Download or read book The Dahlia Manual written by W. W. Wilmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dahlia Manual: A Treatise on Dahlia Culture The Dahlia derives its name from the Swedish botanist, Dr. Dahl, but for a time was also known under the name of Georgina, after Prof. George, of St. Petersburg. Its earliest known history is not yet very old. About the year -657 Francisco Hernandez, a Spanish physician, wrote a book on plants, and among the plants de scribed he mentions Dahlia variabilis, the species from which most, if not all, of our pres ent varieties have originated. At that time it is probable that it was only known as one of the great multitude of botanical plants. Without much, if any, thought of its future usefulness, for we find nothing further in print for l3o years. It is quite probable, how ever, that some effort was made to improve and domesticate the plant toward the close of the eighteenth century, for in l787 Nicholas Joseph Thirerry de Menonville, a Frenchman, published an account of the Dahlias he had seen growing in the gardens in Mexico. Two years later, l7 89, seeds were sent from the Botanic Gardens of Mex ico to the Royal Gardens at Madrid, Spain, where it was given its present name. This lot of seedlings was lost two years later, as were several other lots sent to various places. But their stay, though brief, awakened a deep interest in the plant and its possibilities, and further attempts at its cultivation were now made in several European countries and it soon became quite popular. The work bestowed upon it, however, seems to have been more in the nature of a fad rather than intelligent study. Difficulty seems to have been encountered also in knowing how to keep the roots over to the next season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Dahlias (Classic Reprint) by : George Gordon
Download or read book Dahlias (Classic Reprint) written by George Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dahlias With respect to the popularity of the Dahlia, attention may with advantage be directed to the fact that there has always been a remarkable steadiness about the fame of this flower. Its cultivators are, it may be assumed, enthusiastic, but their enthusiasm is of a quiet kind, and not, as in the case of that of some other flowers, bubbling over and giving rise to the feeling that it will soon exhaust itself. In taking a retrospective glance over the hundred and odd years that have elapsed since the Dahlia was introduced from its Mexican home to this country, it becomes evident that, quiet though it may have been, enthusiasm as well as strenuous endeavour must have been forthcoming at an early period in the history of the Dahlia as a cultivated flower. The creation of the varied and beautiful types that are now to be seen in gardens could not well have been efiected with out something more than the carrying out, in a more or less mechanical manner, of the technical details essential to success. That something must have been enthusiasm, for without it there could not have been that constancy of pur pose, extending over a comparatively long period, which is an example to all who are engaged in plant improvement. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walker's Up-to-Date Dahlias, 1924 I desire to call particular attention to the Dahlias listed under heading, Leading Novelty Dahlias Page 2. These have proven, both in the amateur garden and with the professional grower, to be satisfactory in every respect. I do not make flower exhibits at the Fall Dahlia Exhibitions or force my plants to get flowers that are far above the average size that we see at such exhibitions. My plants are grown as nature grows them. Bulbs selected from such stock should give far better results. I guarantee all tubers to be true to name and to arrive in perfect condition. But to guarantee the life of a plant, while under cultivation, in the hands of another person is to make a dealer responsible for the errors and inexperience of others, not to men tion freaks of weather, and unfavorable seasons, cut worms, improper planting, unfavorable loca tions and many others, which the dealer has no control over. It is therefore unreasonable to ask dealers to be responsible for the life of the plant throughout the season.
