Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John was always healthy. Then at age twenty-six a rare autoimmune disease struck out of nowhere. “Idiopathic,” doctors said of the phenomenon that tried to take his life violently several times and to destroy his spirit more quietly over the next several years. Since John Got Sick: A Quest for Survival and Faith is the story of a young man’s heroic battle to survive both the initial onslaught and the ongoing assault of a traumatic autoimmune disease and its ensuing consequences (including dialysis, disability, transplant, depression, opioid dependence, and post-traumatic stress disorder). Simultaneously, it is the story of a mother’s love and strength against daunting odds, including donating a kidney. Traumatic illness often ends in a relatively quick death or a sudden miraculous recovery. John’s was neither. His is a story, with parts written in his words, of courage, endurance, and patience, along with a stubborn refusal to quit. While his mother sought God and prayer, John’s will to live was based in something else—perhaps even more intrinsic. For anyone who has suffered a serious illness, whether personally or with a child; anyone facing the challenges of autoimmune disease; and any medical professionals who have worked to help them, this book provides insight from the patient’s perspective. Patient advocates, clergy, and community members may benefit from vicariously experiencing the multifaceted challenges—mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and financial—shown here. And likely any mother, or parent, will identify, feel the heartache, and wonder, Why not me?

Book excerpt: The next time you get sick, consider this before picking up the aspirin: your body may be doing exactly what it's supposed to. In this ground-breaking book, two pioneers of the science of Darwinian medicine argue that illness as well as the factors that predispose us toward it are subject to the same laws of natural selection that otherwise make our bodies such miracles of design. Among the concerns they raise: When may a fever be beneficial? Why do pregnant women get morning sickness? How do certain viruses "manipulate" their hosts into infecting others? What evolutionary factors may be responsible for depression and panic disorder? Deftly summarizing research on disorders ranging from allergies to Alzheimer's, and form cancer to Huntington's chorea, Why We Get Sick, answers these questions and more. The result is a book that will revolutionize our attitudes toward illness and will intrigue and instruct lay person and medical practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: Most of us, at one time or another, have encountered tragedy. If you find yourself reading the description of this book, I assume this is the case for you and I'd like to say I'm truly sorry. To be honest, I really wish everything in this book were tales of fiction and that my experiences were all a dream. But the stories I courageously share, are my own truthful encounters with life as a caregiver. This book is an outline of my experiences while taking care of my dad, both physically and mentally, during his battle with cancer. It is a tool designed to help those in similar positions navigate coping, self-awareness, empathy, compassion, self-care, support, education, commitment, grief, love and embracing the day-to-day reality of caregiving. Although very cancer-specific, these words can provide encouragement to all those questioning whether or not to take on the role of caregiver. I did my best to write the book I was looking for when my journey began in early 2013. I don't have any 'top 10' pieces of advice to offer, and any advice I do give is solely based off what was found to work successfully for my dad. I'm not a doctor, and I don't have any professional medical training whatsoever. At the time this story began I was just a son doing everything possible for my best friend - I educated myself on the run. My dad was given a terminal diagnosis of nine months to a year to live. He ended up passing away two and a half years later, and although he fought hard for us, I want my dad's fight to be worth more. I want his struggles to give inspiration, and I want to see a shy, humble man's battle provide support and hope long after he's gone. I share these stories about a man with an incurable disease to demonstrate how myself and my loved ones were able to extend his life beyond what doctors ever expected. During my dad's final year, I used social media as a positive platform to share the daily struggles and absolute joys I was constantly faced with. The outpouring of love and support I received is what made me realize this book needed to be written. For obvious reasons, I hate the fact that this book has grounds to exist, but I will use it as a vehicle to share a journey that will hopefully help you with yours.*Description taken from Chapter One: To The Reader

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A writer takes on subjects as varied as vomit, Kathy Acker's wardrobe, and Occupy Oakland, in lyric explorations of illness, health, and the body. A moving meld of essay, memoir, and story, When the Sick Rule the World collects Dodie Bellamy's new and recent lyric prose. Taking on topics as eclectic as vomit, Kathy Acker's wardrobe, and Occupy Oakland, Bellamy here examines illness, health, and the body—both the social body and the individual body—in essays that glitter with wit even at their darkest moments. In a safe house in Marin County, strangers allergic to the poisons of the world gather for an evening's solace. In Oakland, protesters dance an ecstatic bacchanal over the cancerous body of the city-state they love and hate. In the elegiac memoir, “Phone Home,” Bellamy meditates on her dying mother's last days via the improbable cipher of Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Finally, Bellamy offers a piercing critique of the displacement and blight that have accompanied Twitter's move into her warehouse-district neighborhood, and the pitiless imperialism of tech consciousness. A participant in the New Narrative movement and a powerful influence on younger writers, Bellamy views heteronormativity and capitalism as plagues, and celebrates the micro-revolts of those on the outskirts. In its deft blending of forms, When the Sick Rule the World resiliently and defiantly proclaims the “undeath of the author.” In the realm of sickness, Bellamy asserts, subjectivity is not stable. “When the sick rule the world, mortality will be sexy,” Bellamy prophesies. Those defined by society as sick may, in fact, be its saviors.
