Book Synopsis Student Companion to James Fenimore Cooper by : Craig White
Download or read book Student Companion to James Fenimore Cooper written by Craig White and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-09-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Student Companion to James Fenimore Cooper At the dawn of America's continental empire, James Fenimore Cooper in the early 1800s became the new nation's first major novelist, inaugurating a great period in American literature and bequeathing a number of classic texts including the Leather-Stocking Tales. This Companion to Cooper's writings appeals to high school and college students by outlining Cooper's most frequently assigned novels and establishing their historical backgrounds concerning American Indians and the early United States. Two opening chapters review the author's life and accomplishments, and another offers tips for managing Cooper's style and subject matter. Cooper's breakthrough novel The Spy (1821), which features George Washington as a major actor, has a chapter of its own. The second half of the Companion highlights the Leather-Stocking Tales, with one chapter on the overall saga and five chapters devoted to the individual novels in the series: The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie. Altogether this Companion shares the spirit of adventure that made Cooper a pioneer of American Romantic literature and his writings a perennial source for ideas and images of Native America, the frontier, and the early modern USA.

Book Synopsis A Historical Guide to James Fenimore Cooper by : Leland S. Person
Download or read book A Historical Guide to James Fenimore Cooper written by Leland S. Person and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Historical Guide to James Fenimore Cooper features new critical essays by noted American literature scholars, Gerald Kennedy, John P. McWilliams, Dana Nelson, and Barbara Mann, as well as a brief biography by authorized Cooper biographer Wayne Franklin and a survey of Cooper scholarship and criticism and bibliography by Jeffrey Walker. Kennedy examines Cooper's five-volume Gleanings in Europe as the most ambitious effort by an antebellum American author to scrutinize the new nation from a critical, transnational perspective. McWilliams challenges the critical and scholarly neglect of Cooper's women, by analyzing the four Revolutionary War novels in which young women play critical roles in furthering political debates about loyalty, independence and family upon which America's new republican culture depends. Examining the five Leatherstocking novels, Nelson shows how groupings of male and female characters across lines of class, habitude and race foreground the problems of creating new identities that can support the democratic aims of the early United States. Mann defends Cooper from nineteenth-century as well as twentieth-century attacks that he was a "race traitor" and argues provocatively that Natty Bumppo is a mixed-race character. Wayne Franklin offers a preview of his forthcoming two-volume biography of Cooper. Editor Leland S. Person provides an introduction and an illustrated chronology of Cooper's life and nineteenth-century historical events.
Book Synopsis The Deerslayer Illustrated by : James Fenimore Cooper
Download or read book The Deerslayer Illustrated written by James Fenimore Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Deerslayer, or The First War-Path (1841) was the last of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales to be written. Its 1740-1745 time period makes it the first installment chronologically and in the lifetime of the hero of the Leatherstocking tales, Natty Bumppo. The novel's setting on Otsego Lake in central, upstate New York, is the same as that of The Pioneers, the first of the Leatherstocking Tales to be published (1823). The Deerslayer is considered to be the prequel to the rest of the series. Fenimore Cooper begins his work by relating the astonishing advance of civilization in New York State, which is the setting of four of his five Leatherstocking Tales.
Download or read book Westerns written by Janet Walker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cowboys and Indians, sheriffs and outlaws, schoolmarms and barkeeps of Western films have wholly transformed our ideas about the reality of the American frontier. Westerns is the first book to consider seriously the historical meanings and functions of the Western film genre. In Westerns , leading scholars unpack the ways in which the form has embellished, mythologized, and erased past events. Contributors explore the mythic Wild West envisioned by Buffalo Bill Cody, the revisionist aims of recent westerns like Posse, Lone Star, and Dead Man , and how the genre addresses key issues of biography, authenticity, race, and representation. Included is an introduction by Janet Walker.

Book Synopsis Teaching Secondary English by : Daniel Sheridan
Download or read book Teaching Secondary English written by Daniel Sheridan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Teaching Secondary English is thoroughly revised, but its purpose has not changed. Like the popular first edition, it balances content knowledge with methodology, theory with practice, and problem-posing with suggested solutions. The tone and format are inviting, while addressing student-readers on a professional level. Rather than attempting to cover everything, the text provides a framework and materials for teaching a secondary English methods course, while allowing considerable choice for the instructor. The focus is on teaching literature, writing, and language--the basics of the profession. Attention is given to the issues that arise as one seeks to explore what it means to "teach English." The problems and tensions of becoming a teacher are discussed frankly, in a manner that helps students figure out their own attitudes and solutions. Features: * Focuses on a few central concepts in the teaching of secondary English * Provides an anthology of 22 readable and challenging essays on key topics--allowing students to hear a variety of voices and opinions * Includes an applications section for each reading that extends the discussion and asks students to explore problems and grapple with important issues related to the articles * Offers short writing assignments in questions that follow the readings and in brief writing tasks in the applications, and a longer writing assignment at the end of each chapter * Addresses student readers directly without talking down to them New in the Second Edition: * This edition is shorter, tighter, and easier to use. * The opening and concluding chapters more directly address the concerns of new teachers. * The anthology is substantially updated (of the 22 articles included, 14 are new to this edition). * Each essay is preceded by a brief introduction and followed by questions for further thought. * There are fewer applications, but these are more extensive and more fully integrated within the text. * A writing assignment is provided at the end of each chapter. * Interviews with college students--before and after student teaching--are included in Chapters 1 and 6. * The bibliographies at the end of each chapter are fully updated.
