Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathedral of the Pines presents Gregory Crewdson's first new body of work in over five years. The series marks a return to Crewdson's classic style of storytelling via the single image, using light and color to create newly intimate, psychologically charged imagery. It also marks a time of transition for the artist, including a retreat from New York to a remote home and studio in western Massachusetts--a period of time during which Crewdson chose to remain socially withdrawn, instead committing to daily, long-distance, open-water swims and cross-country skiing on wooded paths. Cathedral of the Pines is named after one of these trails, deep in the forests of Becket, Massachusetts, the site where he found the inspiration to make these new pictures. It was there that he felt darkness lift, experienced a reconnection with his artistic process, and moved into a period of renewal and intense creative productivity. The photographs are accompanied by an essay by Alexander Nemerov, who addresses the work in relation to the American past, focusing in particular on the way the images draw space and time down to ceremonial points, in which "all that ever happened in these places seems crystallized in his tableaux, as if the quiet melancholy of Crewdson's scenes gathered the unruly sorrows and other little-guessed feelings of people long gone who once stood on those spots." Gregory Crewdson (born 1962) is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale School of Art, where he is now Director of Graduate Studies in Photography. His series Beneath the Roses is the subject of the 2012 documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters. His work has been exhibited widely in the US and Europe, including a survey that toured throughout Europe from 2001 to 2008. He is represented by Gagosian Gallery, New York.

Book excerpt: New York Times–Bestselling Author: In this “compelling and entertaining” mystery, a retired PI finds the cover-up may be deadlier than the crime (Midwest Book Review). After closing his private investigation firm and moving to a small cabin in the Vermont woods, Oakley Tyler can finally begin his retirement. But his peace is interrupted when Jeremiah Smith visits and asks the ex-PI to help him stop unidentified men from killing his grandson, a local newspaper reporter. Tyler is reluctant to take the case, wishing to get back to a life of leisure, but when Smith is killed in a hit-and-run, Tyler is convinced someone has silenced the old man to protect a secret. Delving into the mystery, Tyler finds himself experiencing mysterious visits from a Native American woman, investigating a potentially devastating threat to the environment—and facing a more immediate danger when someone starts making attempts on his life . . . “An accomplished writer . . . This rather grizzled character he has come up with is about as ruggedly individualistic as any Vermonter could wish for.” —Reviewing the Evidence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toni Morrison’s ninth novel, A Mercy, has been received with much acclaim by both the critical and lay reading public. Hailed as her best novel after the award-winning Beloved, most critics to date have concentrated on its setting in the late seventeenth century, a time in which, according to the author herself, slavery was “pre-racial,” a time before the “Terrible Transformation” irrevocably linked slavery to skin-color or “race.” Though a slender, easy to read novel, A Mercy is in fact a richly-layered text, full of multiple meanings and possibilities, a work of art that has only just begun to be “mined” for its critical import. The present volume is the first to deal with these possibilities, presenting a variety of critical approaches that include narrative theory, the eco-critical, the geographical, the allegorical, the Miltonian, the feminist, the metaphorical, and the Lacanian. As such, not only is it conceived to enrich the work of Morrison scholars and students, but also to illuminate the use of critical theory in elucidating a complex literary text. A Mercy clamors for close reading and thoughtful interrogation and promises to reward the perceptive reader.
