Book excerpt: In its conventional meaning, masquerade refers to a festive gathering of people wearing masks and elegant costumes. But traditional forms of masquerade have evolved over the past century to include the representation of alternate identities in the media and venues of popular culture, including television, film, the internet, theater, museums, sports arenas, popular magazines and a range of community celebrations, reenactments and conventions. This collection of fresh essays examines the art and function of masquerade from a broad range of perspectives. From African slave masquerade in New World iconography, to the familiar Guy Fawkes masks of the Occupy Wall Street movement, to the branded identities created by celebrities like Madonna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga, the essays show how masquerade permeates modern life.

Book Synopsis Masquerades in African Society by : Walter E. A. Van Beek
Download or read book Masquerades in African Society written by Walter E. A. Van Beek and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the dynamics of African masquerades and mask performances on the continent, linking performative expressions to societal characteristics. What is the meaning of masks and masquerades in African traditions and how can we understand their role in rituals and performances? Why do we find masks in some African regions and not in others, and what does this 'mask habitat' say about the general dynamics of masquerades in Africa? Though masks are among the most famous art icons of Africa, exploration of their uses and the way in which they articulate social characteristics of African societies has been underexamined. This book takes an anthropological perspective on the phenomenon of masquerades on the African continent to show how mask rituals are an integral part of African indigenous religions and societies, and are informed by and linked to specific types of social and ecological conditions. Having established the commonalities of mask rituals and a mask typology, the authors look at the varieties of mask performances and the types of rituals in which masks function in rites of passage and in rituals of gender, power, and identity. The following chapters focus on different types of rituals featuring masks, from initiation and death ceremonies to secrecy, kingship, law and war. With its broad examination of the use of masks on the continent, from Angola to Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DRC, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, this well illustrated book will stand as an authoritative study of the use of masks, of interest not only to those in African Studies but to anthropologists and ethnographers worldwide.
Book Synopsis Dan Ge Performance by : Daniel B. Reed
Download or read book Dan Ge Performance written by Daniel B. Reed and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-08-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ge, formerly translated as "mask" or "masquerade," appears among the Dan people of Côte d'Ivoire as a dancing and musical embodiment of their social ideals and religious beliefs. In Dan Ge Performance, Daniel B. Reed sets out to discover what resides at the core of Ge. He finds that Ge is defined as part of a religious system, a form of entertainment, an industry, a political tool, an instrument of justice, and a form of resistance—and it can take on multiple roles simultaneously. He sees genu (pl.) dancing the latest dance steps, co-opting popular music, and acting in concert with Ivorian authorities to combat sorcery. Not only are the bounds of traditional performance stretched, but Ge performance becomes a strategy for helping the Dan to establish individual and community identity in a world that is becoming more religiously and ethnically diverse. Readers interested in all aspects of expressive culture in West Africa will find fascinating material in this rich and penetrating book.

Book excerpt: A male child Udoka, born to a family of five daughters and one son is raised by his single mother after the boy’s father dies prematurely in a rural third world community. The boy drops out of school at a very early age and joins the company of village loafers called “ofekes” and “ofo-ogolis.” These specialize in hanging around where there are wedding ceremonies, burial, and chieftaincy installation ceremonies, venues where there will be free food and free drinks. During one of such ceremonies in which Mr. Odike his cousin is taking a second wife, the uneducated Udoka sees, and falls in love with Chioma who is educated and who hails from a completely different social background being a catechist’s daughter. Udoka gets rebuffed. Twist of fate again brings both young people together and through encouragement from Chioma, Udoka goes to school, progresses, and ultimately marries Chioma. Further twist of fate sees the couple move over to Atlanta in America where Chioma trains for, and becomes a registered nurse and starts earning well. Her new situation positions Chioma into seeing Dr. Gerald an attending consultant in the hospital where she works. Chioma falls in love with the rich medical doctor and without provocation, divorces her beleaguered husband who, laden with the burden of debts and child support, flees from Atlanta back to his Akunwanta native land. Chioma gets disappointed by Dr. Gerald after she aborts a baby she was expecting for him. The polygamous nature of the common Akunwanta origin of the divorced former couple holds out the only opportunity whereby Chioma can find a place as a second wife to a now prosperous and polygamous Udoka. The monogamy by law policy in Atlanta as opposed to the accepted polygamy by culture in Akunwanta plays out favorably for both parties as it becomes possible for Udoka to remain monogamous in Atlanta but polygamous in Akunwanta. One man’s apparent poison plays out as another man’s delicious meat. Will the one learn from the other?
Book Synopsis The Modernist Masquerade by : Colleen McQuillen
Download or read book The Modernist Masquerade written by Colleen McQuillen and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masked and costume balls thrived in Russia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries during a period of rich literary and theatrical experimentation. The first study of its kind, The Modernist Masquerade examines the cultural history of masquerades in Russia and their representations in influential literary works. The masquerade's widespread appearance as a literary motif in works by such writers as Anna Akhmatova, Leonid Andreev, Andrei Bely, Aleksandr Blok, and Fyodor Sologub mirrored its popularity as a leisure-time activity and illuminated its integral role in the Russian modernist creative consciousness. Colleen McQuillen charts how the political, cultural, and personal significance of lavish costumes and other forms of self-stylizing evolved in Russia over time. She shows how their representations in literature engaged in dialog with the diverse aesthetic trends of Decadence, Symbolism, and Futurism and with the era's artistic philosophies.
