networks. Control theory of distributed parameter systems and stochastic systems focuses on physical phenomena which are governed by partial differential equations, delay-differential equations, integral differential equations, etc., and stochastic differential equations of various types. This has been a fertile field of research with over 40 years of history, which continues to be very active under the thrust of new emerging applications. Among the subjects covered are: Control of distributed parameter systems; Stochastic control; Applications in finance/insurance/manufacturing; Adapted control; Numerical approximation . It is essential reading for applied mathematicians, control theorists, economic/financial analysts and engineers.

Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic introduction to recent achievements and development in research on the structure of finite non-simple groups, the theory of classes of groups and their applications. In particular, the related systematic theories are considered and some new approaches and research methods are described – e.g., the F-hypercenter of groups, X-permutable subgroups, subgroup functors, generalized supplementary subgroups, quasi-F-group, and F-cohypercenter for Fitting classes. At the end of each chapter, we provide relevant supplementary information and introduce readers to selected open problems.

Book Synopsis Mechanics of Materials Labs with SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2015 by : Huei-Huang Lee
Download or read book Mechanics of Materials Labs with SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2015 written by Huei-Huang Lee and published by SDC Publications. This book was released on 2015-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as a software-based lab book to complement a standard textbook in a mechanics of material course, which is usually taught at the undergraduate level. This book can also be used as an auxiliary workbook in a CAE or Finite Element Analysis course for undergraduate students. Each book comes with a disc containing video demonstrations, a quick introduction to SOLIDWORKS, and all the part files used in the book. This textbook has been carefully developed with the understanding that CAE software has developed to a point that it can be used as a tool to aid students in learning engineering ideas, concepts and even formulas. These concepts are demonstrated in each section of this book. Using the graphics-based tools of SOLIDWORKS Simulation can help reduce the dependency on mathematics to teach these concepts substantially. The contents of this book have been written to match the contents of most mechanics of materials textbooks. There are 14 chapters in this book. Each chapter is designed as one week’s workload, consisting of 2 to 3 sections. Each section is designed for a student to follow the exact steps in that section and learn a concept or topic of mechanics of materials. Typically, each section takes 15-40 minutes to complete the exercises. Each copy of this book comes with a disc containing videos that demonstrate the steps used in each section of the book, a 123 page introduction to Part and Assembly Modeling with SOLIDWORKS in PDF format, and all the files readers may need if they have any trouble. The concise introduction to SOLIDWORKS pdf is designed for those students who have no experience with SOLIDWORKS and want to feel more comfortable working on the exercises in this book. All of the same content is available for download on the book’s companion website.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Probability: A First Course by : Anirban DasGupta
Download or read book Fundamentals of Probability: A First Course written by Anirban DasGupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability theory is one branch of mathematics that is simultaneously deep and immediately applicable in diverse areas of human endeavor. It is as fundamental as calculus. Calculus explains the external world, and probability theory helps predict a lot of it. In addition, problems in probability theory have an innate appeal, and the answers are often structured and strikingly beautiful. A solid background in probability theory and probability models will become increasingly more useful in the twenty-?rst century, as dif?cult new problems emerge, that will require more sophisticated models and analysis. Thisisa text onthe fundamentalsof thetheoryofprobabilityat anundergraduate or ?rst-year graduate level for students in science, engineering, and economics. The only mathematical background required is knowledge of univariate and multiva- ate calculus and basic linear algebra. The book covers all of the standard topics in basic probability, such as combinatorial probability, discrete and continuous distributions, moment generating functions, fundamental probability inequalities, the central limit theorem, and joint and conditional distributions of discrete and continuous random variables. But it also has some unique features and a forwa- looking feel.

Book Synopsis Mathematics across the Iron Curtain by : Christopher Hollings
Download or read book Mathematics across the Iron Curtain written by Christopher Hollings and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of semigroups is a relatively young branch of mathematics, with most of the major results having appeared after the Second World War. This book describes the evolution of (algebraic) semigroup theory from its earliest origins to the establishment of a full-fledged theory. Semigroup theory might be termed `Cold War mathematics' because of the time during which it developed. There were thriving schools on both sides of the Iron Curtain, although the two sides were not always able to communicate with each other, or even gain access to the other's publications. A major theme of this book is the comparison of the approaches to the subject of mathematicians in East and West, and the study of the extent to which contact between the two sides was possible.
