Book excerpt: Trying to prepare a holiday children's program is often a stressful affair for both the youngsters, who worry about memorizing their lines, and for their directors, who tear their hair out trying to make sure everyone attends rehearsals, not to mention coordinating props and costumes. Mel Ann Coley has devised a way to lower the stress for everyone involved while still providing a meaningful experience. Her solution is in the form of a story told by a narrator, with children "acting out" their parts. This frees children from memorizing lines, makes the program very adaptable (it's easy to add or delete characters), and allows for many ages to participate. It's perfect for churches looking for a fun, easy-to-do resource that requires a minimum of rehearsals and few props! Mel Ann Coley has developed a Christmas program format that works for these hectic times. A 1,500-member church in Dallas has used her programs most successfully for several years. Plus she delivers an entertaining yet valuable message for the Christmas season. Diane England, Ph.D. Children's Church and Youth Education Director Unity Church of Dallas, Texas Mel Ann Coley is a magna cum laude graduate of North Texas State University with a B.S. degree in Secondary Education (Speech and English). She currently teaches writing part-time at Richland College and is a freelance writer and editor. She is also the proud mother of two children.

Book excerpt: 'Challenging and disturbing, The Melting is an incredibly cruel fable about friendship and adolescence . . . Spit knows no fear. It is we, the readers, that are left trembling.' - Leïla Slimani, author of Lullaby Eva can trace the route to Pim’s farm with her eyes closed, even though she has not been to Bovenmeer for many years. There she grew up among the rape fields and dairy farms. There lies also the root of all their grief. Eva was one of three children born in her small Flemish town in 1988. Growing up alongside the boys Laurens and Pim, Eva sought refuge from her loveless family life in the company of her two friends. But with adolescence came a growing awareness of their burgeoning sexuality. Driven by their newly found desires, the children begin a game that will have serious and violent consequences for them all. Thirteen years after the summer she’s tried for so long to forget, Eva is returning to her village. Everything fell apart that summer, but this time she’ll be prepared. She has a large block of ice in her car boot and she’s ready to settle the score . . . Part thriller, part coming-of-age novel, The Melting is an extraordinary and unsettling debut from Lize Spit, a reckoning with adolescent cruelty and the scars it leaves.

Book excerpt: “The Melting Pot” is a play by Israel Zangwill. First performed in 1908, it tells the story of the Quixanos, a Russian Jewish immigrant family. In an attempt to forget the horrors of his time spent in a pogrom that killed his sister and mother, David Quixanos writes an "American Symphony" that harks forward to a fairer and safer society devoid of ethnic divisions. After falling in love with a Russian Christian immigrant named Vera, David is forced to confront the man responsible for his family's treatment in the pogrom: Vera's Father. Israel Zangwill (1864–1926) was a British author. He was a leading figure in cultural Zionism during the 19th century, as well as close friend of Theodor Herzl. In later life, he renounced the seeking of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Other notable works by this author include: “Dreamers of the Ghetto” (1898), “Ghetto Tragedies” (1899), and “Ghetto Comedies” (1907). This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with an introductory chapter from “English Humourists of To-Day” by J. A. Hammerton.

Book excerpt: Brimming with attitude and broken beyond repair, Isaac "Ice" Wolfe has a heart as cold as his nickname, and he likes it that way--until he meets his neighbor Avery Maxwell. Avery is unlike any woman he's ever known. Her smile thaws his frozen heart. Being with her heals his broken places. She makes him feel, and for Isaac that's not always a good thing. Isaac has burned every bridge in his professional hockey career. When he's traded to the Seattle Sockeyes halfway through their inaugural season, he knows he won't get another chance. He's never been a team player, yet he needs to become one--and fast. Avery has only wanted one thing in her life--to train and show horses. Her decision to drop out of college to pursue her riding career causes a rift with her big sister, but Avery is tired of following everyone else's dreams. Now she's following her own, and no one is going to distract her from her passion--until she meets a dark stranger and his cantankerous dog. When Isaac is warned away from Avery by the team's captain, who happens to be Avery's future brother-in-law, Isaac sees the writing on the wall. It's Avery or his career. To Isaac, a life without hockey wouldn't be a life worth living. But what about a life without Avery? Do Isaac and Avery sacrifice their mutual passion for each other in order to achieve their goals, or do they fight to have it all, even if by doing so, they might lose everything in the end? ** USA Today Bestselling author Jami Davenport presents another Seattle Sockeyes hockey romance and the fifth book in her Game On in Seattle sports romance series showcasing alpha male heroes of football, baseball, and hockey.
