Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loud wail of the train whistle pierced the night at my grandmother's house. The enormous steam locomotive rattled the windows as it thundered past only a hundred feet away. Exciting thoughts of adventure far beyond my hometown of Orange, Texas, bubbled in my mind. This is more than a memoir, it is a portrait of Americana.Train depots were bustling centers of activity, but even more so early in the 29th century when my grandparents were raising their family.I discovered four valuable diaries from 1917-18 written by my grandparents after the death of my mother. These journals held such a rich treasure trove of history that I knew I had to share them with others. Will and Pearl Joiner lived in Orange in 1917 when it was a lively community with a large lumber and shipbuilding industry. Will was a banker and Pearl was a homemaker. Their diaries provide first hand account of family life and daily life including outings, theater visits, illnesses, and many fishing trips. Life was simpler then. Says Pearl in her diary, "In the afternoon we took a long walk, took the buggy to Mama and Papa's and let them have a nice ride." But their lives were not without challenge. Will became ill with Spanish influenza in the winter of 1918, at the same time millions of people across the globe died in this pandemic. Will, luckily, survived to provide for his young family.Their personalities emerge from the excerpts printed in these pages. "I caught fever today...car fever, not typhoid," Will writes and the next day he bought his first car: $875 of his "hard-earned cash." Pearl, a nurturing, loving mother, was always talking about her large family, the Cottles, many who congregated on their front porch to chat. Will constantly checked the weather for perfect fishing conditions, and brought home a string of freshly caught fish every week for their maid to fry up.My childhood memories of growing up near my grandparents are part of the narrative. The 1950s with poodle skirt and tons of petticoats are truths of my life. The record player spun songs by The Platters, Sam Cooke, Johnny Mathis, and, of course, Elvis Presley. Girls' slumber parties were popular in high school when the only mischief was puffing on an occasional cigarette or gossiping about classmates. In the fifties, "making out" referred to how you did on your school exam. "Grass" was what you mowed, "coke" was what you ordered at Zack's drive in, and "pot" was something your mother cooked carrots in.Many family photos, historical Orange photos, and weathered clippings found within the pages of the old diaries are peppered throughout the book. The saying of the Joiner's favorite humorist, Will Rogers, are featured at the beginning of every chapter. The diaries of the Joiners are an honest, unembellished key to our understanding of the past, providing valuable clues about how people lived in a small town in Texas in 1917-18. Readers will enjoy this simpler, yet colorful slice of history and my cherished memories of time gone by.

Book excerpt: Patti Conklin believes that when the universe began, a cacophony of tones, which we now identify as frequency, echoed throughout the universe, and they were both chaotic and highly ordered. This book is about how we can use that knowledge to impact our physical lives. Patti Conklin has learned that everything in the universe has a frequency, and that quantum physics goes hand in hand with metaphysics, even though we are taught that the two are separate. We are all made up of particles which vibrate, and these particles were created by a source . . . a God or Goddess she refers to as Father, which is greater than the sum total of us humans. In her work as a healer, she has learned from the work of Bruce Lipton on cellular biology and Richard Gerber on vibrational medicine. She has developed a toolbox, a method to usethe frequencies of light and sound to heal thousands of people. Here are numerous true examples of people who experience real changes in health, well-being, and spiritual transformation. Sometimes we believe pain is necessary to heal. We often don't have the faith to believe miracles can happen in the blink of an eye. This book will help heal that illusion in an easy, comprehensive way. Whether you believe in science or faith, in truth theidea that they are separate is only a perception.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the "green" benefits of rail travel, Canada has lost much of its railway heritage. Across the country stations have been bulldozed and rails ripped up. Once the heart of communities large and small, stations and tracks have left little more than a gaping hole in Canada’s landscapes. This book revisits the times when railways were the country’s economic lifeline, and the station the social centre. Here was where we worked, played, listened to political speeches, or simply said goodbye to loved ones never knowing when they would return. The landscapes which grew around the station are also explored and include such forgotten features as station hotels, restaurants, gardens and the once common railway YMCA. Railway companies often hired the world’s leading architects to design grand station buildings which ranged in style from chateau-esque to art deco. Even small town stations and wayside shelters displayed an artistic flare and elegance. Although most have vanished, the book celebrates the survival of that heritage in stations which have been saved or indeed remain in use. The book will appeal to anyone who has links with our rail era, or who simply appreciates the value of Canada’s built heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graham Hutchins fell in love with trains at an early age. As a youngster growing up in the railway town of Te Kuiti, he would gaze on the steaming monsters as they thundered through the King Country. Before long, train travel became more than a pastime, more than a fascination: he was hooked. As he recounts in this book, he was just ten years old when he undertook a journey alone on the night train to Auckland. From then on he travelled as much as he could, and later as a young man searched out the smaller forgotten lines to experience what they had to offer. Stop the Train! I want to get on describes his experiences travelling throughout New Zealand on regular passenger trains, railcars, goods trains and work trains. The routes he traverses include the Central Otago line, the Gisborne Railcar, the Southerner to Invercargill, a mixed train through rural Taranaki, a workers’ train from Greymouth on the Rewanui Incline, the Endeavour to Hawke’s Bay, the Silver Fern Railcar and more. Many services have now been axed, but he vividly recalls their delights, from the scenery outside to the often primitive conditions inside and the people he encounters along the way. He also tells many engaging tales about the history of the lines and what makes each so distinctive. Sometimes alone, on other occasions with his wife Jenny or his mate Russell, he conveys the unique experience and sheer pleasure of rail travel in every corner of New Zealand, from the 1950s to the present day. ‘Some people take to the bottle, others go shopping. I jump on a train, if I can find one, and wait for the swish and sway to take me away. Away from the down times. For me the diversion comes as much from the rhythm as the passing landscapes from the train window.’ Graham Hutchins remembers the incredibly varied journeys he has taken by train throughout New Zealand. They have given him a lifetime of pleasure.
