Book Synopsis The Dawning of Gauge Theory by : Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh
Download or read book The Dawning of Gauge Theory written by Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the course of this century, gauge invariance has slowly emerged from being an incidental symmetry of electromagnetism to being a fundamental geometrical principle underlying the four known fundamental physical interactions. The development has been in two stages. In the first stage (1916-1956) the geometrical significance of gauge-invariance gradually came to be appreciated and the original abelian gauge-invariance of electromagnetism was generalized to non-abelian gauge invariance. In the second stage (1960-1975) it was found that, contrary to first appearances, the non-abelian gauge-theories provided exactly the framework that was needed to describe the nuclear interactions (both weak and strong) and thus provided a universal framework for describing all known fundamental interactions. In this work, Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh describes the former phase. O'Raifeartaigh first illustrates how gravitational theory and quantum mechanics played crucial roles in the reassessment of gauge theory as a geometric principle and as a framework for describing both electromagnetism and gravitation. He then describes how the abelian electromagnetic gauge-theory was generalized to its present non-abelian form. The development is illustrated by including a selection of relevant articles, many of them appearing here for the first time in English, notably by Weyl, Schrodinger, Klein, and London in the pre-war years, and by Pauli, Shaw, Yang-Mills, and Utiyama after the war. The articles illustrate that the reassessment of gauge-theory, due in a large measure to Weyl, constituted a major philosophical as well as technical advance.

Download or read book The Evening Twilight and the Glorious Dawning (Classic Reprint) written by Thomas Applegate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evening Twilight and the Glorious Dawning We feel particular pleasure in placing before the public a fourth volume of the writings of the late Rev. Thomas Applegate. This work complets a set of valuable literature; and we feel confident that in the present form they will be of increased profit to the reader, and will receive the same attention which the former volumes have attracted. The first part of this volume is designed to illustrate the time in the Christian's life, when he is standing on the brink of the river of death, soon to be borne to the opposite shore. The latter part treats of the glimpses of the new Jerusalem, which have been given us in the "Revelation of St. John, the divine." As the former part illustrates the evening of our mortal existence, so the latter looks upon the dawning (which is indeed glorious) of the entrance into life eternal. The chapters of this work will be found very interesting and instructive to the devout reader. With these few words we leave the work in his hands for perusal. He has, however, used freely two books dealing with land boom days. These are T. S. Van Dyke's Millionaires of a Day; and T. R. Sanford's The Bursting of a Boom. From Van Dyke's really classic description the psychological sequence has been followed very closely; and from the Sanford book some of the auctioneer "patter" has been lifted bodily. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A City of the Dawn IT is something more than a pleasure to me to be asked to say a few words of introduction to this brilliant little book, the work of a friend and former pupil. Brilliant is the Word that keeps recurring to me, because the author appears to me to have actually seen things wonderful and strange, to have caught and retained, out of a thousand rich impres sions, whatever it is which constitutes their interest and charm, their strangeness and grotesqueness, their appeal and pathos, their strength and fineness; and all this, it seems to me, ripples into words both apt and beau tiful, till I too see and feel it, swiftly and distinctly - the heat, the colour, the scent, the atmosphere of it all. The book is Vivid, picturesque, impressive from end to end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Download or read book The Life of Thomas Dixon written by Samuel Crothers Logan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Thomas Dixon: A Memorial It is perhaps impossible for one generation fully to apprehend the life, or appreciate the experiences, of the generation which precedes it. It is chiefly the issues of an active life, with its accomplished facts which touch other lives in this world, which may be expected to make lasting impressions on succeed ing generations. A man's contemporaries are the most capable and appreciative judges Of his personal Character; while an after-generation may perhaps be the better judge of his acts, or of the wisdom of his plans. IT IS the memory OF the man, not the register of his deeds, which is the more precious to his friends. The deeds are to them specially valu able only in so far as they perpetuate the picture of the man himself. It is the husband, the father, and friend, who should be embalmed in the deserted household and circle of affection. His works and activities will be measured by them, and become especially precious only in SO far as they bring the man himself back in his earnest and active life to their hearts. It is, indeed, one of the saddest thoughts of our lives here, that we not only pass away from visible and conscious contact with the world, which is so much to us, but that the very remembrance of us fades away from the world's vision, as the morning cloud before the dawning Of the day. The remembrance of many Of our acts and plans of life may remain in the world after we leave it, especially if their results continue to affect other lives. Dim and imperfect shadows of ourselves, in conspicuous positions, may now and then flash across the path of other seekers Of position; we shall probably be lost to sight, even before the foot-prints we have made, in crossing the stage of action, have become untraceable. Yet it is we ourselves who desire to Hire in the hearts of all to whom we have tried to be helpful and true. It is what we are, or have tried to be, with all our mis takes and blunders, our imperfections and weak nesses, that we desire Should remain in the memory and heart of those we leave behind us.
