Dr. Alford articulates his ideas of Christian philosophy and practice for both the believer and the non-believer, in ways professional and personal. It is not simply a collection of insightful and inspiring sermons, essays, articles and other theological musings. It is, more importantly, a window into the heart and soul of a very special person.? ?If you are looking for thoughtful and insightful theological reflections, you have come to the right place. If you are in search of penetrating and astute church commentary, you have come to the right place. If you need inspirational and encouraging spiritual meditations, you have come to the right place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life, as we all, you and old know, is not fair. So what do we do about it? Do we let it defeat us while we are in the most vulnerable state, suffering what seems to be immense pain that we cannot endure? Or do we take a personal journey through our own reality and face the ultimate knowledge? We are not alone; there is a loving God who cares for us. Dance is a book offering answers by a wise woman who has traveled not only continent to continent (and writes in her fourth language after Armenian, Turkish, and French) but from abject hopelessness to survival and success through her faith, her self-reliance, and her devotion to Christianity, her religion, but not one to which she limits her insights. She tells us how she survived through her own rough-honed spirituality, her never-ending search for confidence, and the path that provided her for achievement and success. -I. B. Wells, author of Women of Summer Alis Cerrahyan has written a humble yet powerful memoir. It beautifully portrays the true power of forgiveness and allows us to share in a journey of faith and determination unaltered by circumstances. The truth is a powerful healer. -Sheila Kilpatrick, author of Anastasia's Rain

Sandra Glahn thinks that we have misunderstood Paul and the context to which he wrote. Combining spiritual autobiography with new research on the Greek goddess Artemis, Glahn lays a biblical foundation for God's view of women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folklorist Robert L. Stone presents a rare collection of high-quality documentary photos of the sacred steel guitar musical tradition and the community that supports it. The introductory text and extended photo captions in Can’t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus! Photographs from the Sacred Steel Community offer the reader an intimate view of this unique tradition of passionately played music that is beloved among fans of American roots music and admired by folklorists, ethnomusicologists, and other scholars. In 1992, a friend in Hollywood, Florida, introduced Stone to African American musicians who played the electric steel guitar in the African American Holiness-Pentecostal churches House of God and Church of the Living God. With the passion, skill, and unique voice they brought to the instruments, these musicians profoundly impressed Stone. He produced an album for the Florida Folklife Program, which Arhoolie Records licensed and released worldwide. It created a roots music sensation. In 1996, Stone began to document the tradition beyond Florida. He took the photos in this book from 1992 to 2008 in Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Florida, and at concerts in Italy. The images capture musicians as they play for worship services before spirit-filled believers singing, dancing, shouting, praying, and testifying. Stone gives the viewer much to witness, always presenting his passionate subjects with dignity. His sensitive portrayal of this community attests to the ongoing importance of musical traditions in African American life and worship.

Book excerpt: There is nothing as precious in life as a friend who knows you and loves you in spite of yourself. Yet over the last couple of decades, we’ve substituted the joy of real friendship with cheap imitations. We settle for “community” on Facebook and Twitter and a series of text messages that allow us to communicate with someone without the commitment. We like each other’s beautifully filtered photos on Instagram and delude ourselves into believing we have a community. But real friendship requires effort. It’s showing up, laughing loud, and crying hard. It’s forgiving and loving and giving the benefit of the doubt. It’s making a casserole, doing a carpool pickup, and making sure she knows those cute shoes are 50 percent off. Written in the same comedic style as the New York Times bestsellers Sparkly Green Earrings and The Antelope in the Living Room, Nobody’s Cuter than You is a laugh-out-loud look at the special bond that exists between friends and a poignant celebration of all the extraordinary people God had the good sense to bring into our lives at exactly the right moments. From the friendships we develop over a lifetime to the ones that wounded us and the ones that taught us to love better, Melanie Shankle reveals the influence our friends have on who we were, who we are, and who we will become. And on a day when our jeans feel too tight, our chins have decided to embrace hormone-related acne reminiscent of our teen years, and our kids have tested the limits of our sanity, they are the ones who will look at us and say, “Nobody’s cuter than you!”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nobody's Home is a bold view of the American novel from its beginnings to the contemporary scene. Focusing on some of the deepest instincts of American life and culture--individual liberty, freedom of speech, constructing a life--Arnold Weinstein brilliantly sketches the remarkable career of the American self in some of the major works of the past one hundred fifty years. Weinstein contends that American writers are haunted by the twin specters of the self as a mirage, as Nobody, and by the brutal forces of culture and ideology that deny selfhood to people on the basis of money, sex, and color of skin. His central thesis is that language makes possible freedoms and accomplishments that are achievable in no other realm, and that American fiction is a fascinating record of the human fight against coercion, of the kinds of maneuvering room that we may find in life and in art. This study is unique in several respects: it offers some of the keenest readings of major American texts that have ever been written, including some of the most significant works of the past decades, and it fashions a rich and supple view of the American novel as a writerly form of freedom, in sharp contrast to today's critical emphasis on blindness and co-option.

