Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of the Catholic Revival in England, Vol. 1 of 2: 1781-1803 But the period of nearly a quarter Of a century dealt with in the present volumes may be considered the most important of all, for it was during this time that it may fairly be said that the tide turned; when the gradual shrinkage of the Catholic body which had been proceed ing steadily for over two centuries ceased, and a future began to open out before the Catholics Of England in a manner to which their forefathers had been strangers. This period may therefore be appropriately called the Dawn of that Catholic Revival which has been proceed ing ever since. The number and variety of influences at work, the abolition of the Penal Laws, the influx of the French Refugee Clergy, the return of our Colleges and Convents to English soil, and other influences as well, combine to fill it with instructive historical lessons. It has been endeavoured to present a history of the Eng lish Catholic body in general, together with a detailed account of their development in London and the home counties, - the old London District, as it was called. For obvious reasons no attempt has been made to de scribe the Catholic missions throughout the country. In many cases this has been done by books published locally by the priests of the missions they concern: in at least one instance a whole county has been covered in a single book. The work of the Catholic Record Society has in many cases rendered valuable assistance towards research of this kind, and it is much to be hoped that histories of other missions or districts may continue to be written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of the Catholic Revival in England, Vol. 2 of 2: 1781-1803 Among the bishops whose sees were suppressed was one who was destined to take a leading part in connection with the reception of the exiled clergy in England - Monseigneur de la Marche, Bishop of St. Pol de Leon, a small town in Brittany near St. Malo. He was among the first to leave France, and is called by Plasse1 the Precursor. A short account of his history and antecedents will be our best introduction to his remarkable personality. Count Jean Francois de la Marche was born at Quimper, in Brittany, in 1729. When a youth he was destined by his parents for a military career, and he fought in the War of the Austrian Succession. Being wounded in the battle of Piacenza, like another St. Ignatius, he forthwith determined to resign his commission, and devote himself to the service of the Church. He was ordained priest in 1 7 56, and became Bishop of St. Pol de Leon in 1 772, SO that he had already occupied that position nearly twenty years when in consequence of a dispute with the civil power he found himself obliged to take refuge by secret flight. Book excerpt: This volume advances scholarly understanding of English Catholicism in the early modern period through a series of interlocking essays on single family: the Throckmortons of Coughton Court, Warwickshire, whose experience over several centuries encapsulates key themes in the history of the Catholic gentry. Despite their persistent adherence to Catholicism, in no sense did the Throckmortons inhabit a 'recusant bubble'. Family members regularly played leading roles on the national political stage, from Sir George Throckmorton's resistance to the break with Rome in the 1530s, to Sir Robert George Throckmorton's election as the first English Catholic MP in 1831. Taking a long-term approach, the volume charts the strategies employed by various members of the family to allow them to remain politically active and socially influential within a solidly Protestant nation. In so doing, it contributes to ongoing attempts to integrate the study of Catholicism into the mainstream of English social and political history, transcending its traditional status as a 'special interest' category, remote from or subordinate to the central narratives of historical change. It will be particularly welcomed by historians of the sixteenth through to the nineteenth century, who increasingly recognise the importance of both Catholicism and anti-Catholicism as central themes in English cultural and political life.
