Book excerpt: It has often been said that the two things in life you can't avoid are death and taxes. While the IRS puts out numerous publications and there are CPAs and lawyers around every corner ready to dish out advice for the taxpayer, the best lawyer in the world can't get you out of dying. Death is the one trip we all take, with no tour guide or travel agent to hold our hand. Diana Ingram has written a much needed and uncommonly positive book to help us deal with death, both our own and those closest to us. Her work as a grief counselor and hospice volunteer has given Ingram a unique view of our last journey, all of which, along with extensive research, she has brought to this guide. Covering all aspects of death from the practical to the personal, Passport includes information on legal preparations, funeral services, Hospice care and religion. Ingram has even included a workbook to help you through what can be a daunting process. Passport to a Happy Death makes you think, prepare, and even laugh. Moreover it will help give peace of mind to both you and your loved ones. This is an altogether unique and useful read.

Young Sophia has lived in so many different countries, she can barely keep count. Stationed now with her family in Central America because of her parents' work, Sophia feels displaced as an American living abroad, when she has hardly spent any of her life in America. Everything changes when she reads a letter she was never meant to see and uncovers her parents' secret. They are not who they say they are. They are working for the CIA. As Sophia tries to make sense of this news, and the web of lies surrounding her, she begins to question everything. The impact that this has on Sophia's emerging sense of self and understanding of the world makes for a page-turning exploration of lies and double lives. In the hands of this extraordinary graphic storyteller, this astonishing true story bursts to life.

Book excerpt: "This piece is part of a series of attempts to make sense of a place, of a culture, of a system. How can something so small as a passport be so defining of someone’s life experience? Is the commodification of nature still a symptom of a colonialist process? Using the format of a passport, I collected stickers from fruits and vegetables that I consumed in my first months in the US; I had recently gone through the process of having to apply for a visa. The stamp I got in my passport is the reason I can be here now. Eating and sleeping in a different land than the one where I was born and grew up in. Eating the fruits grown in a land much more like my own. We both -- me and the fruits -- traveled and crossed borders. I designed pages with mountains and palm trees, reflecting the landscape I now see every day. I bound these pages together. On the [first page], one sentence from Frantz Fanon is split in two: “the settler’s town is a well-fed town / its belly is always full of good things.”"--from publisher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You have a call, Elder Wilder.” When missionary Micah Wilder set his sights on bringing a Baptist congregation into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had no idea that he was the one about to be changed. Yet when he finally came to know the God of the Bible, Micah had no choice but to surrender himself—no matter the consequences. For a passionate young Mormon who had grown up in the Church, finding authentic faith meant giving up all he knew: his community, his ambitions, and his place in the world. Yet as Micah struggled to reconcile the teachings of his Church with the truths revealed in the Bible, he awakened to his need for God’s grace. This led him to be summoned to the door of the mission president, terrified but confident in the testimony he knew could cost him everything. Passport to Heaven is a gripping account of Micah’s surprising journey from living as a devoted member of a religion based on human works to embracing the divine mercy and freedom that can only be found in Jesus Christ.

Decades before Robert Brown Parker began writing his books about Spenser, a man named Robert Bogardus Parker (1905-1955) penned this extraordinary novel of post-war intrigue. From the corridors and compartments of the Orient Express to the shadowy, ruined streets of Budapest – which he saw firsthand as a foreign correspondent during World War II – Parker takes you on a nightmare tour of a land where life is cheap, old hatreds run strong, and a couple of Americans can find themselves in more danger than they ever imagined. With all the immediacy of the wartime dispatches Parker filed from Turkey, Danzig, Warsaw, and Bucharest and all the authority of a man who himself spent three years crossing borders without a passport and narrowly avoiding arrest by the Gestapo, PASSPORT TO PERIL paints a heart-stopping picture of desperate men in a desperate time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passport Photos, a self-conscious act of artistic and intellectual forgery, is a report on the immigrant condition. A multigenre book combining theory, poetry, cultural criticism, and photography, it explores the complexities of the immigration experience, intervening in the impersonal language of the state. Passport Photos joins books by writers like Edward Said and Trinh T. Minh-ha in the search for a new poetics and politics of diaspora. Organized as a passport, Passport Photos is a unique work, taking as its object of analysis and engagement the lived experience of post-coloniality--especially in the United States and India. The book is a collage, moving back and forth between places, historical moments, voices, and levels of analysis. Seeking to link cultural, political, and aesthetic critiques, it weaves together issues as diverse as Indian fiction written in English, signs put up by the border patrol at the U.S.-Tijuana border, ethnic restaurants in New York City, the history of Indian indenture in Trinidad, Native Americans at the Superbowl, and much more. The borders this book crosses again and again are those where critical theory meets popular journalism, and where political poetry encounters the work of documentary photography. The argument for such border crossings lies in the reality of people's lives. This thought-provoking book explores that reality, as it brings postcolonial theory to a personal level and investigates global influences on local lives of immigrants.

