Book Synopsis The Dawn of the Pacific Century by : William J. McCord
Download or read book The Dawn of the Pacific Century written by William J. McCord and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author [displays] a commanding knowledge of a broad range of literature in the social sciences and a sound critique of existing theories of development... makes the case for a genuinely Asian model of development that must be understood on its own terms."--Foreign Affairs Analysts have been confounded in attempts to explain Asian development, without resources and colonies, without internal violence, and broadly distributing wealth as they have grown. Existing theories of development offer little guidance. Even explanations that look to the special circumstances of Asian countries have their weaknesses. McCord considers some of these ideas, so as to draw from them common themes. He identifies a common group of socioeconomic values and policies shared by most of these nations, and these, he shows, tell us much.
Download or read book The White Pacific written by Gerald Horne and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-05-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide supplies of sugar and cotton were impacted dramatically as the U.S. Civil War dragged on. New areas of production entered these lucrative markets, particularly in the South Pacific, and plantation agriculture grew substantially in disparate areas such as Australia, Fiji, and Hawaii. The increase in production required an increase in labor; in the rush to fill the vacuum, freebooters and other unsavory characters began a slave trade in Melanesians and Polynesians that continued into the twentieth century. The White Pacific ranges over the broad expanse of Oceania to reconstruct the history of "blackbirding" (slave trading) in the region. It examines the role of U.S. citizens (many of them ex-slaveholders and ex-confederates) in the trade and its roots in Civil War dislocations. What unfolds is a dramatic tale of unfree labor, conflicts between formal and informal empire, white supremacy, threats to sovereignty in Hawaii, the origins of a White Australian policy, and the rise of Japan as a Pacific power and putative protector. It also pieces together a wonderfully suggestive history of the African American presence in the Pacific. Based on deft archival research in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, the United States, and Great Britain, The White Pacific uncovers a heretofore hidden story of race, labor, war, and intrigue that contributes significantly to the emerging intersectional histories of race and ethnicity.

The fire that almost ended Eden’s life has put an end to the promise of marriage. While saving Eden, Rafe lost not only his eyesight, but also his independence, his determination, and his pride. In a short letter, he ends Eden’s hope for happiness. Hurt and angry, Eden sails to the leper colony on the island of Molokai, where her mother is suffering. During Eden’s year-long absence, Rafe seeks medical care in San Francisco and eventually regains his sight. Returning to his coffee plantation on the Big Island, Rafe finds the beautiful Bernice Judson waiting. This is the year of decision. Hawaii is on the brink of revolution. The anti-Royalists threaten to depose the Hawaiian queen and bring the Hawaiian Islands under the Stars and Stripes. Eden must choose a side in politics and where to put her trust. Will Eden discover the painful lesson God wants her to learn? And will she ever find healing for her broken heart, with or without a life that includes Rafe?
Book Synopsis India as an Asia Pacific Power by : David Brewster
Download or read book India as an Asia Pacific Power written by David Brewster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of India as a regional and potentially global power is forcing us to rethink our mental map of the Asia Pacific. We are only just beginning to discern how India may alter the global economic landscape. How will the rise of India change the strategic landscape of Asia and beyond? This book provides a comprehensive assessment of India's international relations in the Asia Pacific, a region which has not traditionally been understood to include India. It examines India’s strategic thinking about the Asia Pacific, its relationships with China and the United States, and India's increasingly close security ties with other major countries in the region. It considers the consequences of India’s rise on the Asia Pacific strategic order and asks whether India is likely to join the ranks of the major powers of the Asia Pacific in coming years.