Book excerpt: WARNING This book has been written using down-to-earth language and contains many colloquialisms from the north of England; it is intended to entertain and not offend! It is difficult to write a book using words and phrases that will be understood on both sides of the Atlantic. But I did try to meet you half-way and there is a Glossary at the back. If all else fails you can always phone a friend! If you are a prude or feel that you may not be able to understand the content please do not buy this hilarious book. Decisions, decisions! If you have decided to ignore the well-intended warnings, thank you for buying it and enjoy! Please take it to the cashier and pay for it if you are reading it in a bookstore; the worst that can happen is you will learn how not to write a book - at a bargain price! But if you decide not to buy it, I can only say - you don't know what you are missing! It all began On 3rd September 1939 war was solemnly declared between Germany and England followed shortly after by a somewhat different declaration between my parents. As a result of these two actions I was born, in Bolton Lancashire 8th July 1940 into a world of turmoil, noise and frequent blackouts. I didn't realize at that time, I was too busy learning how to pee and poo, that the worst had yet to come - toffee rationing; it was hard growing up exchanging worthless clothes coupons for the more important Dolly Mixtures etc. However, in contrast to the nappy, there was a silver lining to this introduction to life; it taught me the art of bartering, which has been of great help to this date. Having set the main themes of this book, weird sense of humour and the art of creative bargaining, I will attempt to recall enough details of my somewhat different life, and the odd joke, to keep your interest. At worst you will throw it away or throw up! My father Bob was a coach painter and mother Phyllis a cotton weaver. I say this to let you know from the start that I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth; my upbringing was based on love and morality for which I am so grateful.

Book excerpt: LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD AND THE STORY PRIZE Named a BEST BOOK OF 2022 by Oprah Daily, Vogue, Kirkus Reviews, Library Journal, and Electric Lit From a prizewinning author comes an “electric...stunning” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) debut story collection about women navigating the wilds of male-dominated Alaskan society. Set in Newman’s home state of Alaska, Nobody Gets Out Alive is an exhilarating collection about women struggling to survive not just grizzly bears and charging moose, but the raw legacy of their marriages and families. Alongside stories set in today’s Last Frontier—rife with suburban sprawl, global warming, and opioid addiction—Newman delves into remote wilderness of the 1970s and 80s, bringing to life young girls and single moms in search of a wilder, freer, more adventurous America. The final story takes place in a railroad camp in 1915, where an outspoken heiress stages an elaborate theatrical production in order to seduce the wife of her husband’s employer. “Rich with wit and wisdom, showing us that love, marriage, and family are always a bigger and more perilous adventures than backcountry trips” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), these keenly observed stories prove there are some questions—about love, heartbreak, and the meaning of home—that can’t be outrun, no matter how hard we try. Nobody Gets Out Alive is a dazzling foil to the adventure narratives of old.

Book excerpt: If you are reading this some time in the future, my hope would be that this book will give you a small insight into life in Britain in the last half of the twentieth century. I was born in 1950 and this is the story of my adventures over the following 60 years. This is a nobody in particular's account of a 1950s childhood, the so-called Swinging Sixties, the hippy era, the first and second Glastonbury Festivals, the hippy trail to India, gurus and self-discovery, marriage, being a dad, divorce, marriage again, training horses, organic farming, getting a glimpse of old age, and a few other things along the way. When it comes to how to live your life, I'd say use it for what you enjoy doing, and definitely don't sell it down the river in exchange for a few quid an hour! Actually, add in a bit of love and peace and that's a pretty good description of the hippy philosophy that we have there.