Book excerpt: In a world of shadows, it is easy to get lost Dotan Naor, an Israeli private investigator, ousted from Shin Bet—Israel's internal security service—goes to Thailand to find Sigal Bardon, a beautiful young girl from a wealthy Israeli family. Sigal has disappeared in Bangkok—completely. Dotan has connections in Thailand and he's familiar with Bangkok's dark side—the narrow alleys with bars and hookers, trenches of stagnant water, hotel rooms with illicit activity. This is where he intends to start his search. But when the passport of the missing Israeli girl ends up in his hands during his first taxi ride in the city, he's suspicious that someone is playing him. But who? And why? As Dotan searches for Sigal, police corruption blocks his every path while he delves deeper. Every lead he pursues draws him closer and closer to a black hole in his "own" past—one intertwined with his pursuit of Sigal—one that leads him to Reuven—and the haunting failure that led to the dismissal of both of them from Shin Bet. The wound between Dotan and Reuven is raw and deep, but Dotan realizes it must be healed in order to save Sigal. Perfect for fans of Daniel Silva and Nelson DeMille

Book excerpt: Memoirs of a Jew who was born as Emanuel Tenenwurzel in 1928 in Vilna and moved to Miechów as a child. The Polish antisemitism he experienced before the war worsened under German occupation. In early 1941 his family was interned in the Miechów ghetto, whose Judenrat he depicts as facilitating Jewish survival. His family escaped deportation and he hid in a Catholic monastery. He was sexually abused by a monk there, then hidden by a member of the Polish underground in a village. From there a good German helped him get to Kraków, where his mother and sister hid. After escaping to Hungary, he was caught trying to emigrate to Eretz Israel. He was briefly incarcerated in Yugoslavia and then in Budapest, where he met the paratrooper Peretz Goldstein, who had been sent to occupied Europe from Palestine. Claims that the paratroopers did not strengthen Jewish resistance, but increased the risk to the local Jewish underground. Under the Arrow Cross regime, he managed to obtain "Aryan" papers. After the war he encountered anti-Jewish hostility in Miechów and learned that his father had perished; he lived for some time in Germany and emigrated to the U.S. in 1952. Pp. 219-278, "Reflections", discuss hate, Islamic fundamentalism, genocide, Christianity and the Holocaust, and Holocaust historiography. Contends that to survive was heroic, to revolt was suicidal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to distinguish between those who may and may not enter or leave, states everywhere have developed extensive systems of identification, central to which is the passport. This innovative book argues that documents such as passports, internal passports and related mechanisms have been crucial in making distinctions between citizens and non-citizens. It examines how the concept of citizenship has been used to delineate rights and penalties regarding property, liberty, taxes and welfare. It focuses on the US and Western Europe, moving from revolutionary France to the Napoleonic era, the American Civil War, the British industrial revolution, pre-World War I Italy, the reign of Germany's Third Reich and beyond. This innovative study combines theory and empirical data in questioning how and why states have established the exclusive right to authorize and regulate the movement of people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of an illustrious Romanian-born, Hungarian-speaking, Vienna-schooled, Columbia-educated and Harvard-formed, middle-class Jewish professor of politics and other subjects. Markovits revels in a rootlessness that offers him comfort, succor, and the inspiration for his life’s work. As we follow his quest to find a home, we encounter his engagement with the important political, social, and cultural developments of five decades on two continents. We also learn about his musical preferences, from classical to rock; his love of team sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball, and American football; and his devotion to dogs and their rescue. Above all, the book analyzes the travails of emigration the author experienced twice, moving from Romania to Vienna and then from Vienna to New York. Markovits’s Candide-like travels through the ups and downs of post-1945 Europe and America offer a panoramic view of key currents that shaped the second half of the twentieth century. By shedding light on the cultural similarities and differences between both continents, the book shows why America fascinated Europeans like Markovits and offered them a home that Europe never did: academic excellence, intellectual openness, cultural diversity and religious tolerance. America for Markovits was indeed the “beacon on the hill,” despite the ugliness of its racism, the prominence of its everyday bigotry, the severity of its growing economic inequality, and the presence of other aspects that mar this worthy experiment’s daily existence.
