In summer-time he fared comparatively well, but in winter the ill-heated houses of the colonists gave to him a most chilling and benumbing welcome. Within the great open fireplace, when fairly scorched in the face by the glowing flames of the roaring wood fire, he might be bathed and dressed, and he might be cuddled and nursed in warmth and comfort; but all his baby hours could not be spent in the ingleside, and were he carried four feet away from the chimney on a raw winter's day he found in his new home a temperature that would make a modern infant scream with indignant discomfort, or lie stupefied with cold.

The paper was not printed, because it was thought the subject was of sufficient general interest to warrant its presentation in a book for the use Of the public at large. This volume has therefore no claim to merit except that it contains material which has not before been brought together, relating to an interesting chap ter in the Colonial and early State history of New England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New-England Tale, or Sketches of New England Character and Manners Tm-z writer of this tale has made an humble effort to add something to the scanty stock of native American literature, Any attempt to conciliate favour by apolo gies would be unavailing and absurd. In this free country, no person is under any obligation to write; and the public (un fortunately) is under no obligation to read. It is certainly desirable 'to possess some sketches of the character and manners of our own country, and if this has been done with any degree of success, it would be wrong to doubt that it will find a reception sufficiently favourable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered by Request, Before the Detroit Young Men's Society, Relative to the Customs and Institutions of the Early Colonists of New England I can well remember the event of the first introduction of that sys tem into that which is Ohio now. I think it was about two years be fore Ohio became a state. I was too young then to participate at all in public affairs, or very fully to understand them. But this event I the more distinctly recollect, principally, perhaps, because of the deep interest all the Yankees then in that country exhibited in the matter. The occasion was indeed, considered, and very justly too, as a great triumph. The emigrants from New England constituted at that time, perhaps, a third part of the whole population. These were located principally, at or near the mouth of the Muskingum, and in the Con necticut Western Reserve, with some few who had joined the emigrants from New Jersey, at and near Cincinnati. The central parts of the state, so far as settled at all, were occupied by emigrants from Mary land, Virginia and Kentucky; and the eastern section of it, by citizens principally from the Keystone state. The habits and character of the emigrants from New Jersey, disposed them more to assimilate with the people of New England, and it was principally through their aid, it is believed, that this favorite measure was carried. All others were violently and strongly prejudiced against the policy of it, and sought only to render it ridiculous and hateful.
