Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book tells the story of the day Santa Claus felt obliged to take a special trip after Christmas to fulfill the request made by a poor child. After a short holiday after Christmas, Santa Claus began preparations for toy production for the upcoming Christmas. He was aided by the elves and they all work in the secret village of Santa Claus in Lapland, Finland. Seeing the mail in the inbox, Santa Claus was surprised to find a letter that had been hidden at the bottom of the box. It was a request from a poor child. As a gift he asked for a bicycle, notebooks and pencils to study. He lived in a small house in the backcountry, far from school and could not attend classes like the other children. Santa Claus has agreed to pay a special visit to the poor boy, even though it is not Christmas, causing a stir and many surprises among the children and adults who have seen his sleigh with the reindeer pass like a comet in the sky bound for the poor boy s house. Completed his mission, Santa Claus returns to his home for his well-deserved vacation. The boy was able to start his studies in time thanks to the new off-season gifts from Santa Claus.

Download or read book Letters to Santa Claus written by The Elves and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “poignant” collection of real letters sent to Santa Claus—a town in Indiana—from the 1930s to the twenty-first century, from both children and adults (The New York Times). For countless Christmases, children—and sometimes adults—have stuffed their dreams, wishes, and promises into envelopes. Over many decades, millions of these letters have poured into Santa Claus, Indiana. Arriving from all corners of the globe, the letters ask for toys, family reunions, snow, and help for the needy—sometimes the needy being the writers themselves. They are candid, heartfelt, and often blunt. Many children wonder how Santa gets into their chimneyless homes. One child reminds Santa that she has not hit her brothers over 1,350 times that year, and another respectfully requests two million dollars in “cold cash.” One child hopes to make his life better with a time machine, an adult woman asks for a man, and one miscreant actually threatens Santa’s reindeer! Containing more than 250 actual letters and envelopes from the naughty and nice reaching back to the 1930s, this moving book will touch hearts and bring back memories of a time in our lives when the man with a white beard and a red suit held out the hope that our wishes might come true. “Often very affecting . . . also offers an unusual window into American history.” —Library Journal “The letters . . . are alternately silly and somber, hilarious and heartfelt.” —The Weekly Standard

Download or read book New York City written by Andrew F. Smith and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City’s first food biography showcases all the vibrancy, innovation, diversity, influence, and taste of this most-celebrated American metropolis. Its cuisine has developed as a lively potluck supper, where discrete culinary traditions have survived, thrived, and interacted. For almost 400 years New York’s culinary influence has been felt in other cities and communities worldwide. New York’s restaurants, such as Delmonico’s, created and sustained haute cuisine in this country. Grocery stores and supermarkets that were launched here became models for national food distribution. More cookbooks have been published in New York than in all other American cities combined. Foreign and “fancy” foods, including hamburgers, pizza, hot dogs, Waldorf salad, and baked Alaska, were introduced to Americans through New York’s colorful street vendors, cooks, and restaurateurs. As Smith shows here, the city’s ever-changing culinary life continues to fascinate and satiate both natives and visitors alike.
